Guaranteed doesn't. Get slagged off unfairly, I mean.
No amount of slagging could be unfair to Guaranteed.

Guaranteed wasn't.

Noo.

Noooo.

better I would never have guessed that Phil was
involved with FOREVER NOW because his presence really
wasn't felt.

And we have a new contender for The Most Bizarre
Statement Ever Made On The Digest! For me, Forever Now
is SWAMPED with Phil Gould, and in fact it was the
album that made me realise how much his contribution
to the band was intrinsic to my enjoyment of Level 42.
Furthermore it made me aware of how much I had been
guilty of denigrating the significance of the drummer
to the overall sound of a recording. Although then I
encountered Friesen and the guilt magically
evaporated.

Interesting comments about "Gary vs. Phil", etc.  Personally I always thought it was more of how the song was written and intended to be played (perhaps Mark's preferences?) than purely the drummer's interpretation.

That isn't to say that Gary and Phil are interchangeable -- can you imagine Phil playing some of the tracks on Guaranteed, e.g. Heaven In My Hands?

So, is the drummer staying true to the song, or is the song being played in the drummer's preferred style?  A little of each?  And either way, don't you think Mark's direction would have been very influential?

Answers on a postcard, please...

Interesting discusssion in regards to the current album, and the mike
and phil stuff. I guess the combo of
Mike and Phil might sound more like the orig l42 sound, but in all
honesty i reallyy dont think MK was
trying to make this new album sound like the original band. While i like
some of the Lindup tracks,
they sound more like the Lindup composed tracks from a L42 album,
instead of the tracks credited
to the band. While i will support anything these guys do, i'm would
personally be more excited if
Gary and Mark go some jazzier project off the ground. I guess it would
also have something to with
what we are looking for out of an album from any of these guy. I
honestly didnt listen for it to be
'classic' level 42 or anything. But i was suprised that a few of the
songs sounded like 80's 42
to me.(dive into the sun, rooted) And 'Rooted' sounds like it came from
'One Man'

Now, the Forever Now album...said it before, i'll say it again...i must
be the only person on this
digest who didnt think this album was a return to form. Some good songs,
but as far as Phil's
'drumming' goes..it has nice grooves at maybe 8 bars at a time, as the
whole thing sounds like
drum loops to me, which we what it is. I found it a waste of great
player. Still lyrically at the top
of his game, but i was really disapointed with the drums personally.

Blimey it's like I've never been away. Were there any 'See You In The Bar' incidents at the last 2 tours that I've not been too. Now if I was a REAL fan.................. Excuse both times were cashflow due to impending house move and then lower income post move (which was a known side effect of moving to S.W England and refusing to go back into I.T.) Oh poor me, bigger house, less stress, lower mortgage, near the sea, Dartmoor etc. Left Reading Feb 2006.
Don't know when I last subscribed but it's been a quite a while, doesn't feel like it looking at the posts though :-). Hello all.

Cheers,

Hi All

Just thought I would mention to you all that Australian Rock Legend Billy Thorpe died today In Sydney aged 60. I cannot believe I will not see this great aussie with his powerful voice  and brilliant guitar playing ever again. A sad day for Australian Music.
