What's the connection? I used to be pretty good at the Kevin Baconesque connections between Level 42 and Incognito and Steely Dan, but as with most other digesters, life has moved on and I don't remember them. Steely Dan has used a huge list of session musicians and although most of them are US-based, I don't doubt someone can connect the three bands in less than 3 links each way. But I sure you aren't interested in arcane games involving nameless studio musicians. Basically, all three groups have a very good mix of Jazz sensibilities, chord structures, instrumentation, and rhythmic sensibilities mixed into what would otherwise be Pop or Funk music. For some reason I (and many other digesters) gravitate toward such groups and they tend to come up in discussion. There used to be a lot of discussion on this forum about Go West (didn't Eric host a Go West forum back in the early days?). Over the last 13 years on this little email digest, I've been turned onto great music such as Bela Fleck and the Flecktones / Edgar Meyer, Jamiroquai, Jason Rebello, YellowJackets, The Brand New Heavies, etc. etc. etc. I still listen to some of these groups a lot, others I tried and liked but they don't end up in heavy rotation at home or in the car. The fact is that when I started to receive this email digest, the Internet/web was fairly new and unknown and I was an unmarried undergrad with no job and very few people to argue with over what played on the stereo. Thirteen years later I have to negotiate stereo airtime with a wife and several daughters, not all of whom are Level 42 fans. They all do like Donald Fagen without reservation, and we also all like Salsa (sparingly) and Classical -- the girls have discovered they really like Ravel and Debussy. -- Matt Rice, Postdoctoral Research Fellow National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis UCSB Department of Geography +1 805 893 8652 (phone) Santa Barbara, CA 93106 +1 805 893 3146 (fax) rice @ geog.ucsb.edu http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~rice |
