| Extremely long shot this, but I'm trying to get hold of an mp3 of a track by Sting called Ghost In The Strand. It was on the B side of Englishman In New York, and as far as I can tell has only ever come out on the now highly collectable CD version of that single. If anyone can help, much appreciated. >> From: Andrew Goodwin <thenightfly83 @ yahoo.co.uk> What is going on round here lately? First we have people lauding Abba, the most overrated band in the history of popular music, << Overrated _band_, maybe, but there's a lot more going on in the Abba camp. Those guys (the girls were just there for eye candy and the high notes) pushed studio production forward in a major way with things like multitracking the same vocal part with slightly varying tape speeds, thereby creating a shimmering effect nobody had ever heard before. Brilliant innovators, they were, even if their chosen style is not to some AG's taste. And besides, if there were no Abba, my gay friends' dance-disc libraries would be much smaller. >> Retroglide... And chiefly, Sleep Talking is a fabulous track. << Agreed. Stellar stuff. >> it strikes me as a very loud album. << Yes _extremely_ loud. Annoyingly so. Marky is clearly in the vanguard of the Loudness Wars, which is a horrible tendency of recent years to master music with more and more compression so a given song is subjectively louder than the previous song you heard. The idea is that greater perceived volume has a psychological flattering effect. However, it's so extreme now that even some big boys in the music production business are rebelling against it. There's lots of info about loudness wars on the 'Net. >> From: Doug White <bigdp @ stanford.edu> *Ker-poof* << I can't take it any more. I have to ask. Doug, do you have any idea what the slang meaning of "poof" is? ...Alex... | ||

Hey, I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Retroglide isn't a bad album at all. A nice mix of good songs. "The Way Back Home" is good for my mood, if repetitive. The album is overcompressed and not very dynamic . . . . . . . and "Ship" contains some of the worst lyrics ever commited to music. Gaaaaaaaaa. What's that cheese called that's not real cheese, the stuff they put on nachos at the circus? The powdered stuff in the mac and cheese box? "Ship" is worse. No. In my opinion, "Ship" is the worst song ever recorded in the history of human musical effort. Is that strong enough? ok then, -Tom | ||

| Takes me a week to respond to a post responding to a post. But it's AG, from whom I love to hear. A brokered-time show on radio is the same as a paid program in TV - the whole half-hour or hour is bought by one man or company, instead of a couple of sponsors kicking in the dough for a commercial. A "bed" is music that plays under the announcer/host as he or she is talking, at a level so as not to drown him/her out. And you are not irrelevant at nearly 40. That's about the time one really starts living. You get to learn the difference between insight and just being snarky. Heaven knows I (exactly 39 and a half years old today) have.
