The fun part though? Drinking mass quantities of beer. A bunch of 36 year olds drinking beer in the parking lot of a high school, priceless. Warm-ups were at La Canada High School. Then we tailgated outside the Rose Bowl, downed about 6 Guinesses in about 90 minutes. Good Times! Brian A new home for Mom, no cleanup required. All starts here. | ||

Doug's postings have prompted me to post more than I have in a very long
time. A few comments:
1) The IOW fest was indeed a hoot. Don, Eric, Winman and the
gang meeting up at The Orangery in Hyde Park; meeting Bilal for the first
time by him walking up to me on Union St. in Ryde and saying 'Are you
Lolita?'; being offered Bud by some Brits while on the ferry ride over, thinking
that we wanted American beer; me calling Ria and telling her we were coming and
Mark showing up completely surprising us [I still have that picture with him,
with a VERY WIDE grin on my face]; dancing the night away in Portsmouth.
Brilliant...
2) BNH - if you like Brother Sister, definitely get the first one that is
just called Brand New Heavies. Some killer instrumentals with great horns,
and N'Dea's vocals are simply top notch. Stay This Way is one of the best
songs they have ever done IMO - great vox, catchy hook and chords, and the bass
is always moving.
3) Jazz service for church is far from blasphemy. I attend a church
in Manhattan that has five services total - and three of them are jazz!
Many professional musicians attend my church, and playing for the service is
actually a paid gig, so the music is killer. I have performed numerous
times as a soloist, and actually attended two trips to Asia with musicians from
my church where we performed in the top jazz club in that city - and it was
considered a missions trip.
We had a concert last year entitled The Spirit of John Coltrane that
featured Brian Blade and John Patitucci during which my minister gave a lecture
about Coltrane's relationship with faith. Concert was free, over 900
people showed up, and Patitucci then gave a brief talk himself - he is an elder
[senior lay leader] in a Presbyterian church. Our preludes and
postludes [before and after service] are often songs by Marcus Miller, Miles
Davis, Kenny Garrett, etc. This format is actually quite common in
NYC. My church is a Presbyterian one but I know other denominations do
this as well. If you are ever in NYC I would be happy to take you to a
service to hear the great music.
4) Thanks for the birthday wishes - I can hardly believe I'm going to be 40
on August 22nd! Where did the time go?? I have known many of you
since I was 27, and I don't feel much differently than I did then. Any of
you in the NY area are welcome to join my on my birthday - we are having drinks
at Gin Lane, which is on 14th St. just east of Ninth Ave. We will be there
from 6:00 until late [I am leaving for PR the next day and can drink up!].

Well, I am still grooving on the Retroglide Tour CD on my pod. Add to that a mish mosh of Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Crowded house, Eurythmics, Howard Jones, Kraftwerk,Ministry, The The, The Smiths, of Course Level 42, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Yello, Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Duran Duran, ABC, OMD, Hall & Oates, A-ha, Living In a Box, Madness, Thomas Dolby, Peter Gabriel, Bauhaus & Huey Lewis and The News and that's just one of the many playlists I have going on my pod. I'm blissfully aurally living in the 80's at the moment and there's no sign of coming current anytime soon! Just a Starchild born in space... Chuck Charles D.
