If you aren't interested in reading about how a
personal situation kind of ties in to what happened
with Don, just go ahead and skip to the next post.
Seriously. Skip ahead.

Recently, I had come across a package I had received
from Don back in October of 1998. It contained four of
the Digest 5 Year Anniversary pins I had ordered from
him back then, and even finding out about the pins
(and the Digest they commemorated) was something of a
big deal for me because I literally only had internet
access one night a week at a friend's house. I wrote
to Don, and he got back to me right away with all the
details. A very friendly fellow for certain. When I
received the pins I decided to just keep them in the
package that he had sent them in, and all things
considered I'm glad I did. I just dug it out of the
container it's stored in, and it was strange to see
his name there in the return address field and think
that he's not with us here anymore.

The reason I mention the date is because that was a
time in my life when things were a lot less
complicated. In fact, that was the very last month
before things started to take a very bad turn (that
would ultimately take four years to correct). So much
so in fact that I ended up turning to a fellow
Digester whom I'd been corresponding with for help. By
a strange coincidence, that friendship recently ended
because said person turned out to be a spineless
hypocrite. Speaking religion and acting very "Holier
Than Thou" when everyone was looking, but sneaking off
to a very secret life of adult theaters (on the "down
low", as they say, since he's married), folders and
folders of porn on his computer (so much so that he
had to organize them by hair color and nationality),
and who know what else- when he didn't think anyone
was noticing. The problem arose when he projected all
of that onto me- even though in all the time we knew
each other there was never a single conversation of
that nature between us. Imagine someone you've known
and trusted for a very long time turns out to have a
drug habit, yet that person accuses you of being an
addict who in turn is trying to get them addicted.
That was the level of betrayal.

So here I am now, almost 10 years out and the better
for everything I've experienced, and all of a sudden
there are two people from a particular time in my life
that are gone now in a very short span of time. One
figuratively, one literally. I don't know- it just
strikes me as...significant somehow. Probably only to
myself, but significant nonetheless.

If you've read this far and this somehow made sense to
you, take from it what you will. If it didn't and
you're wondering why I posted it here in the first
place, well, you were told at the beginning of the
post to skip this one by, right? Twice, in fact.

The only thing I can think to add at this point is to
tell anyone (who might be inclined to ask) that I'm
NOT going to reveal the person's identity, so don't
waste your own time writing to ask me who it is. As
with so many other things in life, it's not who did
something, but what the did and how it fits into the
greater context of things. Tragedies like what
happened with Don continually serve to remind of us of that.
