I’ve been using pandora.com for the last month or so,
and I find it a bit of a frustrating beast. It will
have periods of real consistency, tossing forth a
succession of diverse and interesting tracks. But then
on other occasions the same artists and even the same
tracks will come round in a single sitting - it’s like
a DJ with Alzheimer’s. It also seems to have a problem
with cross-pollination between the different radio
stations you set up, as if its mind wanders and it
forgets which one it’s supposed to be concentrating
on. (Yesterday morning I put on the one which is
designed to give me music along the lines of Brand New
Heavies, Chic, James Taylor Quartet and Level 42, and
the first four tracks were by Tom McDermott, Teddy
Wilson, Earl Hines and Ralph Sutton. That’s a pretty
liberal interpretation by any standards.) It would be
nice if I could tell it that I like Eliane Elias for
her glorious soloing and not her dodgy singing,
thereby avoiding Astrud Gilberto et al. And I could
use a “don’t play my anything by this artist ever,
ever again” button for the occasional Bee Gees track
it keeps throwing up. But broadly speaking it’s
certainly enhanced my working life.

The downside is that it’s given me several artists of
whom I’d never heard before (pianist Bob Sutter, big
band The Vanguard Orchestra, singer-pianist Jacqui
Naylor, singer-guitarist Joyce Cooling – and that’s
just in the last few days) who are being added to an
already laughably unrealistic CD wants list.

In my contractually obliged reference to Level 42, I
was listening to the second volume of my personal best
of on the way to work this morning. It revealed that
the cycle ride here lasts precisely the length of
Sandstorm, 43 and Foundation & Empire. Here’s the full
track listing for anyone bored enough to have read
this far:

Heathrow
Children Say
Are You Hearing (What I Hear)
Love In A Peaceful World (Old Skool Mix)
88
Good Man In A Storm
Take A Look
Standing In The Light
43
You Can’t Blame Louis
Sandstorm
Talking In Your Sleep
True Believers
Foundation & Empire

Nothing from RITF or (strangely) Guaranteed, but other
than that a pleasingly diverse bunch I think. A couple
from Forever Now, which seemed at the time like a
dignified valedictory album. Ah well.

Hi there...i think i probably used stickers on my cd's for about a
month, before
I realised a few things. A. they come off pretty easy, and B. they
really unbalance
the discs. So i stopped, and started using those markers, which worked
great.
Currently i'm using a CASIO thermal printer, which works wonders for test,
and simple graphics. Its cheap, and the discs look really great.

Its interesting that so many people still use those stickers, when cd
and dvd
makers tell you to NOT put any labels on the discs themselves. I think i
found
some media websites that inform you of this, and yet the same company
markets
a system for labels. Go figure.

I thought abougt it, and figured that while the discs might look cool
with nice
stickers, i'm only looking at the artwork when i'm transferring said
discs from
jewel case, to cd player. Not worth that 3 second time frame. haha

Hi all,

I've scanned two fan magazines from 1988 and 1990 respectively. They can be found at www.level42dk.dk
Hope you enjoy them.

OK, well, there may have been one track from Running
In The Family. Look, if Mark King can't remember which
albums his songs come from why should I?

For those who are interested in Donald Fagen:

As the date indicates it's presumably old hat to those
in the know, but I only found out today. Anyone who
can get me an advance copy can command me at their
whim for the foreseeable future.

Hi ya folks,

This email comes out of reading I've been doing, but nothing specific.

There have been references to a group call Stargirl (?) who opened for Mark
on the One Man Tour, I think. Is it possible to buy their music? What can
their sound be compared to, in other words what group or person sounds
similar? I tried Googling them, but got no coherent hits.

Da Lata, which IS being referenced in recent (to me) digests sounds like an
interesting group, I haven't looked them up yet, but can CDs of theirs be
had? I love Brazilian music...I fondly remember Brazil '66 from when I was
a kid (that ought to date me, this means I am older than Lolita and
probably Winman as well) and I adore Eliane Elias. I never see her
mentioned, but I have a lot of her older CD's. Is/Was she married to one of
the Brecker Brothers? Anyway, if their music can be had, could some kind
soul point me in the right direction?

Mike also had (has?) a 3 or 4 man group the name of which escapes me that
he was touring with around the same time as he was touring with Da Lata
back in 2000. Did they put out any CDs?

How Lyndon Connah's 3 Blind Mice? or the Gary Husband Trio? I would stll
love Mike's original CD Changes, can anyone point me to where I might buy
it here in the States? Preferably for something less than $27 I will hafta
pay at Mike's web page?

Speaking of which, recently (in my reading) there was a flurry of posts
regarding how the FTC had agreed with various music companies that the
price of CDs was too high. Apparently they'd decided that people had been
overcharged by $500 million. Uh, so what happened, we're STILL being
gouged, and while it is neat to be able to buy older music for the
'bargain' price of $7.99 or $9.99, but dammit most new CDs still cost 15-17
bucks! The price never really ever went down, so far as I can recall.

And, just to amuse you, I sent an email to Brian Flint AND Jennix telling
them how funny I thought they were. AG and Friesen you won't be getting
emails cuz you already know how funny I think you are...and no AG you still
aren't mean.

Have a good weekend you all......

Doug
