Hi everyone, I know it's been more than a year since Hurricane Katrina, but I had a few minor details (job, home, car) to work out before I could devote any time to the digest. Also, my grandfather had terminal cancer and passed away during the Katrina mess. I feel very lucky that so many of my family and friends did survive. I've finally had a chance to go through the archives and read September 2005. Thanks to all of you, for all of your opinions. You demonstrated what true democracy is about. And thanks to all of you who contributed to the Red Cross. (Thanks for mentioning it, Mikey.) I'm sure it helped someone. I'm back in New Orleans now, and the city is still a real mess. I'm living about 20 minutes away in a small suburb. But there is good news. Although my family had to live in a FEMA trailer for about 4 months, their house is completely rebuilt and they moved in about a month ago. Their entire neighborhood is populated with trailers, but that means that people are coming back! Driving through downtown, you see new improvements everyday. Street lights, telephone service, cable service, the works. It's really great that despite all the hardships, people are putting their lives back together one day at a time! That's not to say that all is wonderful. The level of beauracracy at all levels of government is not to be believed. So many people are still hurting and though there are programs in place to help homeowners (slow as they are), the majority of the city were renters and their doesn't seem to be any help for them yet. I am one of the few who managed to secure a small place that doesn't take half my paycheck. (The cost of living has tripled!) BTW, I have been in contact with Monique daily, and she is doing fine, although she and her husband have opted to live in Northen Louisiana now. Anyway, thanks again to all of you who were concerned about us. Just wanted everyone to know, it was a tragedy, but we're still here!
