Level 42 Digest for Thursday, January 19, 2006
Can anyone really see Mike following Mark around the country for 20 days only to guest on a couple of tracks each night?

Me neither.

My guess is either a full tour spot or a guest appearane at the Albert Hall.

I know that the digest is all about sharing ideas, discussions and debates, but over the years this forum has been guilty of over enthusiasm and pushing things way out of proportion.  This only leads to disappointment if things don't pan out as we hoped.

DTers....(that's Digestive Tract ers),

I have listened to the Jazz Cafe CD (most of it anyway) and am really
enjoying it.

In my reading of past digests I remember all the complaining about
how the 'Live' feeling wasn't there because you could not really hear
crowd noise, except for the beginnings or endings of certain songs.
That was kinda odd, but obviously Mark was more interested in the
Music than people blowing whistles, chanting or sing over Jakko's
lines. I read all that stuff with interest and looking at the photo
of the crowd, I even recognized some of the people in the photo. Not
that I've met anyone from the digest, but I have seen pix before.

I know for sure I see Lolita as she wears glasses and has a cherubic
face (round face seems so tacky to say), I also think I recognize
Mike Payne as he is rather tall and very expressive in his manner
(and his typing!). Other than that, I got no clue without hitting
some web pages and trying to figure out who is who.....anybody want
to provide captions?

The music all in all is very good, this now puts me in the mood to
look at the videos Win sent me to really see how things are.

In referring to previous digests, I am at Oct 12, 2000, did Des Lynch
continue to be annoying as he could be?

In the latest AG rant I just gotta echo Win, lame AG, really
lame....you can do better 'n that!

Putting on my fire suit,

Doug

Cheers. Always good to get constructive criticism,
especially from people who have never been amused by
anything I've written.

the funniest

Not a title I've sought, or want, or indeed believe to
be true. Maybe if people stopped saying it those who
demur might also stop feeling the need to dispute it.

Hi there - my name is Gareth Donovan, i'm 38 and an Essex Boy thru & thru. I currently live & work in Hornchurch, Essex in the UK and am married to Sally (who doesn't like L42) and have two daughters, Bethan 5 & Meghan 2 (who have no idea who L42 are).
I got into 42 in '81, via a school mates elder sister, who had the first LP - we used to listen to that & Central Line's 1st LP, over the park, on his 'ghetto blaster'. There was about seven or eight of us who got into 42 at that time - while everyone else at school was into The Jam. I first saw them live at the Hammersmith Odeon, on the tour that accompanied the release of The Pursuit Of Accidents - AMAZING!!!. Between then, and when Phil and Boon split, I must have seen them over fifty times at various venues across the UK. Highlights would have to be Reading & Woolwich (recording the live LP), about 8 nights in a row @ The Hammersmith Odeon in '83/'84 ??? - my mum thought I was mad, Sheffield - it was Mark's birthday and in the encore, a stripper walked on stage behind him to a massive cheer from the crowd. My mate Kev, crashing his car about 100yds from the venue in Guildford (Civic Hall ???). We made the gig...just...but had to sleep the night in the car cos the headlights were smashed. Afterwards, we hung around the stage door til the boys came out to do some autographs, and when we told Mark what had happened he invited the four of us to the backstage party !!!
Being a fan of Level 42 was the springboard into my lifetime love of soul & jazz. I was avidly collecting 42 stuff while checking out other UK groups, like Central Line & LOTW. Then bass players, Stanley Clarke & Marcus Miller etc & into jazz fusion, Herbie Hancock, Lonnie Liston Smith etc......By the time the UK rare groove started, in the later 80s, I was buying very serious amounts of vinyl. In the early 90s I started working in a newly opened soul / jazz collectors shop in Essex called Crazy Beat Records and stayed there until Aug 2004. I now work for myself, from home, buying and selling collectable vinyl & CDs via email lists and the internet. If anyone's interested you can find me on Gemm & Ebay under the name GIRTHDEVON.
I have also been DJing - club & radio - playing rare soul, disco, funk & jazz - since the late 80s and have been lucky enough to get to play clubs & festivals all over the UK and parts of Europe. Hoping to add the US & Japan to that list in the near future - fingers crossed.
Fave 42 songs would have to be Starchild - the 12" version - and a live version of Love Meeting Love that I have on a very old tape - from Hitchin I think.
I am lucky, in that I get sent music virtually every week - promo's of new stuff & CDR comps of old from customers & fellow collectors - so there's never a shortage of listening material. Here's a few CDs that i've been listening to this week.

Post Modern Jazz feat Roy Ayers - Love Not Truth - PMJ 2005 (Brainchild of Jim Wellman - co-founder of The Brand New Heavies - had an album worth checking out in the early 90s too, under the name Time & Space - Crazy Love Songs) - go to www.postmodernjazz.com for more info

Martha Redbone - Skintalk - Blackfeet (from 2004 - I think this is gaining a UK release in the next couple of weeks)

Cooly's Hot Box - Don't Be Afraid - Dome 2004 (Incognito-esqe)

Quantic Soul Orch - Pushin On - Tru Thoughts 2005 (Funk)

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - Naturally - Daptone 2004 (Funk & Blues)

Reel People - Second Guess - Papa 2003 (Quality dance)

Frank McComb - Straight From The Vault - 2004 (Soul)

Ann Sexton - Anthology - Soul Brother (brilliant southern soul)

Candi Staton - Fame Anthology - Honest Johns 2003 (Forget 'Young Hearts Run Free' - this is where its at)

I'll try to lurk less and post more recommend's in the future.

Cheers    Girth
