I had the privilege of going to the service tonight at The Apollo Theatre
for James Brown. It was just the way he would have liked it - funky!
Thousands of people waited for hours to view the body, and they played his music
rather than somber funereal dirges, making it festive. The crowd in
the streets were buying commemorative t-shirts, CDs and some were even dancing
to music that was blasting on 125th St. I witnessed a part and passage of
history, and happy to have been there - and to see him in his casket wearing a
blue sequined suit and silver sparkly shoes...
