My thoughts on the Ultimate Collection II.

I like it. It's good that a fairly thorough B-side compilation has been
released. Generally it only contains the 'extra tracks' that were
mastered up for 'The Reissues' but it's got the electrokingdom World
Machine thing and this new Boon and Mark song which could be
interesting.

Obviously, it's not aimed at the people here, but at the casual concert
attending fan. It's still a great shame that the 12" John Luongo remix
of 'Out Of Sight Out Of Mind' which is potentially the best 8 minutes of
Level 42 music anyone can listen to, is still only available on the Out
Of Sight 12" single. They really should take the time to remaster that
track.

I'm not sure that the 'rarity' tag is really justified. Anyone with
access to a computer could have the majority of these tracks landing on
their doormat within a couple of days using GEMM or Netsounds even
without 'The Reissues'. A part of me wishes that they did spend a little
time thinking about the die-hard fans like us here - especially on a
three CD set. I think with space for over 30 tracks they should have dug
up at least 5 things from the catalogues previously unreleased.

We all know there's plenty of decent material in the vaults that could
be tidied up - in fact I wish they'd have a good go at Morning and
Nothing More To Say - they're great songs, and a week spent tidying them
up would be well spent.

Obviously, the best Level 42 compilation CD is 'On The Level' as it is
the only place in the world which contains the full version of 'Standing
In The Light' - but I thing this latest compilation is probably the
second best every Level 42 compilation CD.

New Level 42 CD - yawn, I've got to agree. I'm sure it will make an
interesting listen. But I'd rather hear Mark making music he likes
(Trash) and collaborating (One Man) than him trying to be commercial on
his own. Much more excited about the possibility of a solo album from
him. However, the real excitement comes form the possibility of Mike
producing some new stuff and touring.

AG Spake:

Couple of quick questions:

1) Did I miss anything since Christmas?

2) Is it worth re-subscribing?

Andrew,
You missed my first bloody post in about 3 years, asking where you were, mate.  What division are Oxford United in now - the Vauxhall Conference or summat??

You also missed something I used to enjoy about this Digest - an Italian fan who wrote beautifully of his visit to two of Mike's concerts.  And Mike still being the top geezer that he is.  Being a father of two, I must be going soft.  (I'm still about 3 kids behind you, right Andrew?).

Oh yeah, I also wrote about The Nightfly DVD-A (in response to a question) but there was no further discussion.  I guess if music is at a higher bitrate than a 192kbps MP3, then it doesn't warrant discussion here.  Funnily enough, I was able to download recently off of Dime-A-Dozen, lossless versions of Slough and Hitchin, and a DVD of Hitchin (I'm sure most people here have these already anyway).  I'd never seen Level 42 stuff posted at the lossless bootleg sites before. (Lossless = compressed file without loss of quality from original)

OK, back into hibernation (away from the stifling Toronto heat).

I was wondering the same thing Andy, but now that I've seen your name on a post, after a very long....
Yes,  yes I say!
I think it's worth it... Why? you might ask, why is it worth re-subscribing after seeing my name?

Well Andy, you sir, are a very big part of this digest. Whether you know it or not you are actually quite funny old bean.
Although quite selfish, I do look forward to reading your posts... some day soon our postings will once again clash
and we shall do battle, with out guns, knives and cannon. not necessarily in that order.

Have you missed anything since Christmas... well er, yes, Spring and potentially Summer!

Viv
