Ahh, as a displaced
Geordie it brings a lump to my throat just seeing reference to the great NE of
England. I saw the original gig in
And a great post from the other side re ‘I Want Eyes’. Very apt.
I’m a big fan of

Hi all,
First off, a PS to my post from the other day. In addition to the three
bands I mentioned regarding my constant defending of new
material/members/releases (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest), I'd
also like to add Deep Purple and Rainbow, though they're both more hard rock
than heavy metal. Reason being is that like Level 42, these are all bands with
both a long history and a dedicated following. Many of whom are extremely
resistant to change, regardless of the quality. One person on a Judas Priest
related message board shocked me by saying that now fans had both Rob Halford
(former JP vocalist) releases AND Judas Priest releases to look forward to-
something which always felt was true. But sadly, those mindsets are few and far
between.
You know what the funny thing is though? As soon as I heard
that Sabbath, Maiden, and Priest were reuniting with their former vocalists
(read: no$talgia), I completely lost interest because I knew that musically,
they'd all be going backwards- not forwards like they had been.
The announcement of the original Level 42 getting back together, honestly,
left me kind of ambivalent. I know Boon and Mark still get on quite well, but I
don't believe that's the case Phil. Reading different interviews over
the years, I get the impression that the underlying problems for the
original split are still there. OK fine, that happens.
Everyone moved on and did their own thing. If my feet were to the fire
though, I'd be more inclined (after a lot of reading between the lines) to
believe that Boon really did leave because of exhaustion, and Phil opted out at
the same time for more creative reasons (and did so a second time in 1994).
Again, that's all well and good. Truth be told, what would really get me
stoked would be Mark, Mike, Gary, and a new guitar player coming together and
creating some new material. If enough of the right elements are present,
call it Level 42. If not, call it something else. But it'd be something new,
something interesting, and something that's moving the music FORWARD.

>>Blimey,
I read the post from Chris Lawless & couldn't believe some of the similiarities I found. One of my favourite Level 42 Albums is also the much maligned "Guaranteed". And I'm off to see Judas Priest in concert at the end of March. And I went to see Iron Maiden in December 2003. I've always put my appreciation of the "rockier" Level 42 material down to the fact that I came to the band from a heavy rock/metal background. Maybe there's some truth in this? And one more coincidence, going back to the summer of (I think) 2003, within a couple of weeks of each other both Level 42 & Judas Priest announced reformations of their "classic" line ups. I too was concerned at the prospect of there being a studio & a live Level 42. I felt that it might have spelt the end of the band totally. Put yourself In Lyndon, Nathan or especially Garys shoes, it would have all ended in tears.<< |
