| Only joking Ian. I think that your observations around the pressure & scrutiny on Lyndon in "Level 42 mode" as opposed to "Go West mode" are absolutely spot on. Out of interest, on the night did the bass player nail the riff at the beginning of "Don't Look Down" as well as it's done on record or Mark King did at The Princes Trust gig? I am truly a king amongst nit-pickers! Oh and Go West's guitarist is a bona fide Axe God. | ipodlounge is a very good source of info for any opod user...the following comes from their FAQ: I listen to a lot of DJ Mix CDs that don't have gaps between the tracks. The gaps you are hearing are actually a function of MP3 technology. Some other MP3 players work around this issue by doing cross-fades between songs or compressing the MP3 headers to decrease the gaps to something that is barely distinguishable. However, this is not done on the iPod. Currently, the only way to prevent this from happening is to record these CDs as one giant MP3 file. iTunes has this option available. MMJB does not, however there are other Windows programs that do. Check out the Software Compendium for a list of good Ripping/Encoding programs. Hope this helps, Winston | ||

See, you guys are having to crank up the bit-rate to get decent sound quality. I rip AAC files at only128kps! > iTunes will let you cross-fade, and by ripping tracks into AAC format (MP3 doesn't do mixed > tracks very well), you can play them through it, but the iPod will always have a slight gap. Then I stand corrected on that point. Althogh I have burned numerous live CD's from iTunes with no gaps, I guess I hadn't really tried it on the iPod itself. Hmm. Z | ||

Hi All
I was walking through Romford market in Essex, UK today when I saw someone
walking with a leather jacket on with 'LEVEL 27
Clothing' on the back, any one heard of this? Also is there a
connection between the LFT track Shapeshifter and the recent band called
Shapeshifters.

| Along with the listening issue, one of my reasons for ripping tracks off CDs is to create a backup/archive copy of the tracks in case the CD gets scratched, lost, or stolen. The tracks sit on an external hard disk drive (about 60 Gb for my collection), in mp3 @ 192kbps. I think what I may actually do (since storage space is getting so cheap) is to re-rip the tracks in the flac format Dan James mentioned or just as giant .wav files so that there is no loss whatsoever in terms of fidelity. For portability, I carry my favoriate tracks around on flash memory cards (2.5 Gb on 4 cards) that snap inside the case of my PDA. I play the tracks on my Zire 71 PDA, which is damn convenient since I use the PDA for everything else. The only drawback is that I lose a little bit of the low end (<120Hz) with playback throught he Zire 71, and the volume adjustment is poor, i.e., not loud enough. Overall, using the PDA for my playback instead of an iPod has worked very well because I have it with my all the time anyway, and it does a decent job handling playlists and so forth. One feature I wish the PDA software player had was the ability to do real-time volume leveling. Anyone use a PalmOne PDA for mp3 playback with software that does real-time volume leveling? On another note, I have been around here since the very early days (sometime in 94 or early 95). This digest was my first big Internet community. This was a very exciting time for me and many others here because of the excitement and possibilities associated with the Internet, mixed with a bit of discussion about Level 42. One of the great parts of the early digest (94-98) was the never-ending talk and excitement about new technology. The last week's threads (re: mp3 players) has brought back a lot of fond memories about the early days. -- Matt Rice, Doctoral Candidate and Research Assistant National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis UCSB Department of Geography +1 805 893 8652 (phone) Santa Barbara, CA 93106 +1 805 893 8617 (fax) rice @ geog.ucsb.edu http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~rice |
