Gang,

With all the talk (at the time) of people favorite 5 (good god how do you
even start to figure that out?) tunes or albums and with talk about whether
One Man or Trash were Level 42 type albums or not I decided it was time to
listen to them again. I can't remember the last time I actually listened to
these two or to Influences for that matter.

I started out listening to Trash and had it in play in my car for at least
a week....I gotta say it is a really nice CD to listen to while driving.
After that I put on a Tony Levin CD and listened to that for a bit.
Recently, I got out One Man and Influences and began listening to those as
well. They all, in a rather tired word, ROCK. I never use that term by the
way, but there you go, they do.

My impressions after having listened to them all is....what the hell is
wrong with people? It seems really obvious to me that if you expect the
musicians to be static and NEVER grow that 'you' (I am not singling anyone
out) are sadly mistaken. Supposedly, we all experience personal growth
(even if we're track kicking and screaming towards it) and we're not the
same person at 40 (or in my case 47) as we were at 18, 21 or 30. So how the
hell do you expect Mark, Mike or any other musician to put out things that
are not part of their life experience anymore? Not being a musician or an
artist maybe I am off on that, but I think you know what I mean.

Influences is really cool, I loved listening to it and the maracas at the
end of the first track (damn I am blanking) are fantastic. I may put that
back in the player on the way home from work tonight.

I have read where people were saying that One Man was overproduced....I can
see their point, but wow I LOVED listening to this CD. There's so much to
listen to on each of the tracks I am finding different things to pay
attention to each time I listen. That's so cool! The CD engages my ears
from the first track to the last and Pamela just makes me grin. It is not
my favorite track, but I like it nonetheless.

Trash...I understand now what people meant about it not being 'finished'
product. I get that now, listening to music that have more production in
them, but you know, I think that this makes it that much more endearing. I
like the songs on this as well and while I wonder what it might sound like
with more put into it, I can easily live with what I've got.

Enough of that.....regarding the dinner that some of us appear to be having
with Laura....if Laura gets to bring her kids, can I bring my daughter? She
just turned 5, so hopefully if Laura's kids are near her age they'll be
engaged as well.

I was also wondering if the Level 43 guys (or is that just 43?) have a CD
out? Or at least some mp3s or something to which I can listen?

One last thing....where did you people go when the during the digest's
hiatus? I was looking at the digest archives and there's nothing in there
at all from when the digest died to when it restarted. Where was it? Can I
find archives from during the time of darkness?

That's enough outta me.....bye bye for now.....

Gang,

I have reached early may 2000 and what do I find....some guy, a Mr Nuckels,
saying he lives in Fremont, Ca....Here I thought I might have been the only
Level 42 fan in the Bay Area, and what do I read.....but this.....he wanted
to have a Level Fest here....and I missed it. Sigh. Now not only am I
behind the times...but now I am sad, too. (No comments).

Anyways, if any one out there is a Bay Area resident....send me an email.
It might be nice to say hi to someone else equally obsessed.

Does anyone still have the Digest T-Shirt? I think Matt Rice made them....I
pulled one of mine out recently and wore it....what cool shirts they are.

I love you guys and gals.....

Back to reading.....

1.  Total Recall

So, do you really like Total Recall, or is this just a tool of your verbose trade?  I suspect both.  You like the film as you have a deep passion for film,  an intellectual fondness of science fiction, but essentially cannot escape the familiar vision of three perfect C cup breasts on a midget hooker.

>now we also have a Lisa who thinks she's a bloke called Colin?

Funny that. We receive the digest through two emails, one being my wife's.  I replied from her call sign.

>And would this be a good time to come out and admit that I'm really a New Yorker named Lolita?

Andrew, Lolita, whatever the hell your name is, all I want to know is, how can you live with yourself?  Your are Travis too, aren't you...come on, fess up.

>And what's more I take offence at your yuletide bonhomie, "Colin".

I figured someone might. You can't say Red Cross or Salvation Army without upsetting someone.

>Friesen? Mean? The man's about as scary as a balloon on a stick.

The guy is a Canadian who likes drums and Grommet.  I can vouch for him.

Happy New Year All.

Colin
