Okay, I solved the mystery of the CDs. It turns out the Victor Wooten
CD that Winston referred to has actually been in the works for years - Christian
told me he recorded his part of it three years ago! The CD I was referring
to is indeed coming out later this year, and that is a jazz CD that has a
plethora of bass players on it. The release date is supposed to be this
summer; when I hear what it is I will let you know.
On a side note, anyone who lives in NYC and is interested, Jaco Pastorius
Big Band [Word of Mouth] is going back on the road, and they are killer. I
saw them last year with Victor Wooten as guest bassist. This time in NY
its going to be Christian McBride, and the gig is on June 18th and/or 19th [I
have no idea where yet - I will find out from him and post here]. I am
definitely going and anyone else who would like to, please e-mail me
privately. I will assume at least Winman will come with me, as he was my
partner in crime the last time, so we can make it a mini Levelfest...

| I think someone said a few days ago that they saw Go West play, I too have just been to see them at sunny Bournemouth on Thursday evening. Their set was as tight as anything I've heard by our illustrious favourite band (which is as high a compliment as anyone can give, I feel). Lyndon on keyboards, he did a great job - although from seeing the 2 bands play live I feel he is better suited to playing with Go West than L42 (maybe he doesn't have to live up to the expectaions playing with them that I am sure most fans will guage him against if he is playing with L42 so he can be more relaxed and enjoy the gig). Anyway, just an opinion... no-one need blow their tops over it! Kind regards, Ian Lovell | ||

| Well, i've never tried the aac format, but mp3 works fine for me, at 160kps. Obviously you can use whatever kps you decide, but it sounds fine for me, and i'm only listening on earphone for my daily commute. Plus i dont really care to convert my files from aac to another format, when i want to use them for other things like dvd, etc. I've got the entire L42 catalog on mine, but i hardly ever listen to it. I've been more into books on tape lately, which is kinda weird, because you cant zone out like music, you have to really pay attention. ;-) MIke, there is a way to set the ipod or itunes to play live tracks as 1 file, so you dont get that pause between songs. I think its a setting when you actually import the tunes, you can set it to import it as 1 file. Win p.s. got my arse back ;-) | ||

| Mike wrote: > I have small ears and sometimes the earpieces fall out! And I could do with a bit more bass. Mike, spring for a set of Shure E3 pro earbuds (the sort of thing Britney and Madonna wear in their stage wireless sets). They come with several sets of earpieces, so you can custom fit them to your own ears very easily. And the sound quality is AWESOME - as the earpieces completely seal your ear canals, it's like having a subwoofer inside your skull. :o) List is $179(us), but they can be found on the net for much less, and are well worth the price!! You'll never go back to the cheap ones that come with an iPod. > Remember Tony Sharpe's Madacious Mix (brilliant piece of gear). That will depend on your playback settings, specifically how you have the "crossfade" function set. Z | ||

| > But what about the sound quality? That was the thing that always bugged me about .mp3 files: the grungy sound quality. Without doing a direct A/B comparison, I can't distinguish AAC files from the original CD tracks. And yet they're much smaller than .mp3's! I can't really complain about mp3 sound quality. I'm ripping at 192kbs and I don't notice any artifacting. Even the stuff I have laying around at 160 sounds great to me (and I know my ears aren't *that* bad - lol). I did try out AAC for a few CDs (for reasons I'll explain below) and while I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, I haven't noticed it to be much better (but yes, they are smaller--comparable I suppose to MP3-Pro). I did just download some stuff in .flac format and that format is fantastic. Sadly, iTunes doesn't recognise the files, so I have to convert them manually before importing them. Besides, they're huge (it's a lossless compression so they end up being about half the size of an uncompressed wav/aiff file). > I have the Alpine iPod interface mounted in the glove box of my PT Cruiser GT Turbo, and an Alpine CD head unit in the dash. I keep my iPod in a Matias iPod Armor case in the glove box, plugged into the Alpine box. As my entire CD collection lives on the iPod, as well as on my computer in iTunes (the only way to get music into an iPod), I seldom need to bring the iPod in the house, except to load new music occasionally. See, I now look at the iPod as an external hard drive for my PC so that I don't have to keep all my MP3s online. My laptop only has a 30g drive, so plugging in my iPod gives me an additional 40g of storage for MP3s (well and I've got some videos and pictures and other stuff, since it shows up as a hard drive). I wouldn't have room for all my work stuff if I kept a lot of music on my internal drive. > The car rig keeps it nicely charged, and my entire music collection travels with me everywhere I go. The other day I got my teeth cleaned at the dentist's, so I unplugged the iPod from the car, and took it along with a pair of Shure earbuds, and listened to Steely Dan's remastered AJA album during the procedure. Much more pleasant that way! I looked at those, but they were more money than I wanted to spend. I ended up with a pair of collapsible KOSS headphones. I always thought KOSS was a step up from a K-Mart brand, but apparently they make some high-end phones too; these sound great. > Remember Tony > Sharpe's Madacious Mix (brilliant piece of gear). When > ripped to iTunes, it comes as separate files so I'm > wondering, when I load it onto the iPod, whether it'll > still play continuously, as intended...? Ah yes, I have two of his mixes on CD laying about somewhere! A few of us on here have been swapping similar mixes between ourselves. They're a lot of fun to make (although I think Tony did his the proper way with a pair of turntables--we've been doing them digitally ala Mixmiester). Unfortunately, there isn't any way to get the iPod to seamlessly play tracks like that. iTunes will let you cross-fade, and by ripping tracks into AAC format (MP3 doesn't do mixed tracks very well), you can play them through it, but the iPod will always have a slight gap. I wish it supported pre-buffering and cross-fading as I have a lot of DJ mixes. |
