I have some sobering updates to pass along:

Monique & husband are 'safe' - they are over 1,000 miles away now in Michigan, but 'may' be heading back to the region - although specifically where they are awaiting to find out where the refugee centers are going to be.   She is being told that her house is fine - although we cannot get confirmation of this, and some media reports say their area is completely destroyed - so some mild, okay hellvalot of confusion.

Julie & family - to my knowledge are still in Shreveport - I do understand that the area where they live is completely gone - nothing left, no houses, no cars, nada - I have been unable to reach her since Monday, hope to hear from her soon.

As of the time I post this here are the lastest news headlines:

1:     Rescue Operations for New Orleans have stopped, too unsafe, all hospitals in the affected region are losing patients, being attacked by gangs, have no more medicines, plumbing is out and all waste is all over the hospitals.

2:     The entire region of New Orleans and surrounding suburbs are to completely evacuate to Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Tyler, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Memphis - they are estimating the refugess at over 1.6 million people!

3:     Anybody reading this PLEASE contribute to the American Red Cross.     http://www.redcross.org/

I fear we are only seeing the beginning of this horrible event, it is so hard to believe that a US city is under Martial Law, with riots and looting rampant, gas prices show no sign of coming down, millions now unemployed and homeless, I have never seen anything like this in all my days - it is very hard to comprehend the scope of this.   I know that the tsunamis last year in Indonesia/SE Asia were larger in scope and over 150,000 died and lost everything - hard to believe that this current situation could match or top that - very sad!  I have visited New Orleans twice in the past two years, it is a fav city of mine, and it is very hard to come to grips with the fact that the city has been wiped off of the map!
