| Ciao digesters, I have been a bit offline lately, but here's a quick report from Luxembourg, where I drove from Duesseldorf (300 kms of snowy, crappy autobahn - when will Germans start fixing their motorways?) to see Dominic's gig. The place (called Conservatoire de Musique Luxembourgoise, or something in the line of that) was surprisingly nice. It reminded me of some buildings by Alvar Aalto, and it had possibly the best acoustics I've ever experienced in an auditorium. The gig started on time in front of a half-full theatre. Dominic was accompanied by Mike Lindup (who has gained quite a few kilos since I last saw him - just like me :o) on a fabulous, brand-new, perfect-sounding piano, Rhani Krija on percussion, Nicholas Fizman on bass/guitar and William Topley on vocals. The show looked almost totally improvised, and you could see the good feeling there was, especially between Dominic and Mike. Nicholas was sometimes out of sync with the rest, but other times he did amaze me with his technique. Young Moroccan Rhani was a real surprise with his percussionist talent. He was one of the few that know how not to get in the way of other instruments. A few pearls that those who haven't been trained to drive on the ice (my Finnish experience did help!) missed: an acoustic version of Love Meeting Love, La Belle Dame, an excellent remake of Fragile, Uptown, featuring Topley on vocals and a flamenco-sounding version of J.S. Bach. After two hours of good music I waited outside a bit, bought a CD and after almost everyone had left Dominic showed up together with William. They took a couple of pics and signed a few records and T-shirts. Mostly, they sounded like extremely down-to-earth people, chaps you could chat about anything with down at the pub. Dominic's daughter (called Eva) has just been born, so I don't expect to see much of him for a while. Mike also showed up (after I asked for him), and although he didn't remember our encounter in 1992 in Florence during the Guaranteed tour (bad memory, man!) we discussed some Level 42 stuff. It still feels that there is some edges to be sharpened between him and Mark, although he did tell me to have been happy to play in Mark's new album. I guess that's all - best wishes for a Merry Christmas to all of you bunch, and remember to give me a shout if you come to Rome. Cheers, mac |
