I just saw her perform last night - I happened to surf The Blue Note's website and saw that yesterday was her last night there [one of the reasons I love living in NY!]. She is now fronting a sextet that features Oliver Lake on alto sax, a tenor player, a keyboardist [played a very funky Rhodes], drummer, and a turntablist [i.e. DJ]. The sixth member was a guy who played multiple instruments: a euphonium [type of tuba], trumpet, flute and bass clarinet [my old instrument!]. What made him notable to me is that I have never seen anybody solo on both brass and woodwind instruments. The music was the type of funky jazz that reminds you of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters.
She did not sing, and actually just laid down very funky grooves - no real solos and she stood in the back [the horn players were up front]. Some of her mainstream fans were likely disappointed, but I thought it was a great show. The name of the group is The Spirit Music Sextet - if they come out your way, definitely check it out...

>> From: Green, Laurence <Laurence.Green @ carillionwsp.com> The difference is Duran Duran are comprised of their original members. Try reading old copies of the digest when Level 42 was still together ? the environment was quite different. << Er, yeah, I know. I wrote them. I recall the day you showed up all green and eager. >> From: jt <jtraci @ yahoo.com> Now come on, we're generally bored here, fess up and tell us why it took you 4-5 years to watch the damn thing... << Not a very interesting story, really. Took me two years to get a DVD player, and by that point I'd completely forgotten I owned the disc, so it was another two years before I watched it. But I received the latest DVD last Friday, and I highly recommend it. Good sound, good production values. But the Lyndon Connah haters will be disappointed; he plays rather well. (Uh, that is, when the sequencer gets out of his way.) ...Alex... |
