Hey Gang

I just read all the latest posts.  Good for you Lolita.  Good luck in your endeavors.  On the 80's and new music, tons of great stuff from the 80's, except stuff like the tompson twins, which seems like a good idea at the time.  Culture Club or Tom Tom Club are far better mushy pop.  But what about the 80's iteration of King Crimson, or Magazine, or Killing Joke, Joy Division, Grand Master Flash, Stanley Clarke, and of course, our beloved lads.  Even Yes has the fabulous Drama and a few other albums (which were not as good, but more popular).

I tend to take years before finding the new music I love forever.  In the last 15 years, I have come to love bands like Jamiroquai, The New Deal, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, The Red Hots, to name a few, in addition to the new music from the artists I enjoy, like Bowie, Dan, Yes, etc.  I think, like every decade, the 90's have brought great new styles and sounds.

I saw Yes in Toronto on Friday evening.  The venue was about 12,000 people and I had 6th row floors in front of Steve. The sound was phenomenal.  The band is superb. The music is amazing.  They opened with Going for the One, then Sweet Things.  They did an acoustical set and Roundabout was a highlight of the show.  Steve then did a 10 minute Clap like jam that I remain in awe of.  He is by far the most entertaining guitar player for me to hear and watch.  Note that I grew up on Squire, who is always a showman.  South Side of the Sky was powerful.  The crowd sang the vocal harmonics.  Yes has become a classic act and are a fantastic touring band with all of the original members. If any of you are at all interested in any of their music, I strongly recommend a show.  Yes rock.

I'm next seeing the Shuffle Demons, a local sax quintet of music majors with an intelligently silly approach to jazz.  Gonna see The New Deal in July.  I believe the Musical Box is coming in the fall for The Lamb.  I've seen the Foxtrot/SEBTP tour twice, and it is remarkable.

I guess I'll have to travel to see whatever Level 42 live show I can.  I'm starting to feel like I've gotta see Jamiroquai and Level 42.

Hi all,

Hope this finds you well. I very rarely post to this forum, but have subscribed & read for who knows how long...feels like 8 or 9 years? Has the Digest been up for that long, on and off? Fabulous. Eric, you are fantastic.

Anyway...I am a purist myself and like to read about L42, related books, music, etc.
I personally would rather not read about politics/ideology, 9/11, death, very personal horrific experiences then the subsequent bickering, flaming, fallout on this Digest, which, of course, were the only two topics posted this Sunday morning. Disappointing. ( I included the above quotes solely to concretely and clearly illustrate my point, for those were the catalysts of this post.)

Anyway, we are all extraordinarily intelligent Digesters and probably engage in political discussions and information exchange elsewhere on a daily basis. I know I do. I also know that sometimes it's hard to compartmentalize ideas and thought, but I rather enjoy being free to relax and not read about the horrors of the day, at least for a few minutes each day. Simply put, literally *thousands* of political/9-11/etc message boards exist, and there is only one Level 42 Digest.

My $.02., however, I doubt seriously I am the only one who feels the same way.
Thanks for listening. ;)

On topic, I can't wait 'till the member database section of Level 42.com is done, to upload a photo, bio, etc!

Anyone else a Bebel Gilberto fan? Can't wait for release of her new album next month!

Cheers,
Arcelia ;)

Jay, with respect for your right to free speech, you
made me recall a piece of advice my dad used to give
me: "Never put your mouth in gear while your brain is
in neutral."

Cheers - Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

P.S. A couple of my Aussie mates were working at the
WTC on that day - luckily, they survived. I've heard
their accounts of what happened and I still get
goosebumps when I see THAT footage.

--Lolita

>that in my statement I am saying
> others deserved to not get out. I would never imply
> that others deserved to die.

This is semantics really; “god got [you] out,” “he let
[you] live.” This surely must mean “god” _didn’t_ get
several thousand others out, therefore not “let” them
live.

Tonight I will go home and water only some of my
plants.
Now what does that say about the plants that I didn’t
water? Do they not “deserve” liquid pleasure? No,
probably nothing like that, but there must be _some_
reasoning behind the method, no?

Now “deserve,” indeed, may not be the proper word
here. Shall we settle on “chosen,” as it’s a more
religiously meritable word?
Or maybe with your severely egotistical theory you
have another.
Basically, as the oxymoronic saying goes: same
difference.

>BTW - were you there
> that day?

This is irrelevant. But no.
Are we only allowed to have an opinion on something if
our geography is in-line with the circumstances? I’m
not in Iraq, shall I eliminate all thoughts I have on
the matter?
You offered forth something printed in a National
newspaper.

>Did a close relative or friend of yours
> die that day

Also irrelevant, especially as I wouldn’t let a status
of ‘closer to the heart’ affect my thoughts on
anything. Step back and view is my policy.
Whether I had an ex-girlfriend then working for an
investment firm there, or retained the services of a
law firm therein, or I simply thought the kid selling
CDs in Strawberries was a cool guy, or if I’ve never
even been to New York, I would never consider the
livings or passings of various lives by your theory.

>I normally would never print something like this for
> public consumption,

I guess I was a bit curious why you posted the
original article. I quite aware that several fellow
list members are successful in their employment
fields, not too mention have political and/or
religious affiliations, but few others feel the need
to broadcast such stuff.

>or address what I actually said,
> not what I didn't say.

I did, hence the quotes. Or are you admitting that
your theory has no opposite pole?

> To make such a ridiculous
> inference is beyond insulting.

My apologies, it seemed pretty straight-forward to me.
A theory, not quite unlike when, say, P Diddy publicly
states that he believes his multimillions are
hand-given to him from he-with-the-beard while others
are dying by the hour of starvation.

Lolita, I am fully aware that life is a whacky thing
and people sometimes need to do personal things just
to stave off the madness, to get through. Someone
suffers a loss it’s seemingly far easier to say, “god
took him. It was his time,” then it is to just deal
with the given situation.
But if one is indeed going to make up answers and
avoid formulations one can’t be too startled if
someone ask them to “check your math” or “show your
work” [ah, maths nostalgia!].
Again, I’m not sure of your intentions, aside from
“simply for information,” but I would have to think
you will appreciate those that post or email you with
compliments, so, again, my apologies for not acting
like you would hope but, frankly, your theory, to me,
leapfrogs “beyond insulting.”

> Jay, its really too bad you are such a bitter
> person.

I always thought I came across more so as “tangy”.

Our (not really-) regularly scheduled program:
For the marginally bored and to those that don’t peek
in on the web-list, Gary Husband has re-aggravated his
back, but is slowly healing. Feel free to email him
kind words.
He is also planning to still do the “level42” gig
toward the end of the month.

All best,
j(ay)

>As I stated when I posted the article, it was simply for information purposes -

And I for one found it interesting and enlightening. It's always good to get
an understanding of what makes fellow fans/digesters tick and quite how much
is acheived by L42 fans. Whether one agrees with what these fans do or not
is irrelevant in this context just interesting.

Keep up the good input Lolita
