I can’t remember the exact set list, although I’ll provide it soon, but I think Mike went on to play a couple more tunes on his own, then he invited his band on. I should say that his band were brilliant. I got the impression that they really loved performing with Mike and performing his material. In particular, (not to take anything away from the others) I thought the drummer, Tristan Banks, was amazing. This man can play drums. A lot of the tracks called for spontaneity and improvisation and he did it so smoothly and funkily – it was a pleasure to hear.
For those of you who don’t care for piano solos, there was only two or three of these. The rest of the performances were with the band. The latin feel to many of the pieces was stunning, and hearing Paxiao live, with the full percussion was pretty special. Lasso the moon was astonishing.
Mike’s exposition of songs in between numbers was interesting - his humbleness and humility is always apparent. In particular he spoke about the inspiration behind ‘Hours By The Window’. His performance of ‘hours by the window’ was the best single performance I’ve ever heard – I just did not want it to end. I’ve always thought of it as a powerful song, but I never though it could be just as powerful without words.
It was a great concert, superb. It was a shame about the attendance, but I couldn’t help thinking that everyone there will give such a glowing account that each attendee will encourage at least 5 more to the next tour – and I for one can’t wait.
I asked Mike if he intended to release any songs, and he said he plans to release a song album next year.
What attracted me to level 42 in the first place was the uncompromising attitude towards music. Music first, everything else second. Mike obviously set out to make a considerable loss on this mini-tour. Basically for each pound I paid to see him, he probably has to pay the same out of his own pocket. But he clearly enjoyed it. I think he just wants to perform his music. It’s great music, and he’s doing it for the music. That’s Level 42 for me, a bit of that old thrill back in my life for an evening. The fact is that it was a great concert irregardless of the fact that it was Mike. Even if it was someone I’d never heard of I’d have come out of the concert raving wildly about it.
I recommend the concert to anyone.
