| --LJ >He is the only bass player I have ever seen who plays >electric [a mean funk bass at that], >acoustic [his >home instrument] and also uses the bow extremely well >[what is that called??]. Well, Stanley Clarke and John Patitucci seem to be off your radar... I saw CMcB when he first surfaced (solely on the upright bass) with Joshua Redman and was quite impressed, his first solo release was also a nice listen. Sadly, with his second album he delved into the electric instrument and it was flatly unimpressive. The gig I saw in support of this album was even moreso. Granted this was a few years ago, but I’d still say: If what he’s doing in strictly acoustic: go for it. Electric: take the pass. Either way it’s probably better than most stuffs out there... Although, AG, I am writing this post *un-biased* and can’t think of any little usually ever-present personal tidbit to add it; so colour me insignificant. j(ay) [if you want a taste of some of his work meet me at the usual spot, the usual time.] __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? | > 1. 'London' > From: Green, Laurence > > Blimey, has that place improved? The last time I went it was a putrefying open sewer. Oh yes, I'm told it's really picked up. Apparently some of the locals are close to advancing beyond grunting. > 2. Christian McBride > From: Lolitaj @ aol.com > > Christian McBride is one of the best jazz bassists playing today. He is definitely worth the trip! But it's in London... > He is the only bass player I have ever seen who plays electric [a mean funk bass at that], acoustic [his home instrument] and also uses the bow extremely well [what is that called??]. Showing off? > GO SEE HIM! But it's in London... At the Jazz Cafe... Thanks for the advice. If you could ask him to be sure to give Geoff Keezer plenty of space, that would help. Next time you see him at the neighbourhood watch, or wherever. > 5. McBride is worth it. > From: Tom Foolery > > Christian McBride is what Ray Brown might have been if he could play faster. Speed isn't everything. As my wife keeps telling me. Talking of Ray Brown, his Live At Starbucks CD features Geoff Keezer (wow, man, it all links in like some huge cosmic thing) in sparkling form. Wouldn't it be great if Jimmy Tarbuck opened a chain of coffee houses? But I digress. > I have seen him supporting other players (Benny Green's piano comes to mind) and you won't find a more fluid and tasteful upright bass player out there. But it's in London... OK OK, I get the hint. I'm just a bit concerned that with it being Christian McBride's show, there will be a bass solo in every song, and if Keezer is sitting there twiddling his thumbs it will get a tad frustrating. I'm quite happy to go and see Julian Alsop, but not if it means Tommy Mooney has to sit on the bench. (Stop me if the football analogies get a bit recondite). > And, if anyone is in the mood to buy used CD's, I've > got my list up: > http://www.emeraldsoul.com/buysedcds.html I had the wherewithal to insert the missing letter in this link, but I still couldn't find a list of CDs. All I got was a picture of a mountain range with a green sky, and I already have several of those. Is it your mistake, or have I come over all Cockney? Some miscellaneous questions for anyone who cares to address them: 1) What the hell are The Propellerheads doing? If anyone lives in the same apartment building as Alex Gifford, kick him into gear. 2) Where the hell is Stevie Wonder's new album? We all know it's going to be a disappointment anyway, but being made to wait this amount of time for it is ridiculous. 3) What the hell happened to Tom Waits after One From The Heart? I haven't heard the last couple of albums, are they even vaguely listenable? 4) Is Rufus Wainwright any good? Or if you prefer, how the hell good is Rufus Wainwright? Normal bickering about lyric websites can now resume. If only someone would create a "what Mark King says at the end of the Something About You video" website, that's what we really need. AG PS If anyone knows a quick, one-stop fix for the about:blank homepage hijack, please let me know. This will hopefully not mean anything to most of you, but those who recognise it are doubtless as hair-tearingly frustrated by it as I am. ___________________________________________________________ALL-NEW Yahoo!
