Well said Marc Daniels from yesterday's digest. Summed up what many of us are feeling about that recent post.
I'm not saying it has to be all Level 42 chat, cos there sure isn't much to talk about nowadays and I generally enjoy the off topic chat, but spare us the self-promotion please. I'm also not interested if you got invited backstage every night of the tour, or stood for 72 hours in the queue at the Jazz Café to get front row to fawn over MK, or was the only one to get your left buttock signed by the entire band - not impressed. Got a Kingbass ? - well jolly for you that you've got 2 grand to spare on a toy. Don't often get angry so you can tell I've had enough. Dean

I used to look forward to reading and participating on
the digest, that seems like ages ago. I think those people are
reading more into what Lolita posted a week ago, I found it a great read - even
though I am a strong Liberal Democrat though! I think some
have nothing better to do than dissect people's post and try to find some way to
slam or find some hidden meaning - some have too much time on their hands!
AND TO BE HONEST - most people have very strong feelings and emotions from that
evil day - but you know she was in the World Trade Center's South
Tower and you know she deserves to have a unique perspective and insight
than those of us who watched it on television and read about in the
papers. So remember that before you decide to try to condemn or over
analyze what Lolita has posted - I am sure that the pain and terror of that day
is still with her and thousands of others directly affected and probably will
have this fear and anguish for the rest of their lives!
MIKE
PS: Some of you "new" people may want to go back
and read the archives (1994 and onward) if they are still available - you will
see the community that used to be strong and vibrant on this digest - I miss
those day! You will also note that it tended to be a more positive place
where offers for material and trades were the order of the day - not slams,
rebuttals, and caustic comments!

Hint: the real culprit and rightful recipient of our hate, disgust and anger at the 9/11/01 events are Osama Bin Laden and whatever evil intelligences moved him and al-Quaeda to commit those acts.
As for the statement, "God got me out of the building", let's think of it as those who did not get out got to go to Heaven that morning, and those that were spared get to spend an extra however-long to pay taxes and bills and rent, and put up with the other annoying things about this world.
Now, I need to buy a DVD player so I can re-live the Level 42 Hammersmith show from last November!
"answers on a postcard, please..."

| Perhaps it is time for my celebrated voice of reason to rise from its slumber and add its own perspective to the current hullabaloo. I'll admit to having been somewhat bemused by Lolita's posting of the original article, a fairly unsubtle piece of trumpet-blowing by any standards. But then I speak as an insecure, self-loathing, slightly paranoid Englishman who guards his anonymity fiercely. Lolita - how shall we put this - doesn't seem to struggle with such issues of self-esteem, so she does her thing. Each to their own. I've been saying for years that anyone who doesn't like what I write can scroll past it, and the same applies here. As for the "God got me out" line, I totally understand why it rankled with many people - including me - but I would hazard a guess that most of those annoyed by it are not religious, in part perhaps precisely because we've never been able to answer that pesky "Why does God allow terrible things to happen?" question. Most religious people have been able to answer that, or at least accept that they won't find the answer until they die, and in that context Lolita's wording becomes a simple expression of her belief system. Jay would say that maybe she should think beyond the immediate personal significance of her words and extrapolate logically to the wider implication, and regarding a subject of such heightened sensitivity I contend he'd be right, but then which of us is not guilty of failing to appreciate the way comments of ours might be misinterpreted? Certainly not me, and still less the crown prince of controversy. Anyway, my main reason for wading in is to take issue with a point raised in Marc Daniels' otherwise flawless post today. In it he wrote: "I was concerned to read that, by your writing, Jay could only have an opinion on the subject if he had been there. Where do you get this from? How do you define "being there"?" Nothing Lolita wrote in her response to Jay’s message said this. She said: "BTW - were you there that day? Did a close relative or friend of yours die that day, and if so were you the last person to see them before they died? All of the above apply to me, so excuse me for being sensitive to inflammatory statements like what you said." She never said he had no right to an opinion, merely that she is (understandably) very sensitive to comments made on the subject. Although easily confused these are nevertheless very, very different things and I felt it was worth pointing out before Lolita starts being damned for something she didn't write. Changing the subject, I was browsing the Take 6 website the other day and stumbled across an article by their bass Alvin Chea entitled 50 Things That Irk Me (About This Bush Administration) (any Republican fundraisers reading this may wish to steer clear). It struck me as an unusually strongly-worded article for a member of a gospel group that, as far as I'm aware, has never made any overt political statement. I'd provide a link but for some technical reason lost on luddites like me it only shows as www.take6.com. From there you need to click on News, then Bass Lines May '04. Not that it matters but it was written before the sterling job the coalition is doing bringing human rights to Iraq came to public notice. And finally, here is a joke: Customer: I'd like a packet of helicopter flavour crisps please. Shopkeeper: I'm sorry sir, we only have plain. AG PS If anyone has a complimentary ticket for Brian Wilson at the New Theatre Oxford, do drop me a line. Fifty quid! 'God Only Knows' may be one of the ten greatest pop songs ever written, but fifty quid! I could see a third of a Madonna show for that kind of money. PPS The above piece to be included in my forthcoming book "Look At Me! Look At Me! Postings to the Level 42 Digest 1997-2004".
