Eric, I gotta really disagree with you. When the band was doing the really small Venues like JAZZ CAFÉ, I think the audience ‘might’ have been comprised of Mostly die-hards, but it was evident to me during the larger venues of the recent
Most of the audience did NOT know the more obscure songs, and were there For the nostalgia trip. Clearly the big hit songs were more popular and got a Bigger reaction form the crowd.
How can you explain that the latest tour with its mostly classic hits is much More successful than the tour that preceded it with the perfect mix of die hard trax?
Because someone pays 20 or 30 bucks to see one band does NOT make them A diehard fan. I’ve paid that and more to see bands that I dont even own records Of. Duran Duran, Kiss, Aerosmith are a few that come to mind. I know they Have lots of good songs, so its worthwhile.
As far as RUNNING IN THE FAMILY goes, I don’t think they played it on every Tour during this mini comeback, but I guess it was a hit. It
went to #6 in the And number 1 in a few countries,

| In a message dated 9/16/2003 5:26:34 AM Eastern Daylight Time, level42 @ worldmachine.com writes: > With its intricate jazz composition, winning melodic lines and trenchant lyrics about corporate greed, "Everything Must Go" is already the song of the year. In a perfect world, which would exclude illiterate rappers and lip-synching teenagers, Steely Dan would be vying for Grammys with Macy Gray, the late Warren Zevon, the Pretenders, Coldplay, Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles and Wyclef Jean. > But it's a real world, so Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent are more than likely to squeeze in there and become spoilers for > more deserving work. Why is it that Beyonce' should be "vying for a Grammy" and Justin Timberlake's work is less "deserving?" Just pondering this critic's opinion. :) Angel, who's never heard Steely Dan's last two albums | ||

I'd wager that > the crowd is predominantly die hard fans. That's a wager you'd lose, I'll bet. Even at the Mark King solo shows (Jazz Cafe, etc.), my impression was that die-hards were a minority. And the whole point of getting the name back and playing larger venues was to broaden the audience beyond the die-hards, wouldn't you think? Matt Rice wrote: > I hope you didn't mind the 'casio drums' at the concert. > After the endless whining and moaning about the album, it's good to see > that you enjoyed the show! :) You must have liked the "endless whining and moaning" since you have seen fit to re-open that can of worms.... ;o) I didn't exactly say "casio drums", rather it was more like "casio rhythm section". I still cringe at the sound of "Blues Beach". Fortunately, they played the better tunes from the new album instead. As for Keith Carlock, yes, less restrained in a live situation, he proved himself to be a most impressive rock drummer. He's still not my favorite though. While bassist Tom Barney was funking up some of the basslines, Carlock did not follow suit, choosing to play it straight from the record most of the time. Nevertheless, the entire band was tight as a tick, and it was a fabulous concert!! Peace - Z. | ||

| Well looks as though that I have stirred up a hornets nest this time (again!). But I must agree with Eric and Alex's' sentiments that the majority of people going to see the band this year will mainly be diehard fans (mid to late thirties) with a smattering of younger twenty-somethings and some might even be taking their kids! lol. RITF was for me the beginning of the end. As a follow-up to World Machine which I thought was very good it was a bad 'let's appeal to the masses' Pop Album. With SITS, Guaranteed, and Forever Now things got worse and worse. Admittedly they had their early bloopers too (The Chant has begun was awful and the video....painful!) If I had a choice of let's say 15 songs for the boys to play it would be..... Heathrow, Dune Tune, 88, Love Meeting Love, Lying Still (Probably the best ballad I have heard by ANY artist, the lyrics are just brilliant), Kansas City Milkman, Love Games, Chinese Way, Starchild, Something About You, Hotwater, Shapeshifter, People, Out of Sight Out of Mind and A Pharaoh's Dream. I'd mix it a bit (some instrumentals to start of with, some ballads and then get the place rocking with 'the classics.' Last night I played on my trusty VHS The Old Grey Whistle Test that showed Level 42 live at the Brixton Academy and compared it with the Live at Wembley Gigg and personally I felt that the Old Grey Whistle Test was soooo much better. Anyhow time to go ....keep the faith Danny | ||
