| I just joined up so please don't flame me if this has been discussed (I'm sure it has) but a lot of the "magic" of Level 42 was, in my opinion, the soaring backing and sometimes lead vocals of Mike Lindup. There were many songs where I felt the best bits were Mike's vocals, you know, I'd come to a point in the song where I thought wow, and then I realized it was the vocal performance that knocked me out. For this reason the new incarnation of Level 42 leaves me somewhat cold. Don't get me wrong, I like Mark's vocals and his bass playing is nothing short of magnificent but without Mike's falsetto wailing in the background it just ain't Level 42. Just one man's opinion, I'm curious what others think. Barry | ||

| Mikey Payne wrote: > I was in Saudi Arabia (USAF) for the first go around Just out of curiosity, how many veterans (or active duty personnel) do we have in our little community here, and what did you do? I know of the following: 1. Don (USN, submarine navigation) 2. Winston (USAF, cryptographer) 3. Mikey (USAF, ??) 4. Willem (RNN, diver) 5. Carl (USMC, ??) I'm sure some of you Brits must have been Fusiliers or Black Watch or something....speak up! Cheers - Z. | ||

>> From: Colin Gupta <thegoop @ sympatico.ca> Isn't that why video killed the radio star? ... it is the music that ultimately dictates the worth of a song...once we all agree that image and 'hip-ness' have never had anything to do with rock and roll, or pop music, or whatever it is we're calling it this week. << Much as it bores me, I'll have to disagree that image is irrelevant for popsters. Yes, even I will acknowledge that everyone from Elvis onwards has had some sort of image. But where it all really turns into a yawn-fest is with videos. Sure there's the occasional interesting video, and I'll admit I'm now used to knowing what every artist looks like, but it's so obvious that the main purpose is for advertising. Spend $250 000 on an entire album, and then turn around and spend twice that on a single video? What the hell is up with that!? I say put the money into the _music_, and let the image-conscious get their fill from the weekly award shows. Fashion fever forever brand new always out of date ...Alex... | ||

| ''''I've loved level 42 since the mid 90s. I rarely listen to their old stuff...etc'' One's tempted to ask 'if they're so good, why do you think they've taken the name of a clearly inferior eighties group?' and will this trend continue? | On Tuesday's digest, Travis Baker wrote.... >>The Goold twins away shows what true musicians they >>are!!! i hope they will tour near me!! Fat chance of that ! - I will lay money on the fact that the GOOLD brothers will NEVER tour again. Actually, their great talents are going to waste as neither of them are really doing much which is a great shame. Imagine the excitement on here if Phil announced he was writing a new record for himself. Dean | ||

Oye, I forgot about this one...I hate that track. And I hated it before someone once 'said' that it sounds like the closing music to Saturday Night Live, which is oddly true and taints it further. So I wouldn't hum it for 10 seconds, let alone all day... I'm all for a change, but for this to sit by any of L42's other instrumentals is just... not right. > Right Razor Boy? "moving on" to some is seen as swimming in circles, I guess. But yes, the Goold twins were nifty. ciao, j __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
