Don, be sure to check out the live DVD by John Mayer..'Any Given Thursday'.
it's very good and has a cool 5.1 audio mix. They keep mostly audience
ambian in the rear channels, so it gives you the live show feel. It also
has 4 tunes that were never recorded previously.

And YES, Angel was the person who introduced me to John Mayer in
the first place..and Venice as well, another cool band...and i got to
be in their latest music video, and...well, long story.

I know for a fact there is a Comfort and Joy 12" promo by Mark Knopfler. So I believe the one for sale on Ebay is this one.

Sorry if this has been covered before but does anyone know at whom and why
Mark sticks two fingers up at someone as he leaves the stage at the end of
the Live at Wembley video (just before "and that's not all folks" comes up
on screen)? I can only guess it might be the sound engineer (Kerry "first
line of attack" Lewis).

...and what is Mark saying at the very end of this
song [OOSOOM] ??????????????????????
<<

I, too, have spent many a year attempting to decipher that last wee
vocalization. As near as I can tell he sings "so long, and thanks for all
the fish." Any other attempts at interpretation are more than welcome.

Good point Don, pop stars, until very recently, actually had to PLAY an
insturment. Yes, pop has always been about image but it was in addition to
musical ability...

Pop today is even worse and MORE empty than it was in the past.
...
It has become
EXCLUSIVELY about style....they come on stage and it is all about the
clothes and image becuase there ARE NO MUSICIANS OR INSTURMENTS ON
STAGE....leaving all attention focused on the dancing.
<<

But, my brethren, give ye not up on all hope. I know many of you will
cringe at this reference, but have a look at what Kylie Minogue does in her
live shows. She is the very definition of pop in many ways, but she has a
full band playing live, and she sings all the lead vocals live. (Okay, so
the backup vocals are prerecorded.) She could easily save some dosh by
canning the band. She could easily wow the ignorant masses at the shows by
lip-synching the leads. But she doesn't. Praise be! There is light from
the southern hemisphere! (My interest in Kylie has absolutely nothing to
do with her tendency to wear, well, not much.)

I'm not trying to be rebellious here, but ramming a point of view down someones throat day after day is rather tedious and monotonous. But hey, another point of view.

However, enough of that. What I'd just like to point out is that grupo Mark King, old Level 42, new Level 42, Gould brother 42 or whatever  - to me whoever is in this band, whether Mark King is Level 42 or not, as long as he adds bits and pieces extra to those knackered old hits, i'll go along to the shows. Then the name/band will stay relevant to ME.  To me, the beauty of the shows is hearing those new extra bridges and inserts in songs like Hot Water and TSGD or hearing a new interpretation of an old song like True Believers.

The day that the shows become a parody of the 'best years' then I will stop going, but the new shows have vigour and the 'showmanship' is superb. As long as the shows remain relevant to me then I'll keep going - if I wanted a note perfect, beat perfect performance I'll go to the opera - in the meantime, i'll put up with the so called 'second string' musicians that make up the new group. ;O)

I'm not anal enough to start creating a musical intellectualism and hierarchy on here, and to start beating others with it. If I don't like what I hear,I say so and move on, but I don't try to deride other peoples point of views in the process. Hear them out, question their point of view, respect their view, and agree to differ.

And as for the Pop vs musicianship debate, I think this musical snobbery has crept in here too.

Because I'd guess that many people on here are over 30, we've started to become what my Dad sounded like when hearing my music when I was in my teens - "this music is crap, no talent etc etc, they only press buttons on their keyboard, no talent blah blah"  Now, I'm not a fan of all the pop out there at the moment, and the karaoke 'smooth faces', the chin wobblers (Whitney, Celine and Co) and urban brigade will have their day, but because they don't play instruments, does it mean that the music is bad or talentless ??  I'll have to say that I like some of Daniel Bedingfield's stuff, I play Kylie and still listen to the new chart on Radio One. Because I'm the wrong side of 35, and that these artists give me pleasure, does that make it wrong - they may not play instruments, but they are relevant to me, and their talent is their performance or the mix. Yes, there's lots of sh*t out there, but there was alot of sh*t in the 80's, in the 70's  etc.  L42 used to and still make alot of the concert output in a studio somewhere - with samples galore. Does that make for a talentless performance ??

People here like L42 for different reasons, the old band had their time and the new band have their niche.. Mark King will no doubt take more of my hard earned cash in the near future, but don't TELL me not to listen to a group because they aren't technically superb enough when compared to a band that doesn't exist anymore. I have my great memories, and I think the old band sounds better and is tighter than the new one, but 'Time marches on' and the new one puts on a mean performance.

Can i ask all those who have been moaning on about  the abilities of the new members of the band if they can do any better? If you can then why not email Mk and ask for an audition If not then why not shut the F@*K up and either enjoy the standard of music they are playing or go and find a band that you can enjoy without having to moan about it.

You have to realise the old LEVEL 42 is no longer together and we now either enjoy the new L42 or go else where for our listening pleasure im sure none of the old or new line up including MK will give a toss as there are still plenty of us still willing to go to the venues to see them play and buy the CDs, DVDs etc

And the same for those moaning about the name being used, Hey guys its a name dont let it worry you too much ! maybe try and get out a bit more.

And for all the rest of us that dont moan see you at the next gig

Rob thanks for reminding me. Thought I got away with that one. Ah well.(ASS - ME)

Anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of Level 42 playing at the Regal in Hitchin in 1982/3?

I was at this gig and I vaguely remember it being televised on 'Sight and Sound'. From what I recall they played an excellent
version of Love Meeting Love.

Monique, you've hit on something there...wouldn't a Big Easy Levelfest be a great idea?  I visited New Orleans once for only a few hours, several years ago (my dad was having a leg amputated in nearby Slidell).  I have always wanted to go back under more pleasant circumstances and spend more time.

How's that new D-Day museum I've heard about?  Bon Mardis Gras!!

Cheers - Z.

Dean, the only reason I cited "Forever Now" (or maybe
it was "the sunbed song") is due to this being a still
dangling thread from the "kiddie pop" stuff that
rattled the creaky cage of those with confidence
issues.

> From previous
> personal correspondence with him [AG] i know he's

Well, if you were not so intent on posing in front of
a crowd and decided to privately email me your little
whines, you may (I do stress the may) have found out I
too and not such a bad guy.
Or, I may have proved to be even more overbearing to
you.

As for my "wit", while I am no Oscar Levant, I have
little to no doubt that one that uses phrases like
"king of" -whatever or makes pub/beer analogies (or
urine mentions, with 3 'explanation' marks, no less)
has little comprehension over the realm of, say, dick
and fart jokes.
As for your amazing little pub analogy (wonderful how
much you seem to pick up about me, you _must_ be more
than just a "professional music listener", a) I think
it is _very_ clear that you and I congregate in
different places b) you spilled you beer all over
yourself before my dinner was even served......but
keep them coming, you must give confidence to _some_
people out there...
although please take note: there is a vast difference
(and as far as I can tell, the only "differences" you
and I have) between and informed opinion and an
opinion.

and back to reality:
I think a curious thing about the 'what's in a name'
game is that it seems that MK gave a semi-shot at
trying to achieve solo suck-sess (I am not talking
_Influences_ here, that was clearly not a spliting
from L42, just a side project); he fumbled around with
it and created what we now know as _Trash_, but didn't
release it because, possibly, a) it wasn't pop
enough, b) no record house was interested c) he didn't
feel like fine-tuning it...so then we get some odd
sound bites, which, I think is that the album is "too
angry" (or am I thinking of some even weirder quotes
from Prince on the non-release of _The Black Album_?).

So then, after time, and after (I think, my order of
time frame maybe be slightly askew) MK gets rid of his
home studio (and, well, the home) _One Man_, clearly a
very different avenue, which I'm not saying is bad,
but it does seem that it was trying a wee bit too much
for, say, the Bryan Adams crowd.
Then we get some tours, even with cool things like
taking internet requests. Very nice. The Mark King
Group. Then we get Grupo Mark King (sounds like a
fish). Same instrument players, still incorporation of
a pretty good mix of L42/solo MK. Why the name change?
There is a BIG difference in being cute and bad
business. Then we get the 'purchase' 'adopting'
'stealing' 'handed down' 'raping' etc (take your pick,
add your own) use of the name LEVEL 42. Same
instrument players.
Just seems weird to me.
Hey, when we are young we always play around with
different group names, that's a small part about what
is fun in a band (at first).
But this here, done in public is like some twisted
verion of musical chairs. OK, the Group/Grupo thing
didn't work; MK solo is, seemingly, never gonna make
it. So time to milk the past. I'm a bit lost on the
logic on maybe not seeing is the wheel (the band),
which some of you will certainly say is not broken,
but it sure as hell is wobbly and squeeky, could use
some changing, or 'tightening up'. It seems weird to
change your hat (the name) so many times with never
even looking at the suit (the band, including
management) you are wearing. Especially if you are
going to put on a hat that was nifty in the 80s.

Sorry, that may have streamed a bit too much. But
maybe you see (a bit) of what I'm saying.

However, I am not saying that with Keith Jarret (now
there's a thought!) on keys, non-brothers on guitar,
or whatever, that the band would be great, or huge, or
whatever is desired.
Just some thoughts.

FYI, off topic(s)
--for those that dig Doub Wimbish, he and Will Calhoun
are doing some project together (just the 2 of them)
called Headfake Sound System. Not sure of any dates,
although they are here in Swiss'land the middle of
this month, so I guess they are about Europe right
now...

with a small bit of ratiocinativeness,
j
