| -Stephen Wright >No surprises as far as the set was concerned, __but >who cares__! Well, as several have estimated that the turnout was a mere 300 people, -and this was a gig that was fairly easy to get to for a great deal of people-, the simple answer to your obviously-not-really-a-question is: about anyone with the word “redundant” and/or “superfluous” in their vocabulary; those that attend concerts for the music (as this was, pretty clearly, an ‘event’/gathering thing and not just a concert to several attending); those that don’t find stimulation within the confines of “more of the same” etc etc. Essentially: non-“true fans”, I guess. To “Mr”. Keith Ashley, I bloody loved your disclaimer, and I hope to see it after every one of your posts, best thing I’ve read since Travis’ last post and the absurd fact that non-children are "eagerly awaiting" a new harry potter book. I can't comment on the Steely Dan talk, as the album before this one did not-a-thing for me (granted I did just hear bits) and have no interest in hearing this one. But don't worry, Don, a Grammy could well be within reach, surely none of your critiques and comments toward the new album circumferenced the complete vapidity of, say, Norah Jones (or just about anything else that wins a grammy)... and roll the Yahoo! commercials... j __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Just a few wee thoughts on Steely Dan's _Everything Must Go_. "The Last Mall" Nice understated drum groove. Polyrhythms that call no attention to the playing. "Things I Miss the Most" Is she dead (the "ghost" reference), or did she divorce our narrator? And could she play that '54 Strat? "Blues Beach" Nice perky little number. Is this the single? "Godwhacker" Killer groove. Freakin' killer drums! Kieth Carlock has groove oozing from every pore on this one. Check out those ghost snare hits all over the place. It takes serious engineering to bring that subtle clarity to the final mix. "Slang of Ages" Er, who let Becker at the mic? The man practically raps his way through this one. But that's okay; we've got the backup singers to hit actual notes. "Green Book" Almost a boogaloo groove happening, which is very unusual for these guys. "Pixeleen" Lyrical stab at linguistic pop culture. Not a highlight, but it doesn't suck. Fagan tries falsetto? Good luck with that bit live! "Lunch with Gina" Hands-down winner for hilarity. "So I'm nailed to the floor in the no-option zone / there's about zero chance she'll give up and go home." If that rings a bell with anybody other than me, you have my sympathy. And if a keyboard solo can be comedic, this one is. My second favourite, right after "Godwhacker." "Everything Must Go" Fabulous intro flailing: it's an ending at the beginning. Does that mean something? Airy production as always. Also, check out the vocal harmonies at 4:23. Brings chills to me spine! Overall, their decision to stick with real instruments for the most part will serve them well in the long run. Horns and pianos: those don't get dated. Give a listen to Michael Jackson's _Thriller_ if you want to hear how big a mistake it can be to use sounds tied to a particular era. Becker's incessant guitar noodling isn't my favourite feature on the album, but it's part of the Dan sound and lends an additional level of cohesion to the set. And that's only from listening on my ancient discman at work. Haven't even heard it cranked on a good system yet. I recommend this album to all. ...Alex... P.S. If anybody quotes me for any reason whatsoever, my attorney will have your head on a stick! 'Cause you're just not funny, dang it all to heck! | ||

| Who was the girl i was standing next to at the Sherwood Forest concert? i was right at the front just left of the center.she was having a picnic before the start with her friends and she offered me a spicy Dorito,i kept standing on her blanket. I think she could have been part of the Mrs Pink group, also one of you had a camera. I was the guy to the left of you all with blonde hair. I must admit you are all as raving mad as me, you really made it a great night standing next to you all.I hope your going to the Manchester concert i will say hello to you all if you are. Also we stopped behind to speak to Lydon at the end of the night, what a nice bloke he is, he even tried to get us one of Gary Husbands drum sticks(because we pestered him for one). Look forward to seeing you guys later in the year. _________________________________________________________________ Get Hotmail on your mobile phone http://www.msn.co.uk/msnmobile | ||

I believe the distortion has something to do with
the type of CD used. When this was released , CDs had only been around a short
time and the material used on these CDs does distort and warp over
time.....

| >6. New Dan >From: Colin Gupta < thegoop @ sympatico.ca> > >It seems Andrew takes exception to any SD objection. Really? On what evidence is this statement made? As one who has consistently railed against the juvenile ‘you’re not a Level 42 fan if you don’t love everything they ever did’ movement which some of the less lucid members of our disparate community propagate, I’d be offended if I could get the energy together. For the record, I actually left a Steely Dan equivalent of this Digest because I couldn’t stomach the slavering adherence to everything they did, the nadir coming when the proprietor of the list went into a sulk because several people agreed with my indictment of Alive In America as a largely worthless release. [And let me take this opportunity to state loud and clear how fortunate this Digest is to have in Eric a host intelligent and altruistic enough to provide a forum where disharmony is a virtue.] Case in point, you sing the praises of the song ‘Aja’, which along with ‘Deacon Blues’ I find entirely too vague and self-indulgent, and in Steely Dan circles that’s pretty close to heresy. >Come on Andrew. Are you telling us The Last Mall, which is very IGYish is >better than most of the material on 2AN? As it happens no, and nothing I’ve posted suggests I would say that. Better than about half of it maybe (if it surprises you that I find something which is reminiscent of IGY agreeable, take a brief look at my e-mail address.) ‘Godwhacker’ and ‘Lunch With Gina’ on the other hand are richer, more vivacious and more imaginative than anything on 2AN. EMG has the sound of an album made by men with renewed enthusiasm for the art of the straight ahead song. It rips through its nine tracks in 42 minutes, only two of them coming in over five minutes in length. There are none of the longueurs which dogged every album after Katy Lied. My main astonishment at Don’s original post was that he suggested EMG sounded like they were ready to give up the ghost, when my own listening experience had been diametrically and euphorically in discord with that. Two Against Nature is a superb album by any standards. It was astonishing that after so long they were able to produce an album of that quality, and more to the point it cemented their style as timeless. But EMG promises to be a great album by Steely Dan standards. It has wit and verve which Two Against Nature doesn’t, right from the false ending of The Last Mall to the mischievous lyric of the sublime Everything Must Go (and a bonus SD spotter’s badge to the first person to name whence EMG nicked part of its chord sequence). Most of the criticism of EMG I’ve read seems to be aimed at the instrumentation, the lack of flashy playing. Such criticism misses the point. Steely Dan albums were peopled by great session men to facilitate the best delivery of the songs, not to foment opportunities for extravagant soloing or musical showmanship. If Becker and Fagen were just interested in showcasing talented players they’d be making jazz records, not shaping their own unique body of work. It’s all about the songs. It’s always been about the songs. And this is why EMG is such a great album, because the quality of the composition is as high as it’s been since maybe Pretzel Logic. Certainly I could live without some of Walter Becker’s rather indeterminate lead guitar noodling, and I’m amazed that after 11 Tracks Of Whack nothing statutory was implemented to ensure Becker never took a lead vocal again; but if these quibbles are what it takes to get them producing albums inside 18 months, and to have those albums full of such vibrant and engaging songwriting, then bring it on. But hey, it’s just my opinion, and what do I know? I’m not a musicologist. Each to their own, life’s too short, choose your own banal platitude. AG PS Wasn’t, by coincidence, the ‘handlebar moustache guitarist from the Doobies’ to whom you refer Jeff Baxter? Or did I dream that? _________________________________________________________________ Use MSN Messenger to send music and pics to your friends http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger | ||
