| -Mr David F Jacobs Nicely put. - Jackson, Lolita >IS Prince tired of America? Can’t blame him. And Toronto is a nifty place. Just avoid people named Friesen. >Another problem is the "jazz/funk" slant of the CD. Sheeeeeit. Clearly the best move for Prince (etc) is to stop the NPG thing and makes some changes. But yeah, why would a studio anticipate that? That would take thinking… > planned appearance on Jay-Z's record, "Black Album," Didn’t Prince kinda have an album called _The Black Album_? -Eric J. Hansen > I do think that we're in a period where there > are no truly great jazz masters who are popular... > unless of course you count Santana... Santana? Did I miss a little ‘smiley’ thing there? You’re not serious…. neither “jazz” nor “master”…you spoiled my digestion for the next 3 days… -alex.friesen @ sickkids.ca < > Is that a serious recommendation, or are you [AG] >just enamoured of the name? he’s serious. Some good Big Band stuff within. Also, do check out Hiromi (with an “I”; AG made a typo, AG made a typo!!), as he suggested. Bill Bruford’s Earthworks would be another I would throw into the mix of slim-to-few Good Things Happening in Jazz. And, of course, the Keith Jarrett Trio. >I've been pleased to hear the new > lads, primarily Connah in > his solos Paging Mr. Friesen, paging Mr. Friesen, your otolaryngologist requests to see you for an emergency exam. and, Benny Carter (w/ Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, etc) just died, age 95. j(ay) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? | Eric wrote "That said, I do think that we're in a period where there are no truly great jazz masters who are popular... unless of course you count Santana... but I'm talking about Ellington, Davis, Coltrane, etc. I doubt any random person on the street would recognize their names these days, and I can't think of any living equivalents to these folks (again, who would be recognized by most people.)" So you've never heard of Herbie Hancock, Courtney Pine, David Sanborn, and of course, the best saxophonist in the world, Kenny G (er - maybe not)? Andy K | ||

>> From: Jackson, Lolita <Lolita.Jackson @ morganstanley.com> IS Prince tired of America? The paisley-clad pop artist has plunked down $10 million for a mansion in Toronto, we're told, and plans to move there for good. << He bought it about a year ago. It's one of the medium-sized lots in what is by far the most posh area of the city, meaning it's a freakin' huge plot o' land by urban standards. His place is right on one of my regular cycling routes, but I haven't seen him yet. http://ca.maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=h8pSVep_0TrFkMoaSksDvYAhS4BQauYEuz18PNzHYi2NXi_qjr6IufV5du4OifjI07LGFMQCdQ--&csz=N+York, ON&country=ca&cs=9&name=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat =&BFClient=&mag=8 >> "Let's be honest - no one is running out right now to buy a jazz/funk album," the source sneered. << He lost me around his Batman period, but Rainbow Children is excellent. I would definitely run out right now to buy a new jazz/funk album from Prince. ...Alex... | ||

| >1. Jazz >From: Mr David F Jacobs < >man_of_funk @ hotmail.com> > >I think L42 started out as jazzers for sure, and are quite capable of doing >that, albeit with a funky feel. I’m afraid I disagree. At least half the original members of Level 42 were a long way short of the musicianship required to play jazz. There’s ample evidence on live recordings to verify this, not least on the Physical Presence album. They were perfectly adequate for the music they were making, but jazz was not for them. >3. re: state of jazz >From: Eric J. Hansen < >ehansen @ worldmachine.com> > >There are plenty of new, fresh and talented jazz acts out there for sure. >Tune in to your local Sunday morning jazz brunch radio show You must be kidding. You’ve got more chance here of finding a radio station dedicated to mime. The BBC keeps banging on about its numerous new services, but apparently what we need are yet more rock and pop based stations like BBC6. Jazz FM is available to those who like jazz of the Bermuda festival variety. Other than that, there’s the odd hour here or there if you look hard enough, and that’s it. I particularly like the way one of these is scheduled for 4pm on Saturday, since clearly nobody could have an interest in both jazz and football. >(or better yet, go out and see some jazz) and you'll be reassured. Anyone passing through Oxford could do a lot worse than check out The Spin on a Thursday night, above the Wheatsheaf off High Street. Unless you’re a close watcher of the British jazz scene you won’t have heard of anybody who plays there, but there are some stunning gems to be uncovered (for example last year former EBTG and Beautiful South keyboard player Damon Butcher, who closed with a 10 minute Watermelon Man slowed right down and funked up like Superstition). >That said, I do think that we're in a period where there are no truly great >jazz masters who are popular... unless of course you count Santana... but >I'm talking about Ellington, Davis, Coltrane, etc. I doubt any random >person on the street would recognize their names these days, and I can't >think of any living equivalents to these folks (again, who would be >recognized by most people.) I agree, and I wonder why. Are we the general public actually becoming less musically literate? Discuss. >4. Messin' With the Kid >From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.ca < >alex.friesen @ sickkids.ca> > >Is that a serious recommendation, or are you just enamoured of the name? I chanced the album because I thought it was such a fantastically stupid name that you’d have to be one hell of a musician to go out and play in public with it. And it turns out to be a storming big band set, all originals, peopled by some superb session men, and for good measure one of the clearest, most vibrant big band recordings I’ve ever heard. Check out www.gordongoodwin.com, and then send me one of their baseball t-shirts for enriching your life. AG _________________________________________________________________ Tired of 56k? OK, as long as we're on the topic of Jazz artists, I have to pipe in here and mention the artists that I've recently discovered. Here's a list of some of the latest CDs I've purchased: Boney James (Ride) Richard Elliot (Crush) Norman Brown (After the Storm, Better Days Ahead, Celebration, and Just Chillin') Also, I recently picked up Daryl Hall's new album, Can't Stop Dreamin'. I know he's not really considered a Jazz artist, but I really like this album, especially the single that has been getting airplay on my local "smooth jazz" station, "Cab Driver". If you liked Daryl Hall or Hall & Oats during the 80's, you'll probably like this album too. -- Michael Monsen There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. | ||
