I've never bought one of the many 'tribute' albums out there, but it's semi-interesting (or comical) to think of who could/should cover Level42. >Was there ever a video for The Chinese > Way? | Nobody has mentioned Frank Sidebottom as a possible cover artist. He's done "Like a Virgin" and "I should be so lucky." I once saw him at the Mean Fiddler, where he was a knockout. He, as you will all know, is best known for his Queen covers, especially on his EP, Freddie Mercury and the Magic of Queen. I can hear him in my head now. magic! Even more interesting, I find, is that Alan Holdsworth played on Guaranteed. If you've heard any other Holdsworth, you'll know that this is indeed an extremely bizarre choice for a match-making with a Level 42 vacancy. Anyone else agree/disagree, and/or have any other nominations for the strangest thing, musically, ever with Level42? :) Matt B wrote: > And, in a completely unrelated event, rumors have surfaced that Zaphod > Beeblebrox, notorious gangster and president of the universe, has > reportedly taken up residence near the city of Washington, DC Here's wishing Matt and his nefarious pal Zaphod a huge welcome (back)! :) Maria wrote: > So I wanted all to let you know the new album is not called > "Bird".... sorry guys, it was a misunderstanding... Tom Foolery suggested the band Zero 7, which I happen to dig also. I would compare them fairly closely with the band AIR. Another band that I like alot currently is called Lemon Jelly... check out their CD "Lost Horizons". Absolutely, positively, NOTHING even remotely Level 42, but they're quite innovative (and generally in the same universe as Zero 7 and AIR, hence the reference). You can sample trax on Amazon.com. I'm sorry to have to post such a message, this
being my 1st message to the Digest, but I feel I must speak out.
I am well aware that everybody is entitled to their
own opinions, however, I am getting a bit bored with the attacks that new
members of Level 42 are coming under from so called fans of the band who have
started a "We want the Gould Brothers Back Campaign".
Does it matter who the best
drummer/keyboardist/gutarist is, surely all contributions to
the bands repertoire, be they large or small are relevant; a guitar solo
here a drum roll there. Nobody has attacked
Alan Murphy for his work, nor Allan Holdsworth for that
matter.
The fact that Mark has decided to play as Level 42
does not bother me, lets face it with the best will in the world and, the
assasination of the Pop Idol culture a dent on the Top 40 is folly.
Its just great to here good music played live by great musicians.
C'mon people, get a life, give up the bad mouthing
(YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!)
Peace to all,
Matt | ||

| Hi all, I posted 5 questions on here for a bit of fun ...there weren't too many replies so anyhow I thought I'd post the answers. Prior to Level 42, Phil and Boon Gould played in a band on the Isle of Wight called 'Joe Bear' Prior to Level 42 Mark King played drums (yes drums!) in a band called 'Big Swifty.' Other members of the band were Ian Hargeaves on Bass guitar and Chris Mew on Lead Guitar. Nathan played in a band called the 'Urbanites' and in 1974 Phil Gould was the member of Level 42 who had a No 1 hit playing 'Pop Muzik' with the band 'M' Below I have pasted some info some people may find interesting about the 'early days' of music on the Isle of Wight. It was sent to me by a gentlemen by the name of John Metcalfe who played in a band on the Isle of Wight (IOW) in the 70's. He has given me permission to reproduce it here. They are his opinions and may give you more of an insight. There are things here I need to look at/research too! 'Just shortly before the forming of Level 42, Mark King did a solo album. Although it is difficult to get hold of, you will probably be able to download it on Kazaa.com or a similar mp3 source. Although a bit primitive by the standard of later work, there is a good version of the old Cream/Jack Bruce hit 'I Feel Free'......not as good as the original, but nonetheless a pretty good rendition. On the subject of other bass players, a mutual acquaintance of Mark King and myself related a conversation the two of them had a few years ago ref the Mark King manner of composition, when he freely admitted that he took a Stanley Clarke riff and built it into a new song...Stanley Clarke is well worth a look if you are not familiar with his work already. Also Mark King has a very limited vocal range Since chatting, I have remembered other bits of trivia relating to musicians on the IOW in the 1970s and 1980s which may be of interest to you. Nathan was, to say the least, a precocious brat and even at a young age would trade on the image of 'My brother the pop star," but even at 16, he was a pretty accomplished guitarist, when he joined the Urbanites together with John Lytle and Mike Jolliffe. Mike and John were both in their mid 30s at the time and were widely regarded as two of the better musicians on the Island. As the brother of the pop star, Nathan gave an interview with the Isle of Wight County Press, when he described his inclusion in the Urbanites as 'paying your dues...and using the band to get experience and then moving on to something better.." The band was only semi-pro at the time and JL worked for me during the day as a site foreman in a property development company of mine and I can still remember, after reading the article, he couldn't speak with rage! Nathan was kicked out of the Urbanites The only other person on the Island at the time to become a pop star was a drummer who has since received a sort of cult status. His name was Razzle. (Nick Dingley.) He played with a Finnish punk Rock Band called Hanoi Rocks and they were dreadful. His principle claim to fame was being killed in a car accident by the lead vocalist of Motley Crue. The Motley Crue singer received a prison sentence for the incident and Nick received the Isle of Wight version of a pop star's state funeral. If you search the net, you'll see what I mean about cult.' I hope this is of interest... feel free to use the forum or e Mail me for more discussion. Regards to you all Danny | ||

| Well, since you asked, here what else I know about it. The gig was in Phil's garden in August 2000. Phil, Mike and Boon were doing their usual bits, with Mike on vocals. A guy called Al Slavik played bass, I think he was a friend of Phil's. Rupert Brown who played on Boon's Tinman played drums and percussion. I don't know the reason for Mark not playing, but I suspect that since it was Phil's gig he simply didn't ask Mark. I was basically just a garden party done for a bit of fun. They rehearsed for a couple of hours during the afternoon (not having played together for 10 years), and they played in the evening. Boon was a bit tense, so his playing isn't really what it should be. Mike really sparkled since he was all "gigged up" from playing with DaLata on tour. The recording was made with two mikes suspended from the top of the tent, so the sound quality isn't that good, although it's not as bad as it could be. Phil then did some mastering and burned a few copies on cd-r. These were sent out to those who played on it and I got a copy too so I could put the Haunted House track on the site. I've since had it signed by Mike at a later DaLata gig. This is probably one of the rarest Level 42 recordings in the universe after Strategy. I would love for more of it to be available, but it's all up to Phil since it's his recording. I've been trusted with a copy, but that is a trust I'm not willing to betray for anything less than a million dollars. ;-) Apparently there was a camera team present from Channel 4 who shot a bit for their Top Ten 1987 programme which also featured interviews with Mark, Phil and Mike (Boon was interviewed too but his bit was dropped). I forgot to mention earlier that the pix from the gig are at http://www.boongould.com/views4.htm Most of the pix are by Paul Gould (another brother). Some are by the lady who is now Boon's wife. There were talks about doing this again annually but as you know Phil and Boon's mum has been ill for a while and passed away recently so the Goulds haven't really been up for it. Tom that's quite a list. Thanks kindly.
I too love Junk and have found it impossible over the years to obtain any
material. I have some on compilations and have heard more sounds at Faffco
but would like to obtain the albums. I'll have to look into the others you
mention.
I like The New Jersey Kings and Mezzoforte
too. I also very much enjoy Jazz
Pharmacy. At http://www.sinistresound.com/index_site.html you
can download some of their mp3s.
I am really getting into Remy Shand, another
guy who does it all.
Eric, I love A Funk Odyssey. I know
this is old news but the varied complexities that turn out to be pop with those
arrangements are impressive. I find it totally original and magnificent.
This is pop in Steely Dan's League (different, of course). I've
been a Dan Fan from a young age but could live without Kamakiriad. The
Nightfly on the other hand...well I just can't imagine a
world without Andrew.

| I don't understand it, in my personal opinion I feel the Level 42's Guaranteed album is some of the best work since True Colours. There are some absolutely fabulous tracks on it, like Overtime, With a Little Love, and She Can't Help Herself. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I have heard this so much it is just driving me crazy. It seems like when L42 changed their sound they lost some fans along the way. A shame it is. I for one enjoyed all of their musical stylings from their self-titled album all the way to Forever Now. I really think that Guaranteed and Forever Now have never got a fair crack of the whip; they are both really great albums. I guess I'm just a hardcore fan. To paraphrase Paul Crockford's words from Level 42 - The Definitive Biography: "If you listen to the first album, and you listen to Guaranteed or Forever Now, they are worlds apart, but they are all Level 42 records. The band changed, and as fans we either come along with them or we don't." I for one choose to come along for the ride. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! | In the mid 80's as a very happy Level 42 fanatic I regularly spread the word amongst my friends and work mates, saying there wasn't a single song I didn't like. Then walking into a record shop, where they were playing Running In The Family and my heart sunk. How could my favourite group put out such dross? >From there things went from bad to worse. Someone at work told me he had heard on the radio Level 42 were splitting up. Deep Sadness. Then Staring At The Sun - which in my opinion is their worst album - came out. No wonder the Gould brothers left the group. The late 80's were a time of depression for me. The 90's faired no better. I tuned into a late night Channel 4 music show to see MK warble out Guaranteed, a track I thought fit only for a B side. But OH NO! the latest single, surely not. I like some of the tracks off Forever Now some not. If I need a Level 42 fix I always return to the albums released from 1980 to 1985 when they were at their peak and all was right with my world. Just skimming the last week and a half's Digests and caught my being summoned... Loundy, not Landry. Probably not, in most case, maybe, in some. There is nothing like being warned that you shouldn't have read the message you just finished reading as an attempt to preserve the confidentiality of the message you just read. Confidentiality notices are an attempt to take something from the world of faxes and apply it to the e-mail world-- poorly implemented, where it doesn't really work. Inserting the notice before the message might be more useful than after. I have seen this maybe twice, ever. In many cases, they are just plain silly-- like confidentiality notices on public (and archived) mailing list posts. Personally, I think the mindless blanket use of these signatures does more harm than good. Signatures along the lines of "views are expressed are mine and not those of my employer" might be more useful. Unfortunately, people really are ready to misattribute anything they can to your employer, even when to do so would be silly. When reading Mr. Randall's post, I did not attribute his expressed view of Guaranteed being a Level 42 parody to being the views of Mouchel Consulting, Ltd. However, always remember, one out of every two people you meet is below average... Signatures like Ms. Jackson's are an unfortunate result of regulation and liability insurance, and I do not put these into the same category. Mr. Randall gets the dumb signature file of the week award--let's examine: >The information in this e-mail is confidential and intended to be >solely for the use of the addressee(s) Confidential? Sent to how many people, and then archived on a public Web site? Yeah, right. Solely for use of the addressee? It was sent to a list. Am I even an addressee? > and may contain copyright >and/or legally privileged information. Of course it is copyrighted. So? (And by whom?) Legally privileged? Am I an addressee? I had to copy the message into my computer's RAM to read it. I copied it when I downloaded it from my ISP. I am using and disclosing it to comment here. That semicolon is a killer... >As Internet communications are capable of data corruption no >responsibility is accepted for changes made to this message after it >was sent. For this reason it may be inappropriate to rely on advice >contained in any e-mail without obtaining written confirmation of it. Oh please. Wanna fight over proof? No, I swear the message said "stand down and disarm" when I sent it. It must be the gremlins in the Internet that changed it to "fire at will." Clearly, I take no responsibility for Will's current well being. My fax (which is broken into packets and routed over an IP network and reassembled at your fax machine) might look like written confirmation, and would clearly not suffer from gremlins (?!?). I won't even discuss the reliability of things such as the U.S. Postal Service... I only received one item this week in a Postal Service body bag. Our former mail carrier was referred to as "the cretin." He dropped our mail in the street, the bushes, or at the first house on the block... >In addition, no liability or responsibility is accepted for viruses >and it is your responsibility to scan attachments (if any). Wait, you tell me this AFTER I have read your negligently (or willfully) infected e-mail and exposed myself? And how is this enforceable? Good thing you are not requiring in your e-mail signature the turning over of my first born child, as he is already pledged to a parking attendant at one of the downtown Chicago hotels in exchange for ransoming back my car. >Please note that for business purposes, outgoing and incoming emails >from and to the company may be monitored and recorded. I'm a big Sugarhill/Tackhead/Wimbish fan, I'm suprised someone from this stable would admit to it (becauase as we all know, there's always been a bit of inverted snobbery towards L42 amongst musos and jurno's). On the Jamiroquai thing - to me have had a paralel relationship with L42,; early critical acclaim, commercial succes, unacrimonius splits amongst key members and then ridiculed by the very critics that once cited them as being 'the next big thing' - is it just me? *although I believe Stuart Zender had a massive contribution towards their output and you can hear the difference --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Free eMail and Web Site for Macintosh Users http://www.applelinks.com/ ---------------------------------------------------- The "iClock" on at the Applelinks Store http://store.applelinks.com/ ---------------------------------------------------- Web Hosting http://hosting.applelinks.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- | ||
