| Trashman wrote, I was in Southampton on Saturday going to the 70's funky musical 'oh what a night'. Opposite the theatre is a church - big billboards outside the church show it is being converted to another 'signature Jo Dafloes cafe bar'. Does Mark still own the business? CB, Hi, No, Mark has nothing to do anymore with Joe Daflo's. I asked one of the girl at Joe Daflo's last year. Some said that Mark only sold his bar but that he still owned the bilding but even that isn't true. I guess there are 2 Joe Daflo's now. 1 in Ryde and 1 in Newport I think it was but I'm not sure about the second. There was a website about it but it's gone now. | All the current talk (read arguments) on the digest about the current line up and use of the name Level 42, versus the orig line up etc...has made me feel the need to post my own thoughts. When Mark announced at Xmas 2001 that he was buying the rights to the name etc....I was initially excited, which soon turned to suspicion and doubt about what it all really meant, in the grand scheme of things. I think you can look at the whole thing in 2 completely different ways, and i've printed them below. They are both valid and both are worthy of merit. Bare in mind that you can choose to fall into either catagoery, and still be a ' fan ' (whatever that means these days). In truth most folks here will probably recognise something in both. 1. They have sullied the brand name by only having one orig band member, no new material , no apparant record deal or credibility with anyone apart from us here and the 80's revival crowd. Throttling the life out of ' knackered old hits ' that we have heard so many times before it becomes a bit pointless. Level 42 in it's best days (early 80's) might have had Mark as the frontman and voice of the band, but scratch the surface and it was the Goulds that were the real driving force, along with Mike's falsetto and great keys. Let's not forget poor old Wally Badarou, whose contribution was constantly overlooked (still is) and proved that he was massively under-rated. Most of those classic songs from the early days read as... ( Gould/Lindup/Badarou) or variations along that theme. In short, you want the Level 42 line-up remembered as King/Gould/Gould/Lindup/Badarou. That's the group at it's creative and artistic best, the current incarnation, whilst tight, are simply a cover band (albeit good) The magic was there at first but eventually went, and nothing beats the original...right ? There is a certain spirit and magic of a band's original early life that should not be messed with...btw Connah can't hold a candle to Lindup and that's a fact. Would it still be the BEATLES without John, George and Ringo ? or 2. Hang on....we went for 4-5 years (1994 to 1998) with nothing, no gigs, no records (save the odd comp), no visibility, no dvd's, no buzz, no nothing....So what if Mark uses the name again ?, what it does is allow us to go along and seem HIM play again, and maybe the name Level 42 allows him the clout to play bigger tours and more countries. Level 42 is a brand that Mark King's Level 42 wasn't, obviously there is something in a name. We've had intimate raucous gigs at the Jazz Cafe, intimate one off's at Ryde theatre especially in the bar ! , gigs all round the country in fact, not to mention European shows. Mark has not only played the knackered old hits but also asked us what WE wanted him to play, and so we've heard stuff like CANT BLAME LOUIS and SUNBED SONG. Maybe we WILL get a new album with new material one day. Mark will tour that album (does it matter under which name ?), and you get to again see one of the all time great BASS players up close and personal, and a great night out . That won't last forever - he's not getting any younger is he ? We've had dvd's and t-shirts and home made cd's signed by Mark himself, one or two ONE MAN collectibles (that bit is for loz). A lot of people (myself included) have met him on these tours for the first time. There is a great buzz and plenty of debate on this very digest about the stuff i've mentioned above. Look, all i'm trying to say is that I can see it from both sides, and agree with both sides. No one person on this digest is right or wrong. Thanks to free speech we are allowed to debate all of this on the digest, and we are allowed to agree/disagree/be vocal and post a lot/stay quiet and lurk/buy everything the 'band' releases/buy nothing at all/ buy some of it/go to the gigs and enjoy them/don't go out of principal/stand at the gigs/sit in your seat instead/criticise the band/don't critizize them...horses for courses. As we head towards another pointless war it's healthy to debate all this stuff, it's what we gather on the digest for every day, it keeps us sane , takes our mind off things and it's fun. It;s also good to keep it all in context and not take it too seriously really. I guess each and every person here ought to question what Level 42 and it's music really means to them, and what, to them also, is most important in respect of what I've mentioned above. We will all have differing opinions that's for sure, and i'm glad it's that way, there would be no digest if we all agreed all the time. As for me, as I said I can see it from both ways. I feel betrayed, yet hopefull at the same time, sad that phil/boon/mike and wally are not part of it again yet happy that at least Mark is visible again. Mark obviously knows he can't hit the big time again yet he is making a living and enjoying himself - call it semi retirement if you want. I think communication could be better but there you go - if a new album happens it happens and i'll be first in line to buy it, if not well it's been fun..... That's me Dean | ||

In response to Ian's post :
If Mark brought out a book on how to play bass his way (or tell where I
can get it if he has already)
Best wishes, Ian. I'm not aware of a book by Mark. However there are
books by Stuart Clayton called "Bass Transcriptions". Details can be
found
by emailing him at stuartclayton @ hotmail.com.

| There are a number of us going to the Incognito show at the Jazz Cafe on March 25th, so for those folks I wanted to let you know that I booked my flights today. I land at Heathrow at 11AM on the 25th and I leave at 2PM on the 28th. I will be in London from Friday through Sunday afternoon and will head down near Portsmouth to visit some non-Level friends for the remainder of my stay. I wanted to get a headcount - so far there is Dan James and Paul Hammond. I think Bilal might attend now, as I just called him and he wants to come and hang out in London. Eric are you still trying to come? Is there anybody else who lives in England who is going? Hi folks, It’s clear to me and many other individuals that there seems to be many, quite extreme, opinions on the new look Level 42. Yes it may be correct to say that Mark King could be squeezing the last few pounds out of the name Level 42. It may also be true that the band was fuelled by the Gould brothers partnership. Mmm, it could be true that Mark King has lost the direction for new material, but really, who gives a toss?
In general, there have been lots of opinions on one thing or another over the last few months. Some I could be talked into agreeing with, some I think are just a sad excuse to say something controversial outwith their boring, pathetic lifestyles but hey, I’m open for all kinds of opinions. That’s what this Website is all about..right! Level 42 fans sharing their thoughts about their favourite band and discussing the finer points of the band’s astounding career history. I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but that’s exactly the opposite of what’s being discussed on this site. It’s all rather negative don’t you think?
While we’re on the subject of the line up, there would appear to be one major factor in the success of Level 42. It’s not the Gould brothers, but it could be!! It’s not the song-writing capabilities of one Mr Boon Gould, but it could be!! It’s not the Keyboarding skills of Mr Mike Lindup, although I do think he was particularly brilliant in his own right. Could it be perhaps….. Mark King??? I think it just could be, don’t you agree?
In case anybody hasn’t noticed, he’s still touring and TRYING to please the rather impatient fan-base he’s built up over the last twenty odd years. So for Christ sake folks, get off the guy’s back and give him a break eh!
Oh and before anyone immediately starts dissecting this e-mail and replying with their own brand of wit, you know who you are. I didn’t write it to upset anyone, or to have a particular go at anyone. It was just to add a neutral train of thought to it all, honest.
I personally can’t get enough of the band, so there!!!!
Cheers, Davy | ||

Opinions are fine jt but the rubbish you are
sending to the digest at the moment is just irritating and with no substance of
well backed up reasoning.
Maybe your time would be better used studying what
'kiddie pop' really is and getting back to us all in a few months with your
findings.

| I hear a lot of people complaining about the current lineup. I'm also an amateur musician and long time fan, so i also have an opinion ;-). And yes, I also like the earlier work, but still think the later albums have a place. I do hope MK realises that the "new" Level 42 will be at its best when releasing new material geared more at the funk/fusion fans than mainstream pop. They will have a hell of a time trying to stand out form the rest of the pop crowd. I also was almost in tears when I saw L42 in december last year in the Netherlands (brought back so many good memories!), they sounded energetic and tight enough to me, and the arrangements and sound were fantastic, not worse from what I heard than in say '89 or '91. So Mark, if you are reading this ;-) I would rather see you guys with new fresh and specialized material, playing at jazz festivals then watered down pop songs. Greeting to you all, Patrick. | ||
