1 - Forever Now Resurgence Version
From: Laurence Green <laurence.green @ scottwilson.com>

The resurgence version is the album how the band wanted it to be released (in the main). I say 'in the main' because they took the opportunity to add some tracks that were being held back for B-sides (Time Will Heal). Tired Of Waiting was left off because when they were deciding what was going on there it was still probably scheduled for release as a single - it's a shame, as there are two cracking unreleased finished version of Tired Of Waiting - both with different lyrics that would have sat nicely on the RES version instead of, say, Forever Now.

The opposite of what was said yesterday is true. RCA changed the version of Billy's Gone for their release of the album, the original (ish) is on the RES version. Love In A Peaceful World is about 1 minute shorter on the RES version and One In A Million is also a minute different. If I look for the what I think are the weakest tracks on the RCA version, I'm drawn to Forever Now and All Over You, which, ironically were singles. They certainly don't spoil a classic album but there are better tracks which could have been put there. All in all I prefer the Resurgence version, but, let's be honest here, more and more these days, when I listen to the RCA version, I'm mainly waiting for One In A Million to come round, which is surely the highlight of the album. On the resurgence version there's too much quality, and no track really stands out from the others. Phil dragged Mark and Mike kicking a screaming out of the rut and they produced a classic. The roles were reversed at Trigonstock, where apparently Phil and Boon could not believe how good Mike had become on keys.

This is more like it folks - a good honest debate. I'm glad I brought this
up now.

>No, I wasn't. I hate being obliged to stand up, and I hate being told how
I
>should enjoy a concert, be it peer pressure from fellow audience members
to
>stand up or the band cajoling me to clap or sing along (to this day the
name
>George Benson brings me out in a cold sweat - but that's another story).
>Just personal preferences, but you did ask.

AG, I'm not telling you how to enjoy a concert, and i'm certainly not
telling you to clap and sing along - I too hate the whole "I'll sing a bit
and then you sing a bit" that lead singers sometimes attempt. You're
right, it is just personal preference. As you said, many folk at Reading
wouldn't have known a lot of the tracks - so yeah, if Mark wanted a DVD
with a more enthusiastic crowd then he should've chosen a more "Level Best"
friendly setlist. But I think Humph is also right - I'll bet there are
plenty of folk who are too scared to stand up whilst everyone around them
sits. And if you go to a George Benson concert then you get all you
deserve...

>I second those preferences, and frankly never
>understood the whole getting up thing.

Well guess what...?

>I would be very surprised if MK gave
>too much of a hell about seeing a sea of people
>bouncing around before him

I would seriously beg to differ. I'll bet Mark would rather see people
stand and clap than sit and gently tap their finger on their knee. His
comments towards the end of the DVD seem to confim this. Let's get this
straight; when I talk about standing at a gig I'm not talking about a
moshpit - Level 42 aren't the sort of band you can crowd surf to - and I'm
not talking about dancing like a madman either. I just feel totally
trapped when I'm sat down and there's a good funky beat being blasted at me
- it's a natural reaction to stand up and move with it. The best L42 gigs
I've attended are at places like Bournemouth and Exeter - small venues, no
seats, everyone feeling the beat and having a good time.

>Clearly some people go to concerts, these are the
>people that apparently do not give a fig about what
>the set list is, for "more" than just the music. This
>is, aparently (oddly), as much a social event as it is
>a concert.

I love going to gigs. Some people like cars, some like computer games,
some even like model trains, but I like to go see bands I may not even
know, based on word of mouth from friends, music mags, radio play etc.
Granted, some are poor, but I've discovered many great bands and different
types of music in this way. How on earth do you think I discovered L42?
And if a concert isn't a social event, then what the hell is it?

>If one is to attend a concert and fels that they can not do
>something (in this case stand) without the approval of
>others, they must have a real hard time with reality.

Oh please...

>How tall are you?

I know where you're going with this. If I'm a tall bloke and I stand then
people behind me can't see cos they're short etc etc. Sorry to
dissappoint, but I'm a short-arse: 5'9" - it's not difficult to see over my
head. Humph has mentioned that Mark prefers standing venues, so let's hope
he chooses venues where people can stand if they want while also offering
seats at the back or a balcony for those who like to sit. Fair?

Steve

>>I was at the Reading gig and I saw a couple of people who were up dancing
>>being told by an usher to sit down or leave!!!??? Another little niggle -
>>why is it only available on DVD? I'm a techno-phobe and only have a video.
>>Very unfair of the powers that be to decide we all have DVD players!
I would have thought that it would have been far costlier for MK to have to
produce and mail out heavy brick-like vhs tapes, which BTW is a fast dying
format anyway. Who wants crappy VHS when you can have it on digital media.

>>The sound quality in the venue was absolute cr*p - could barely hear
Mark's bass cut thro' the mix at all most of the >>time.
Yes, go back and listen to early Level 42 gigs from 1983/84 and the bass is
very throaty and at the front of the mix, the way it should be.
>> therefore is making sure most of the 2003 tour will be standing
Gulp ! - It's looking more and more like another Greatest Hits tour isn't it
?

>>When the hell are we going to get some NEW material from Mark King, call
me Level 42 now.? Mark, if you >>haven't retired yet - MAN, what is
taking so long?
Yes, even a mere word from the great man about this would be a start - at
the moment the silence is deafening.
>>"Are you retired, semi-retired, or is the fun ride over?" Give us some
sort of clue, please, do we have something to >>look forward to, or do we
just need to accept what we have received being thankful of course and move
on?
Well said Mikey ! - Time was we received regular updates every couple of
months - now we've been well over a year without anything of any
consequence. Is it too much to ask to say a couple of lines of " we hope to
do this soon..., or we are working towards this.... "
We haven't really had any new material since One Man - and that was 5 years
ago.

Being older than most of you, I often book tickets at a venue where I
can get a seat. Although I love the band because they play dance music,
I like to sit and let the music flood over me. I'm usually in tears
anyway. In the old days, I used to dance and not bother to watch. It's
gone a bit the other way now. If I buy a seat, it means I want to sit
down.

If I book a ticket at a standing gig, I know what to expect. I don't
stand up when the LSO come on stage at the Albert Hall. There again,
they don't do many stand up gigs. If you wanna stand, get a ticket at a
standing gig. I know there are one or two who go to every gig but I'm
afraid I dont need that sort of fix.

There IS a second, remastered Japanese version of Forever Now - I have it. The cat. number is different, as is the sash - apparently it says it's remastered, but it's in Japanese. (I have the original Japanese FN as well - and a FN CD from Mexico). Level Best was also recently reissue remastered in Japan (I have that - and the original Japanese). Early Tapes was reissue last year in the UK with a new artwork disc and remastered, I got that too.

Well, Lo...all i can say is that i have a very dear friend who used to live in Jakarta, Indo, and when she found out I was into L42 she almost freaked!!  She then went on a very long rant about how popular L42 was in Indonesia back in the day (she refers to THEN, since it's been a few years since she lived there, although she visits frequently).  She went on and on about how her and her friends were ALL into L42.  So, I don't technically know the answer to your arguments, however, I would say based on her comments that there is / was quite a large following there, at least at one time or another.

Hey Julie,

Seems like you're over here in the States, based on your comment regarding the N.O. Jazz Fest.  I have been getting quite a number of the requests from folks here in the U.S. to get copies, however, I don't think I've received any forwarded emails from the D&V email account as I've been getting for all the others.

Anyhow, water....bridge....send me a direct email and I'll hook you up!!

Being a travel agent, I received fare and package notices for the Summer 2003 today.  There is a major SALE on (USA to EUROPE), including the UK, starting today, lasting until, well who knows.  Fares have dropped significantly for Europe mainly due to the threat of war and lack of travel to Europe, mainly France and Germany.  If anybody would like to me to check out some fares, (no cost for digesters of course, I waive my commission) for L42 UK summer dates or even Indonesia - I would be happy to find you something you can afford!

In Tolkien's now overly popular Lord of the Rings trilogy we find that Level
42 transcends all.

BTW, I'm talking about the book not the movie.

In The Two Towers during the battle at Helm's Deep, Gimli and Legolas are
keeping a running total of their kills.

In the end, Gimli has a grand total of 42. Obviously Tolkien was a Level
42 fan. Either that or Gimli was.

My choice would be L42 STU !!!

According to DVLC that number isn't registered to a vehicle so I may make
enquiries regarding the purchase of it - bet it'll be expensive though !!

I am getting ready to enjoy seeing "Average White Band" playing here in Los
Angeles on Thursday! Remember them? "Catch Me Before I have to Testify" and
"Give it Up For Love"??? BRIT FUNK THAT PRE-DATES LEVEL 42!!! Actually, AWB
are one of the few bands comprable to Level 42...at least EARLY level 42 in
terms of jazz/funk.

I remember seeing Level 42 in Toronto in 1987. This year was good for
them...they really did reach a wider audience with their commercial success
(*sellouts*!) of the time. The auditorium was huge, the show was sold out,
and yet most people around me had no idea what a song was if it WASN'T on
Running In The Family....I kept hearing whispers of "I don't know this
one..." when a non RITF was played (and they only played a few) and constant
cries of "Play LESSONS!!!!"

Hallo all,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mikes e Mail and he raised some very good points.  I have to say that I wasn't aware how many of you in USA travelled back to UK to see gigs ....you guys are 'true fans'

On the subject he raised on new material...yes it is wait and see but it will be interesting to see what 'style' will come out in other words will he go back to basics or will we be entertained with music sounding like the latter offerings?

I have had a wry smile at the debate is to whether it should be done 'standing up' or 'sitting down'...watching Level 42 that is!  I have been lucky enough to have been to 4 of their gigs where 2 of them were sitting down and 2 of them were standing up.  In my opinion standing up is better there's nothing that beats a dancing to a Level 42 tune.

Stephen.I went to the Wolverhamton concert and as soon as Level 42 came on i
stood up and this made everyone eles stand up too. By doing this everyone
had a great time.Even Mark said that we were probably the best crowd on the
tour.
The remark Mark made on the dvd made my laugh and yes it does spoil the dvd
with eveybody sitting down.
