| >>Does anyone know what gig the Almost There cd actually contains? Surely >>it's a bootleg of a gig already in circulation amongst fans, or am I wrong? >>£31. Some people... I can Guarantee (sorry, no pun intended) that this cd is one of the most pointless things ever to appear on Ebay under the name of Level 42. It is a very crude and very home-made cd-r of the WHITE FUNKY concert (bad enough sound quality in itself), with a couple of other live tracks from a different gig thrown on the end. Pah ! - terrible that someone can churn these out and hope to make some very illegal money on Ebay. Even worse is that folks are tripping over themselves to bid on it. Dean | ||

I'm absolutely stunned that someone is willing to pay £31 so
far - and
there's still 7 days of the auction to go. I've got a fairly respectable collection of L42 material, but I draw the line at obtaining every available bootleg of live material - of course there's the mandatory White Funky and the '81 live gig that surfaced a couple of years back, but how many can you own before you get bored? Does anyone know what gig the Almost There cd actually contains? Surely it's a bootleg of a gig already in circulation amongst fans, or am I wrong? £31. Some people... [Willem] That's what i was
thinking ! that's a lot of money. Somehow the title does ring me a bell,
therefore i think its a boot thats allready floating for some
years.
As of the White
Funky; i have that one myself and am wondering how much would that be worth
?

| This original e-mail digest is so much better than the web version it's untrue. On here you have mainly the more cerebral and intelligent postings, which I had really missed after it dissapeared. Thank heavens that folks like AG and Loz are back in the fold - to inform me and to make me laugh too. I tried to like the Web digest, but just didn't have time to plough through the reams of nonsense. By the way - did anyone hear the Level 42 reference on NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS the other night ? | <I can't understand the number of you that seem to dislike The Chant. Ok so it may not be as imaginative as other 42 material, even on the album, but it's not really a dance tune and no one's relationship has crumbled. It's a hardcore funkout with great jazzy elements. Isn't that what you all want? It seems those who dislike SATS & G, also dislike this tune. I don't get it. What is it you really want from this band?> I would hardly call The Chant Has Begun a funk tune. True Believers, Kansas City Milkman, World Machine [the song] - those are funky tunes. I think what turns people off [including me] is the heavily synthesized sound combined with the lyrics. What I want from the band is to produce high quality songs that other artists can't hold a candle to. Most of the time Level 42 has done that admirably, and sometimes they have not [Time Will Heal? Two Hearts Collide? I rest my case.]. I feel, as others have stated, that I have the right to say something when I feel they haven't , but that doesn't negate my feelings about the other tunes that I love. The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. If we didn't care, we wouldn't be having these conversations in the first place... | Can someone explain what this "compilation" version of Guaranteed is that just appeared for sale on Ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2505186551&category=1057 It appears to be Guaranteed, plus a good chunk of Forever Now interspersed, for a total of 16 confusingly assembled tracks. What the....??!!! cheers, Eric | ||

| > rather than > blindly loyal, nice terminology, deafly too, of course. > Forever Now FINNALLY paid me > what I was owed as a fan of Level 42. Well this starts a whole new thing, but I am curious to the real feeling of satisfaction w/ FNow. To me it is , while a tad bit better than SatSun and a Guara, it is notmuch better and I sometimes wonder if Phil's name was not listed on the credits (although clearly the playing is more Phil-esque) would this album be as highly thought of... > I gave Mark King the MONEY to buy his > home studio, and I expect > him to use it wisely. Well, he gave it to his parents, but I'm sure they (the parents) are working on a killer album... > Yeah, I have the right to bitch about the > products, and to hell with > their feelings if they read this. I see it slightly different, I would prefer the guys to read my/our comments and, well, the ones that are well written, give them some thought. I think it is terribly important that MK knows that some fans finding it insulting that the set list doesn't change. Among other things. But unfortuanly, as with everything, the majority is not always on top of their game, so MK thinks that 'we' can not live without SAYou, CWay and other stuff that needs a rest, if not retirement. (This is not just a comment on the last tour, yes it was a 'greatest hits', but that does not mean the set list can't have a few interchangables.) > greatest evidence that Level 42 HAD to have the > Gould Brothers (note the R. > Gould and P. Gould on the writing credits). While I am continually (and annoyingly) refered to someone 'living in the past' (which just goes to show how little people can read things), and as much as I think the only good-to-great L42 albums are with the original members, I do NOT think they (the Goulds) were manditory. All it would have taken (or would take, if you prefer present/future tense (of which I have (pretty much) no hope for) is to just concentrate on making good music. Music. NOT aspiring for pop success. > Well I would JT, but I'm not sure the Level 42 Front > of Judaea can cope > with the affront to their belief system. True true, and all too scary of linking it with (a) religion. >I'm thinking of giving up liking my > own music and checking if AG likes it first before > then proceeding forward to listen to something. Not a bad idea, but sometimes he takes it a bit further...after awhile he started informing me that he should also "test out" any girls I want to date... > Next, regarding all the recent bashings of the > GUARANTEED and SATS albums.... I didn't find many > of the stated criticisms to be constructive in > nature, so much as self-fellating mockery. While I and and others here are hardly trying to write thesis-like reviews I think there is far more 'construction' (not to mention foundation) than the usual, "I love them" "they have no bad music" "I will follow them forever" nonsense. >Now > go put on your parachute pants, AG has all mine. >l42s name > came from the hitchikers guide to the galaxy{a Great > book, ask zaphod} This is one of the theories. Another is that when a few of them went to NY, they arrived at 42nd street and thought "this is our level". Either way, "great" is _highly_ over-praising HGttGalaxy. >Question - if you never bought either of > these albums, would you download them today for > free? Maybe, but that doesn't make them any better. Money has little to do with it, so if said material was downloaded, upon listening I would then rush for the delete button hoping to not have scared my harddrive. >P.S. The Big Lebowski is > the funniest film ever made. Well, we all know that that rug _really_ tied the room together! __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! | Dear All Well done whoever it was last week who raised the issue of which album makes Mark King's Arse look biggest. I have to nominate your old favourite .......................................................Guaranteed ! It had to be, didnt it? Perhaps some of you will agree or disagree with my theory. Although you can't actually see much of the arse itself, I would like to propose that that big old Penzoil leather jacket could hide a pair of huge buttocks. Also, presumably, the arse is getting larger with the (back?) passage of time, and has not yet reached it's zenith, or yet starting to shrink through old age. Mine's still growing and I'm much older than he is. And as Guaranteed is the last album, there has been the maximum time for nature and good nourishment to do their work. Anyone any others ideas? | >10 - AG The Expert >From: Pete Willis < >peteburywillis @ hotmail.com> > >I'm thinking of giving up liking my own music and checking if AG likes it >first before then proceeding forward to listen to something. At last, complete obeisance begins. Now the sweet realisation of the mental turmoil you will all be spared by having to make your own tawdry selections will start to spread, and my destiny as the Digest’s own Kim Il Sung will come to pass. Come on Pete, I’m as entitled to my opinion as the next man. If I state it more forcefully than others, it’s because I take pleasure in the wealth of invective the English language provides for such a purpose. I tend not to append my proclamations with ‘of course, that’s just my opinion’ because, surely, it goes without saying? If I thought anybody actually took heed of any of this ranting I’d give it up tomorrow. That said, Status Quo haven’t made a good record since about 1975 and Jools Holland is an abomination who should never be allowed to despoil a piano again but, you know, each to his own. >The man is an authority of what is good and what isn't and it seems the >best way forward. Even though you jest, I will nevertheless point you all towards Dave O’Higgins Fast Foot Shuffle. It’s undeniably jazz, but funky jazz made for dancing. It sounds like an album the Brand New Heavies might have made if they could really play (obviously they could play, I mean REALLY play.) I can probably send mp3s of a track or two to anyone who thinks it might be to their taste, if mp3s can be zipped up (I wouldn’t know). >13 - the 51st state >From: Tom Foolery < >grooveyardtom @ yahoo.com> > >So - I see Tony Blair carries with him a big book as >he sits and stands and sits - what is that? Advance copy of the new Harry Potter. >Are the questions he receives known to him in advance? Is he >cribbing? Yes, and yes. Prime Minister’s Questions is a good idea which has become a farce, frankly. Then again, British politics in its entirety has disenfranchised so many people in the last decade – actually I’ll stop there, because many of us will remember that nothing renders the Digest unreadable more quickly than religion or politics. Don’t mention the war! I did it once, but I think I got away with AG PS For those of you expecting me to deride someone for liking Nik Kershaw, I can still proudly name all six members of Haircut 100, so that first stone will remain tightly in my hand. _________________________________________________________________ Worried what your kids see online?
