Has anyone else noticed the ridiculous prices that people are bidding on
Ebay for the TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN cd single.??
I've just noticed one go for £40.99 !!! , yes it's rare, but not that rare.
There has been at least 3 or 4 copies of it on Ebay over the last week or 2,
which surely means it will come up again, so why pay silly money. Ebay never
ceases to amaze me, I even hear that people in the U.S are trying to sell
bits of the ill-fated Space Shuttle on there !!

Dean

p.s I've got a rare copy of Running In The Family for sale, ultra rare, hard
to find, never been seen by anyone before or since, in fact never even made
that's how rare it is,
but it's yours for £60.00 plus shipping. !!

For goodness sake, can somebody write about Annie, Glasgow, her shop in
Sauchial Street, The Gorbals. whoever knows!

I liked Pete Willis run down of Guaranteed,

However, Her Big Day, Plodding!! I think not Mr Willis. As I've said
before, classic Ray Davies Stuff here. A little cockney Sparra' told me
Chas and Dave have already asked to cover it. This will be the only
Level 42 Song sung round a piano in the East End in years to come.

My Father's Shoes. Another nice observation song. Mark's reflections on
selling out!!!!!! Nice video too if I remember
correctly.

10. If You Were Mine. Brilliant song written by Gary Husband. The
Wembley Live version is better, how he gets round all those toms in the
space of one bar, I'll never know. It's far too complicated for a
single. OK I know.......... Bohemian Rhapsody ......but this wouldn't
have got the airplay.

11. Lasso The Moon Superb atmospheric song sung brilliantly by Mike,
his voice is just made for this song. Didn't he write it?

Lets face it, the interest of this digest is our descenting views.

I agree with all your comments, and liked your break down of the songs.  I think you have touched an important point with the mix of the album.  It is pretty poor, I think it sounds too 80's, and too clean.  It was recorded at Marks' I believe on 2 Studer 24 track open reel machines, and then through an SSL console with all the usual stuff.  However, I think it was then mixed down my Lord Alge prior to mastering.  If you listen to stuff like Trash, which I think was recorded on the same kit, the sound is quite different - which I believe is all down to the mixing and mastering, trash is very raw but I like that.

I actually like Guaranteed, although granted it doen'st have the same kudos as those early albums - but then, how does anyone top those acheivements, they were the cutting edge of british funk!  And with only half the original band, it was sure to not sound the same.  Jakko didn't play on any of the album tracks either, only the B-sides.

The songs on Guaranteed on the whole are quite nice, and I think the Holdsworth stuff is truly beautiful and for me is its saving grace.  I've heard much worse albums by much bigger artists, and I certainly couldn't even hope to match the writing skills of one of those songs (excluding the ape) ;) .  As a L42 album I would rate it below the pre '85 stuff creatively, but song wise it's up there with the rest.  Just like SATS the mixing was rubbish.  Stuff does age quite quickly these days, and listening to that with todays ear, I find that album sonically grating.

Best regards

Dave Jacobs

I feel like I should disguise my voice, send this email from an anonymous
account, or sit back in the shadows when I say that I like “The Ape”. I
like it for the same reasons I like “Coup D’Etat”. It’s a bass/drums
groove. The subject matter is a little dark, and not the typical “Oh Baby I
Love You” vein. I don’t know if they ever played it live, but I’ll bet it
would have sounded great in a smaller club, maybe with some extended blowing
thrown in.

There's an advertisement by Del Taco in which this geek is going around on a
Del Taco Tour to pitch the restaurant. At any rate he says "I'm on Day 42 in
San Diego......"

Do you think the ad execs for Del Taco are Level 42 fans????????

Hi All !

Last thing I heard about Annie was that she had opened an Art studio (Art as
in Pictures and Watercolours) in Edinburgh !

Good to see the old names back on the list !

Pete , here are my responses:

1. Guaranteed.
Lets rehash Lessons In Love for single power. A Failure, although I like the
remix

2. Overtime
I like this one too. It's a bit depressing, but musically good and lyrically
acceptible

3. Her Big Day.
My favorite from this one. Lumbering, yes, but funny and funky

4. Seven Years
I like it too...not funky, but still good. Depressing.

5 . Set Me Up
Mike cannot sound tough no matter how hard he tries. A good funky sound, but
a bit lame.

6. The Ape
I actually don't mind this one. Interesting bassline. I think this song gets
a bad rap. It DOES sound like a b-side..but some of Level's best is b-side
stuff.

7. My Father's Shoes
Musically interesting. A coherent song, depressing.

8. A Kinder Eye
I can't stand this one. Musically akward and lyrically
terrible...sappy..."not as we are, but as we dream"..get the bucket, I am
going to puke. Also depressing.

9. She Can't Help Herself.
Poorly placed behind another slow tune, funk feels long gone. Melodramatic
and depressing.

10. If You Were Mine.
Gary Husband wrote this one...it's a little conventional, but it has enough
intersting elements to keep me from skipping it when it comes on.

11. Lasso The Moon
Another Linup tune about exotic lands and women who seek escape and romance
from the duldrums of a fantasy village. If you like Kyote and
The Spirit Is Free and his lines from All She Wants, you will like this.
Personally, it belongs on "Changes".

12. With A Little Love
I like this one..neat little melody, but one of Levels uneducated liberalism
moments like The Chant and Freedom Someday. Hardly political writing...more
like a folk tune if it were not for the jazz.

Overall, this album is rather depressing and the sequence slows to a near
stop in the middle. There are definately good things about it..but let's
face it...no Gould brothers, and that makes all the differance.

Hi Folks,

Just a short note to inform Brian and Ben about the fantastic Annie McCaig. I went to the Glasgow Pavillion gig in November 2002. Half way through the gig Mark says that the next song is dedicated to Annie McCaig. He then asks if Annie is in! To my complete astonishment she was sitting directly behind me the whole time, I couldn’t believe it. She hasn’t changed at all though, and it was good that she came out to see the guy’s in concert, I thought. As for the recording side of things, I have no idea what she’s up to these days. Just thought I’d let you guys know.

Cheers,

Davy

am one of those silent members who enjoys his daily readings of the level 42 digest.  i've been doing it for years and i think it's awesome that level 42 still have all of you.

i am the lead singer of interCHEMISTRY, a band based in columbus ohio usa.  i am originally from buckinghamshire england and i have lived here for 5 years.
my band is about to make big waves over here in the states with our second album coming out later in the year and i thought i would let you guys know about it, as level 42 was and is one of the biggest influences on our music and i thought some of you might be interested in what we do.
like most of you, i am a huge fan of the original level 42 line up and the early 80's albums, and our music reflects that, but i would also say that although i prefer the older stuff, i still adore the later efforts and i would still say it's better music that most of the crap that's out there!

anyway, please try this link to a site where you can hear clips from our current album and even buy it if you like what you hear.

if any of you like what you hear, or not, let me know about it, please.

a lifelong avid fan of one of the best bands there ever was.....(and is, as i think that the newest line up actually reminds me of the original early 80's days with a more stripped back funk about it all).
