| >1. The Conversation >From: hugs and kisses < >level42love @ yahoo.com> > >What is the new Mike Lindup album like? Relaxing. Oh dear. That sounds uninspiring. >Strange. When was the last time anyone of you bought an all-piano album? Given that the piano is the only instrument really worth listening to – all the time! Five piano only albums worth the attention of any jazz fan: Geoffrey Keezer – Sublime. Actually an album of (apart from a couple of solos) duets with pianists Kenny Barron, Benny Green, Chick Corea and the wonderful Mulgrew Miller. Keezer is the most versatile pianist I’ve ever heard, capable of awesome power yet elegant subtlety. And he looks like a bit of a nerd, which really endears him to me. Michel Petrucciani – Solo Live. I won’t bore our less attentive readers with exactly why Petrucciani was so extraordinary (look him up if you’re interested), because probably his most amazing attribute was just his joyful, exuberant playing. Plus he was that rare beast, a jazz pianist who plays to just entertain his audience rather than impress or overwhelm them. There are better Petrucciani albums but this is probably the pick of the solo ones. Keith Jarrett – Paris Concert. Jazz purists (you think Level 42 has purist fans, try being a musically uneducated jazz fan) would always go with the Koln Concert. But I love the Paris album for the two short tracks, the straighforward blues and his reading of The Wind, a piece of playing of such aching beauty it still sends shivers down me a decade or so on. Dave McKenna – Left Handed Compliment. McKenna is renowned as having one of the most powerful and reliable left hands in the business. To hear him soloing with the right while pounding a speeding walking bassline with the left is to hear a man in command of his instrument. Harry Connick Jr – Harry Connick Jr. Forget all the dodgy films, the Christmas albums, the Sinatra hype, most of all ignore all the sneering demagogues – Connick can really play. If you don’t believe me, listen to his beautiful rendition of On Green Dolphin Street from this album. >Excellent. Who knew that latin jazz and classical could be crammed into one >person? Eliane Elias. Michel Camilo. In fact if you try Camilo’s concerto you’ll find latin jazz and classical crammed into one piece of music.
