Fans of Incognito may be interested to learn that Maysa Leak performs the
vocals on ‘Summertime’ from Jason Rebello’s stupendous album ‘Keeping Time’.
Then again they may not.

4.  People Need Funk free CD offer
From: Andrew Goodwin <nightfly83 @ hotmail.com>

Some time ago it came to my attention that people at my workplace were
listening to the most appalling range of dispiriting rock music, from the
wildly overrated White Stripes to the perennially narcolepsy inducing REM.
As a result I devised a compilation entitled People Need Funk. The idea was
to try and open some of these ears to the fact that there is more to life
than straight minor chords and bass guitars played with a plectrum. The
track listing was as follows:

Level 42 – Heathrow
Blueboy – Remember Me
Courtney Pine/Lynden David Hall – Lady Day (& John Coltrane)
Yellowjackets (featuring Take 6) – Revelation
Raw Stylus – 37 Hours (In The USA)
Hue & Cry – I Didn't Know
Claire Martin – Black Coffee
Steely Dan – I Got The News
Stevie Wonder – Please Don't Go
Tom Browne – Funkin' For Jamaica
Harry Connick Jr. – Hear Me In The Harmony
Dave O'Higgins – Chair Dance
Donald Fagen – Confide In Me
David Arnold/Propellerheads – Backseat Driver
James Taylor Quartet – Theme From Starsky & Hutch
Bentley Rhythm Ace – Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out

Obviously the cognoscenti (or those obsessed with precise labelling) will
notice immediately that many of these tracks roam beyond what a friend
charmingly termed the Visible Funk Horizon. Nevertheless they all fall
within the remit of being music with a damn sight more to offer than that
which you’ll find on your nearest pub juke box or homogenised local
commercial radio station. I had a broad audience of people to aim for, many
of whom looked at the tracklist and had only heard of Stevie Wonder (no
really).

Anyway, I can burn a handful of these for anyone interested in a copy. I’m
sure I’ll be breaking a hundred different copyright laws, but so long as the
12 of you who still read the Digest don’t tell David Loundy I’m willing to
risk it. Unfortunately due to my precarious pecuniary position this offer is
only open to UK residents, unless you are particularly persuasive. Requests
to my e-mail rather than the Digest of course, and first come first serve.

AG

PS The follow-up CD was called People Need Jazz, designed to further the
initiation via introduction to an instrument known as the “piano”. Alas, I
had only two takers.
