Normally I would totally agree, but when someone is just running through the same tunes, essentially note for note, for less than 8% of the year I can't imagine this is one of those music for music's sake, creative for creativity's sake, et (or "soothing the inner beast") things. As I've said elsewhere, even his solos, when he takes them, show little to no creativity, 'look ma, I'm playing a few bars of "mr. pink" without the band!". > Catharsis in action. Bunch of stuff to
write about today!
welcomes
First off, welcome
back Takeo! That's a blast from the past, for sure.
It does seem
like "they're
all crawling out of the woodwork" these days...
Whatever became of
Pat Flanagan? I correspond with him every so (long) often,
but
I think he's just
lost interest. Lump him in with past alums like Tucker Haas, Dan
Lloyd,
Elson Trinidad,
Vince Mora, and Laz Nibble.
Digest
vibe
Mikey also wrote
about the passing of the golden age of the Digest. A growing
sentiment seems to
be that things aren't like they used to be. More
"bickering",
less agreement, not
much to discuss, etc. Sounds like "community marriage."
Everyone has a
theory on this, so of course I have to offer not one but
three
(keeping consistent
with Mike's typical posts ;)
a) First theory is
that this is just the maturing of the Internet - i.e., people getting used
to the
technology.
Certainly people
are more
comfortable with email now than they were in 1997. In
1997 (which I
pick as an
arbitrary benchmark), most folks were just getting
their
first AOL
accounts,
emailing their friends about the weather, and figuring
out for the first
time what an "email digest list" was all about. I liken it to having
just gotten your
driver's license when you're both thrilled and apprehensive to
be
behind the
wheel. A few years later (again with the driver's license), you're
king
of the road, you go
where you damn well please, and when someone cuts you
off,
its F*-YOU,
<HONK>, flip the bird, etc.... (even if you were the one at
fault!)
Ok, maybe my example
is a bit extreme, but the point is that it takes time for
people to adapt to
new technology. During this phase, behavior is shaped
by
inexperience,
apprehension, and the tendency to not want to rock the boat.
So
"these days" on the
Digest, I think people are more likely to show their
previously-suppressed criticism about anything/everything because they
are
comfortable
with the medium.
b) Another theory
might be that these are just different times. Economy, war,
SARS,
etc.
Plenty for
people to be on edge about. Add to that some controversey
about
Gary Husband and you
have a formula for outright antisocial behavior (sorry AG,
behaviour.)
c) "The natives are
restless". Not much new in Level 42 land lately?
While this is
debatable, there is definitely reserved optimisim that MK will
release
some new
material. But until that happens, on the Digest, we're left to
cannibalize
old discussion
topics in hopes of finding some unexplored areas (which, as
Loz
pointed out the
other day, are few and far between...)
d) I know I
said three, but the fourth (and probable) explanation is that its
a
combination
of many
factors, including 1-3, above.
other
bands
Eric Johnson asked
about other bands... always of my favorite
Level 42 topics. :)
Over the years, I
think there have been a number of other bands/musicians that we
have
compared & discussed favorably on the Digest. A few of those
include
Incognito,
Jamiroquai,
Steely Dan
and Nik Kershaw. I myself was turned on to Incognito
purely
out of
recommendations made on the Digest. All told, I probably
communicate
(individually)
with Digest
members more frequently about other bands than I do
about
Level 42!
Go
figure. By the way, I really liked Eric Johnson's first album.
:)
Gavin &
Iggy
Alex mentioned that
Gavin Harrison had been written up in Modern Drummer, and
that he had played
with Iggy Pop. Wow. That's a good one for a Level
42
"six degrees"
quiz... :)

| Eric johnson wrote: "...bands such as Steely Dan, Yes, Pat Metheny Group, etc. What do you guys think are the most popular 'other bands' we listen to? i would guess they AREN'T bands such as The Grateful Dead etc..." Excellent choices, Eric! As far as my other favorites, when I heard Pat Metheny for the first time, I never looked back. Pat has become the single most influential musician in my life by far. Second place isn't even close. Level 42 has always been a favorite pop act, but in terms of what music is really about - Metheny (either solo or with Pat Metheny Group) is what it is all about. I saw him for the first time live with the PMG in Feb 1998 and it literally changed my expectations of what a live performance should be. I saw him twice at the beginning of last year and he lived up to every minute of those expectations and then some. I HIGHLY recommend him in a group setting live for everyone reading this post. Steely Dan is another excellent band that covers a lot of ground musically and makes it all work extremely well. A definite favorite. Other favorites: Al Di Meola, Toto (yes, I said Toto - especially since the addition of Simon Phillips on Drums), Tears for Fears (from Sowing the Seeds to present) and Dave Matthews Band. Speaking of DMB, they segue nicely into your point about the Grateful Dead. They have been compared to the Dead for their jamming primarily and the fact that they had a serious grass roots following long before they were signed. But in my opinion, NO band in the world EVER needs two drummers. (I'm a drummer and I see no use for it at all.) The main difference for me is that the Dead and their followers are primarily washed up drug addicts who bathe on a rare occasion and the a large number of the women couldn't identify a razor with a gun to their head. They are everything I disagree with in life on just about every aspect - with the exception of the importance of music. The Dead are probably one of the most overrated groups in the history of music. They have done absolutely NOTHING relevant. Ever. | ||

I know, I know, I should proof read. Leaving out a negation does tend to change the thought, n'est pas? Here's what I meant to submit yesterday: *********** As for Mark's motives for gigging, I'd say his reasons are exactly the same as mine: to make some money, which helps when you have pastimes such as eating and clothing children, and, more importantly from the point of view of a performer, to _perform_! Being on stage in front of an appreciative audience is something for which there is no substitute. All that other stuff about milking the 1980s or the name Level 42 is valid to a point, but it will take some major persuasion to convince me that it's anything OTHER THAN the irreplaceable rush of playing live music that's his prime motivator. That's why people--and I mean real musicians, not pop shiesters--go into music: it's fun to play! You don't become a musician to make vast amounts of money. Okay, so maybe you might feel that way at first, but it doesn't take long to realize that it's pretty unlikely that mega-fame and fortune will come your way. People play music to sooth the inner beast. People play music to communicate in a way that words just can't replace. People play music to take their pent-up emotion and display it to the world in a way that lets other people, on a really low-level animalistic way, release _their_ inner turmoil. Catharsis in action. Rebuttals welcome. ...Alex...

Also, today I was listening to Louis Armstrong's greatest hits. There are many others, as I have widely ecclectic tastes. Z.
