'' Just got home from the airport. Lo is right--it was the best yet, and
not just ....

I can't get away from it can I. The Steely Dan digest is full of superlatives
that focus my mind on what nearly was. The late cancellation of our proposed
trip to Boston to co-incide with the Steely Dan's concert, and I've missed
them again !

I should have contacted Lolita in the first place. She was responsible for
a very timely reservation for Incognito's run at the Jazz Cafe a few months
ago. She is ALWAYS in the right place.

We're in Golden for a week, commencing 11th October, I don't suppose Lo
could get Steely Dan to divert ?

Will Steely Dan Make It a Grammy Repeat?
Two-and-a-half years ago, the iconic jazz-rock combo called Steely Dan won the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year with "Two Against Nature." It was their first and only Grammy in their 30-year career, and, though they are known as cynics who mocked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for years, they accepted their statues with a certain ironic grace.

Now, the question is, to paraphrase their first hit, can they do it again?
Steely Dan -- which is really Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and a supporting cast of top-notch musicians -- played two of the best shows I've ever seen this past weekend at New York's Roseland Ballroom.

The Saturday night show was so good that Becker, not a man of many words, actually exclaimed from the stage that perhaps it was his all-time favorite. When the capacity audience of 3,000-plus, jammed like upright sardines from the lip of the stage to all corners of the cavernous, historic, seedy dance hall, started singing the words to the obscure Dan song, "Don't Take Me Alive," Fagen -- also not one to show tremendous emotion -- seemed genuinely shocked and bowled over.

With all this going for them, then, is it possible to win another Grammy -- or even be nominated for one?
Their new album, "Everything Must Go," was released in June by Warner Bros. to mostly excellent reviews. The album should be up for Best Album. The title track qualifies for Best Performance by a Duo, Group or whatever.

With its intricate jazz composition, winning melodic lines and trenchant lyrics about corporate greed, "Everything Must Go" is already the song of the year. In a perfect world, which would exclude illiterate rappers and lip-synching teenagers, Steely Dan would be vying for Grammys with Macy Gray, the late Warren Zevon, the Pretenders, Coldplay, Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles and Wyclef Jean.

But it's a real world, so Justin Timberlake and 50 Cent are more than likely to squeeze in there and become spoilers for more deserving work.

Still, it was a great enjoyment on Friday and Saturday nights to see Steely Dan perform at Roseland. In their so-called prime, they were not a touring band.

After a disastrous run in 1973 opening for the Electric Light Orchestra, Becker and Fagen took the group off the road and never returned. Six great albums followed: "Can't Buy a Thrill," "Countdown to Ecstasy," "Pretzel Logic," "Katy Lied," "The Royal Scam," and "Aja." In 1981, they released "Gaucho" and folded their tent, presumably never to be seen again.

But in 1994, the Dan resurfaced. Fagen had put out two solo albums and, with the help of his wife, songwriter Libby Titus, fashioned the New York Rock and Soul Revue. The time was right to let Steely Dan go live. Several successful tours led to "Two Against Nature," an album that lived up to the duo's reputation for twisted lyrics in songs like "Cousin Dupree" with its tangy suggestion of incest.

The weekend's shows mostly ignored "Nature," and concentrated instead a lot on "The Royal Scam" and "Aja." In fact, the two-and-half-hour show began with the title track from "Aja," an eight-minute-plus jazz opus that is probably the most complicated in the group's canon.

Leave it to Steely Dan not to start a sold-out show with a hit or even something bouncy. But as Fagen said later: "It gets it out of the way. Then it's all down hill."

The Steely Dan ensemble consists of 12 or so players besides Becker and Fagen. The most famous is sax player Cornelius Bumpus, known for his work as an original Doobie Brother.

But the three other horn players are equally remarkable. Lead guitarist Jon Harrington, who stands stage left and a little separate from the others, was a star both nights. Twenty-five-year-old drummer Keith Carlock was so commanding I would recommend Pete Townshend pick him up for the next Who tour without question. And so on.

You can only imagine musicians with sweating palms waiting for their audition with perfectionists Becker and Fagen. (Carlock was overheard saying he'd had a couple of drinks on Friday night before the show just to calm down; I'd be nervous to hear him sober.)

The shows were full of music, which is not something you might say these days of other acts. Nothing was sampled or supplemented. In the airy space of Roseland the horns melted like butter, the background singers sounded like angels and the guitars crackled.

Fagen perched at an electronic keyboard or wandered center stage while he sang. Becker knocked off some virtuoso guitar riffs and even got to speak-sing lead on two songs -- the new "Slang of Ages," and the classic, story-driven "Haitian Divorce" about a woman who returns from her Caribbean divorce trip pregnant with a local's baby and tries to pass it off as her ex-husband's.

In the end, though, it was the stuff from "Everything Must Go" that I really wanted to hear. Not just the title track, but also "Godwhacker" (which hit a hot groove on Saturday night), "Slang of Ages" -- and I wouldn't have minded hearing "Blues Beach," "Pixeleen" and "Things I Miss the Most," all of which have been rotated in and out of sets through the tour.

The show was a hit, in every sense. The album may have been abandoned by Warner Bros., but hey, what album hasn't been? "Two Against Nature" didn't start out as a sales success until the Grammys bolstered it, and I'm sure the same will happen again with "Everything Must Go."

You have to please the majority of folks who buy the tickets, and I’m sure
The majority are gonna be folks who want and expect to hear stuff from the
Greatest hits cd they own. It might be the only LEVEL 42 album they own.

I disagree that the majority of Level 42's concert-goers these days would be
the greatest-hits-cd crowd, so this brings up an interesting point...  how
"Level 42 literate" do you think current-day '42 concert goers are?  I'd wager that
the crowd is predominantly die hard fans.

If Level 42 were playing free shows or part of a lineup of other bands in a music
festival, then you'd probably be right...  but my sense is that anyone who shells
out UKP20+ only to see one band (who btw hasn't produced an album in nearly
10 years) is going to be a serious fan.

"Fan"-level aside though, I also say that its probably common sense (and good
marketing) for them to continue playing the old stand-by hits...  I mean, are you
really that disgruntled as you're hearing SAY played live?

On a related note, at least Level 42 has a healthy list of top hits to "replay" live...
think about the bands that really only had one or two big hits, and seeing them
live is basically a waiting game until they play those songs... ;)
i.e., Dexy's Midnight Runners (who also seems to be touring the UK later this year.)

cheers,
Eric

p.s.  I'm suffering some sort of withdrawal from the lack of regular AG blasphemy... ;)

At which point I can contain myself no longer. What, I ask you, is with
the constant appearance of Running in the Family in every set, both live
and recorded? Does anybody like that song? Give me just about any other
track from the same album, please, 'cause they're all great, but RITF puts
me right to sleep. Was it a hit? It's right up there with The Chant Will

Lolita,
I was thinking of heading to the Steely Dan show in San Diego area late next week.  Is it a great show?  Great band to see live?
I like their music but have never seen them.

Don,

I hope you didn't mind the 'casio drums' at the concert. Which
casio drum module did they have plugged in? I hear that the <a
href="http://www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&catalog=Music%20Instruments§ion=Starter%20Keyboards&product=SA%2D67">SA-67</a>

has a really hot drum patch! :) After the endless whining and moaning
about the album, it's good to see that you enjoyed the show! :) I
caught the show early in the tour (Paso Robles, CA) and it was really
excellent. The most poignant single comment running through the Steely
Dan community is regarding the new drummer, Keith Carlock. He
delivered an absolutely amazing performance on the drums and played like
a seasoned veteran. Carlock is probably not much older than 30,
which places him a full generation younger than the concert crowd,
which at the Paso Robles show averaged 45-50. My wife and I (both in
our early 30s) felt distinctly out of place.

For more on Keith Carlock, see:
http://www.steelydan.com/2kband.html#carlock
http://www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull.asp?alt=100008037
http://www.dandom.com/carlock/

This was the rough track list from the Paso Robles show:
Opening number (missed it), Aja, Time out of Mind, Godwhacker,
Blues Beach, Slang of Ages, Do it Again, Caves of Altamira,
Peg, Home at Last -- intermission -- 'The Steely Dan Show', Janie
Runaway segue to Hey Nineteen, Haitain Divorce, Things I Miss the Most,
Parker's Band, Josie, Kid Charlemagne, Don't Take me Alive -- encores:
My Old School, FM.

While I won't give a full track by track run down, Here are a few thoughts:

1) Aja is an ambitious song to try live, but it worked out well.
Solo was by Walt Weiskopf (another hot player).

2) Time out of Mind: One of my faves from Gaucho, this one cooked, the
bridge section was excellent.

3) Didn't care for 'Slang of Ages', it just doesn't seem to fit. I
would have liked instead to hear 'Lunch with Gina', which is my favorite
off the new album. Becker sings okay, but the song just doesn't do
anything for me.

4) The Janie Runaway to Hey Nineteen segue was a nice touch and clever
considering the lyrical and thematic associations between the two songs.

5) While I've never cared for Parker's Band while listening to Pretzel
Logic, it was a really unbelievable song to hear live. This was one
of the high points for the crowd. It's strange how different songs
(and the entire musical experience) are when heard and experienced live.

6) Home at last - one of my favorite songs from Aja. I would have
loved to hear this song at Roseland, I'm sure it was a very sentimental
moment for Becker, Fagen, and the rest of the band, i.e., post 9/11
anniversary and in their home city at a great venue. It is a great
song but didn't have the same feel in the middle of a livestock arena
in rural California with the smell of manure wafting through the air.
Not exactly a dan-friendly concert setting.

7) The definite high point from the Paso Robles show was 'Josie', which
is a crowd and band favorite. Keith Carlock had a stupendous drum
break in the middle, keeping the groove and time throughout the most
incredible drum solo I've ever heard live (and I've sat through far
too many mediocre drum breaks at various jazz concerts through the
years).

8) The encores were a little predictable. It would have been nice to
hear them throw in an R&B cover or a Jazz cover of some kind for
an encore.

Those of you close enough to catch a show, it will be well worth your
money.

I've going to catch the show again on 9/28 in Santa Barbara. Any
digester that want to join me, send me an email. AG, you can have
my extra ticket if you can just find your way to LAX. I'll pick you
up and chauffeur you to the show and back. Certainly some generous
digester out there will sponsor a nice round trip ticket! Mikey, can't
you just print out tickets for free from a machine at your travel
agency? Make AG's ticket round trip, Heathrow <---> LAX, anytime
centered on 9/28. Many Thanks!! :)

I was put on hold today for an extended period of time and was treated to the muzak version of Donald Fagen's "I.G.Y."  Would my office have been higher than the first floor I would have jumped. I had to rush home and listen to "The Nightfly" to escape the memory of the "flaccid regurgitation of art" that is Muzak. My fear of elevators is founded after all. I have yet to hear any Level 42 Muzak.

By the way, are there any other Stephen Simmonds fans here. Please speak up.

I don't have that one, but I do have the Kings Of Tomorrow Sessions, which is pretty
good.  Its got a bit of a garage house feel to it, but its decent.  Great vocals.  Either
way, Sandy Rivera has been around a long time...  I'm sure there are many other
mix CD's available with him on the decks.

Not sure if I mentioned this last time I wrote about non-Level obsessions, but recently
I've picked up some material by Kaskade and more of the Konton Sunset Chill series.
Both are excellent.  Also had a listen to the new Kraftwerk CD, but was not favorably
impressed...  mostly a rehash of Tour De France song variants (I guess that was the
point...)

BTW, in August, I put together a "Summer Brew" mix of best-of-summer tracks... a
variety of funky pop, deep house and some old school thrown in for good measure.  Anyone
interested in a tracklist should email me privately.

cheers,
Eric
