| I think there are some here that don't skim ForeverNow, so here's the latest bit of news: "Bjørn Jeppesen has reported a new Level 42 gig at Skive Beachparty, Denmark June 7th 2003. Visit www.beachparty.dk for details (in Danish)" Apologies for the direct lift, but as it's news I imagine there is no harm done, j __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends.... Usually I try contribute items or information that is somewhat beneficial & relevant for most on here, or try to make people laugh, or try to "piss off" the Level 42 establishment; but I must confess that there are other issues to which seem much more important, at least for me. I know that this is not a political forum and that we have a diverse world community here. The looming threat of war however, especially during this pivotal and defining moment, must be at the top of everybody's mind - no matter which side you support - or even if you care. Do I hope that the USA starts another campaign, against Iraq, not really, not 100% convinced yet - but I must admit that he (Saddam) has not helped his case at all. BUT, I do feel that this has gone on for way too long, the USA, UN, EU, and other influential nations have just stood by and tried to ignore this problem - waiting for the others to do something. I am not anti-war however, I believe that there is a time and place, when all civil actions have been exhausted. But no matter what views my opponents have - I am so thankful that we have the right to voice whatever opinion we have no matter how much in the minority they (or I) may be in. I think what we are seeing at the UN (mainly with the strong objections from Europe) is this sort of diplomatic maneuvering that has always taken place behind close doors until a consensus has been reach, I think this is the first time, in a long while, that we are seeing the diplomatic dialog happen in front of the world. I also think that the countries that are for and against the war should come clean about how their true national interests would be affected - as on both sides of this debate, I fear that money has clouded and dictated policy, instead of the desire to establish true peace in this volatile region. Let's hear the real reasons from every UN member - not threats and endless UN proposals. Whatever the outcome however, I was in Saudi Arabia (USAF) for the first go around - I wish the men and women from every country that have been sent reluctantly to this area of the world - I pray for their safety and their prompt return home - in the conditions that they were sent. AND as I think that WAR is not far around the corner, that the Iraqi people are remembered and calculated for when bombs start to fall. Strange how our world has changed so much in only 2 years. In closing, few know that we had a digest member and a few others, directly affected by the WTC 9/11 attack, I remember phoning another digest member two time zones away, to see if they were even alive - MOST THANKFULLY - this person in still with us, I sincerely hope that whatever the outcome - that here in the USA and the civilized world - NEVER have to go through that sense of terror and disbelief. In the words of my friend Mo.......PEACE! Michael

>> From: Laurence Green <laurence.green @ scottwilson.com> I guess I'm looking for the most average song; the one which just passes us by and we accept it as a reasonable Level 42 song? Some candidates: ... Last Chance << No, no, no, no, no, and no again. "Last Chance" is definitely in the top quartile in my book. >> who needs lyrics when you can write something like 'Gresham Blues' - amazing song. I defy anyone to play that song and not hum it for the rest of the day. << No, no, etc. The only redeeming feature of that song is that it reminds me of the night I stayed in the Gresham Hotel in Dublin. If I want blues, I'll put on Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughan.

| If there are errors, it can only be because I’m being dragged down to playing at your level. Like when Oxford play Bury. To business. Laurence wrote: "On another note -- who needs lyrics when you can write something like 'Gresham Blues' - amazing song. I defy anyone to play that song and not hum it for the rest of the day." Er, I’ll take that challenge. But I’ll raise you from ‘rest of the day’ to ‘the next ten minutes’. I like it fine, but as far as the hummability factor goes it’s right up there with Archie Shepp. >4 - Bush... I mean Blair... err, I meant Bush... >From: Eric J. Hansen <ehansen @ worldmachine.com> > >And, last I checked, [if you're Canadian] you also get to not be >British... I think this is a fair retort given that plenty of Americans >think Bush is full of shit... myself included (how's them apples)... in >fact, probably about as many as Brits who think Blair is full of it >(albeit for supporting Bush and not having any sense of his own). This is the crux of it for many of us over here. Not for nothing did I recently joke about the 51st state of the USA. There are two issues for us to deal with, the morality of the conflict and the subjugation of our nation. It’s coming to something when, for the time being at least, I’d be less embarrassed to be French. >And (thirdly) I just love it when people use the pronoun "they" in this >type of context... if you're about to wage war on someone, I think you >ought to be a bit more articulate. In any event, I'm going to start an >association called the "Anti-Defamation League of They" and then make a >big stink every time I see this sort of generalization. That’s just what they want you to do. >Sorry for the tangent, but if you saw Bush on the tube last night (that's >TV for not subway), you'd have been ill.... I still am. The scenario which most intrigues me is that the resolution isn’t passed and Bush is obliged to follow through with his ‘we’ll just do it anyway’ approach. It’s feasible that with this one act he could finally usurp Britain’s long held position as Most Globally Reviled Nation. I don’t know why you people ever voted out that Jed Bartlet bloke. >1 - (Off Topic) Go West Live >From: Jason and Sherry <jasonandsherry @ earthlink.net> > > A while ago Peter Cox and Richard Drummie re-formed Go West and did a >few live shows (some with a full band including Level 42 players Lyndon >Connah and Gavin Harrison). Does anyone out there have any audio and / or >(NTSC) video footage of any shows they did? The Americans, and indeed the British without a ghoulish sense of schadenfreude, may not be aware that Peter Cox has been recruited to replace the hilariously self-important Mark Shaw on Reborn In The USA, a Saturday night entertainment extravaganza in which a bizarre mixture of has-beens and never-wases are touring America to try and relaunch their careers. I didn’t see the end of it so I don’t know who was kept and who got voted off, but I hope that at least they’ve retained Sonia, whose hyperbolic rendition of the abysmal Greatest Love Of All can only have been done as a bet to see how many meaningless pseudo-soul clichés could be crammed into three minutes. >4 - i thought >From: David Boychuck <dboychuk @ vaxxine.com> > >I thought this was a level 42 mailing not a political platform>?? It is whatever we make it. Take it somewhere and be sure someone will follow. | It seems that I've hit a nerve with my recent post/rant regarding Bush, Blair and the impending war. At Tom pointed out, political commentary is likely to do that. A few follow-up comments: I'd like to thank the folks who replied to me directly via email. Although I received supporting as well as opposing retort, I think the main point was that this is a topic best discussed offline (via email) and NOT on the Level 42 Digest. I've always thought of the Digest as an open forum for a wide range of related topics/interests, but I'll admit that this particular topic enters into the DMZ of Level 42 relevance (but just wait until there's some news about the 42nd Airborne or something... <-- this is a joke.) So for those who were offended by my inclusion of political commentary in the Level 42 Digest, I apologize. That said, these are my views, and if anyone is still inclined to comment on them and carry on an intelligent dialogue, please feel free to email me directly. Lastly (on this topic), I'd like to respond to the insinuation made about "if I subscribe to this Digest, do I have to share your political views?" [sic] The short (non-emotional) answer is NO. I think my stance on the direction and `moderation' of content on the Level 42 Digest is fairly well known: I provide hosting and technical services to operate the Digest, but I do not exercise any control over the content that is published. -- Monique commented about the # of subscribers on the list. The attrition from 615 to 602 (currently) subscribers over the past few months is mainly due to subscribers' email accounts that either became invalid, or consistently could not receive mail (over quota, etc.) The list flushes these accounts periodically. On average, there are 1-2 new subscribes and an equal number of unsubscribes on a daily basis. Since there is very little promotion of the Digest (other than the original "we're back" email that many of you received in December), it doesn't surprise me that the only new subscribers we get are those that specifically searched for Level 42 and happened to find us. cheers, Eric | ||

Isn't That why Joe Jackson was/is against videos. Isn't that why video killed the radio star? But at the same time, the video artists flourished; Cindy Lauper who promoted WWF through video, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Men at Work, The Bangles, Culture Club, and so on infinitely. In the end, as we shall continue to pusillanimously debate, it is the music that ultimately dictates the worth of a song...once we all agree that image and 'hip-ness' have never had anything to do with rock and roll, or pop music, or whatever it is we're calling it this week. Right Razor Boy? Colin P.S. Bummer! You missed a bracket, or parenthesis, if you're not into the whole brevity thing, man. P.P.S. I'm not getting enough Friesen over here...somebody turn up the Friesen.
