Hardly seems fair to use FOREVER NOW as an example of the quality of Level
42's music, as this was far from being anywhere near their strongest song.
Thus my points holds true, you can't compare the quality of Mark King's
output to the current stuff in the charts, which is just lame glorified
kareoke cover versions for the most part.

Good luck to Mark for using the name to get a few more bums on seats, or
at least, standing up in front of them! (if you were following last
weeks discussion.) He's had a string of hit's (along with the others
passing through the band), and this is the only benefit, apart from the
odd royalty cheque.

Whether he will become a caberet band I'm not sure. The Jazz Cafe with
tables and soup in the basket is step one. That would be sad as they
really play dance music. A lovely quote form Phil Oakey on that
interveiw a while back when he said, "We've become a Human League
tribute band." Perhaps this is what's really going on with Mark.

Note for Don Z

Hi mate. I heard two of those Yamaha comercials back in the 80's and
was really surprized. I can't remember if it was two different ones or
the same one twice. Too slow to tape them, of course, but then it would
have been sad at the time. However now - (there's a cue for a song!)
interesting for posterity!

I want to make sure all two or three of you understand my comment below. I'm guilty of not using a paragraph break in my rant.

The "Same with John Mayer" should have been the end of the paragraph, meaning he was a breath of fresh air like Avril.  (only later was I corrected and found out she was not a breath of fresh air).  I like John Mayer and I think he's good.

JM

Well, over the weekend, with it being so very cold and snowy all week, I decided to clean out a few left over boxes that I packed years ago.  I am glad that I did - as I found some great stuff that I thought I had lost or never knew that I had!   I came across some LIVE versions of - A Pharoes Dream Of Endless Time, It's Not The Same For Us, Weave Your Spell - sound quality not too bad considering it is on cassette (remember them?) also - came across a ton of interviews from the 1991-1994 era, with Mark being GOD OF THE DAY on BBC Radio 1, mainly Dutch and English interviews.  Also, came across cassette copies of the full demo albums -Guaranteed and Forever Now.  A few more surprises were in there too, just can't remember all of them so early this Monday morning!   I will find a way to get these "out there" - checking with a few webmasters to get these available - give me a  few days!

Good point Don, pop stars, until very recently, actually had to PLAY an
insturment. Yes, pop has always been about image but it was in addition to
musical ability because synthetic and digital abilities have not always been
there.

Sure, there were a few "manufactured" bands out there, but at least they had
real musicians backing them up on tour. Even BONEY M had musicians on stage
during live shows, not 4 people dancing with nary an instrument in sight!

Duran Duran were amazing musicians, especially John Taylor on bass. Thompson
Twins had astounding percussion. Even "When In Rome" could play a tune.

Pop today is even worse and MORE empty than it was in the past. That is
quite a feat! Today pop celebrates the inarticulate (ghetto language), is
over-sung (23 back up singers, every word echoed and dragged out in the
vowels), and lacks the human element in insturmentation. Because of this,
there is less differentation in musical style...machines will always play
like machines but human groups develop unique sounds. It has become
EXCLUSIVELY about style....they come on stage and it is all about the
clothes and image becuase there ARE NO MUSICIANS OR INSTURMENTS ON
STAGE....leaving all attention focused on the dancing.

Of course, there is angry-white-kid pop too: The Offspring, Rage Against The
Machine et al. At least they BRING insturments with them and PRETEND to play
them. Let's face it, hitting two chords over and over is hardly musical.
It's all about the image of not showering and not caring. If you keep the
distortion way up, you can bury the fact that you are screwing up the
octaves.

There is also the HITTIN 30 pop: The Strokes, Stereolab, Yo La Tango, Belle
And Sebastian....these people have even less musical ability than the angry
white kid bands. Annoyingly fey, these gee-whiz melody wimps turn out music
that sounds like it was recorded in a basement by someone who never learned
to play a piano beyond "chopsticks" and likes to write songs about dates
they had in their freshman year of college. So long as you own a pair of
horn rimmed glasses, live in an urban area and work in graphic design the
rest of the week, you will fit right in.

Level 42 might have posed for the pics and wore the make-up (see World
Machine promo pics) but they could play triplets, 140bpm, choruses, bridges,
and roto toms.

Pete, I gotta say, this is the stupidest thing I've
read in some time.

With that coming from the KING of stupid remarks I find it funny. The comment was in relation to your ramblings and basically (for want of using a better phrase!!) 'extracting the urine out of you!!!

I did think at first you were AG having a laugh and out to wind us up but he at least writes with some wit and intelligence even if I don't agree with him too often.
From previous personal correspondence with him i know he's also a decent bloke with our differences put to one side. Hence I know it's not him!

However your ramblings remind me of the type of bloke you meet in the pub who has an opinion on everything and a real 'know it all' who feels they always are right.
Your then just waiting for someone to tip a pint over their head and shut em up!!!

Get it!  I like Inside Wants Out even better than Room For Squares.  There are some great songs on there, not found on the latter release ("Comfortable" and "Love Soon", for instance).  And the acoustic versions, like "Neon", are fantastic!

Hi all,

Firstly don't bid on the 'Comfort & Joy' 12" - it's not a single by Mark King. The guy selling must be confused.

Secondly, I take JTs points. Having been to see Grupo Mark King / Level 42/ call it what you will - I enjoyed it / them, every time. Maybe I was just happy to hear the Level 42 covers. I think as musicians, they're most able to do the job required of them and delivered exactly what I expected, good quality Level 42 songs. Am I surprised that some people don't like them? No. Everyone has their opinion and in my opinion this current line-up is not sacred. I neither want, nor try to compare them with what I regard as Level 42 - (no more so than I would any of the original line-up plus three musicians of their choice).

Whilst I don't agree with about half of what JT says on this matter, good on him. He's putting his points across. The whole point of us being here is that we rate the music of Level 42 very highly, therefore it stands to reason that if we rate other random musicians, they might not be rated as highly as the band we love. This in itself shouldn't surprise us.

Having said that, I personally have seen enough greatest hits for now. I doubt I would go to any other concerts by this group unless Mark had some new material out. I enjoyed the One Man tour more than the Trash tour - and I enjoyed the Trash tour more than the Rare Level 42 tour and I enjoyed the Rare Level 42 tour more than the greatest hits tour - so it's kind of a downward trend at the moment.

Well,
I've skimmed a few of the next posts and a few things
dawned on me...some seem to think that I have some
agenda of conversion; I don't. I dont care, nor
especially need for anyone to agree with me.
All I said was (something close to) I THINK xxx are
subpar. This is not a declaration that all must
follow. After all, there are McDonalds all over the
world because a great deal of people find this edible.

I do think, to a learned person, that my statement's
"construction" lays on very solid foundation.
But as I say, I am not looking for people to have an
ephiphany and say, "oh my gawd, jay, I _now_ realize
I've heard cats phuck with more harmony than xxx
sings/plays/bakes a cake". (apologies to a.d.clay).
Also, it can't help but be noticed that EVERYONE
coming back with sad little retorts has no refute with
my statement, aside from a few bizarre comments that
mean nothing. They are all simply "slagging", which I
guess is the only thing to do when one can not argue
The Point.
Music IS a language, folks. There are rules. See those
nifty pegs on the top of MK's bass (or on the bridge
if he's playing headless), he plays with them cuz the
music dictates that he has to stay in tune with the
rest of the song.
Voice is the same way. (yes, music rules _can_ be
broken, but we're not sonically ready/in need of a
Picasso of music).
So, kids, when it comes to not agreeing, simply follow
some of the more mature posts here (see E. Hanson or
Win) and just simply say "I dont agree", or better
yet, give a debate, refute a point.
If you want to posture, do it over private email.

As for someone wanting "the last word", I see
little-to-no point in when the "last word" is so
absurdly something like, "you tell him, steve-dave!!!"
(apol to kevin smith). This fan-boy mentality is
really what you crave? Fine...
As for Freud, I dont believe I've even mentioned him
(although since you are nifty and neat, I _am_ looking
for a good conditioned _The Problem of Anxiety_
(simply the earlier translation of _Inhibitions,
Symptoms & Anxiety_, maybe you could sell me yours?).

I am not here, taking time away from my 12-16 hour
work days to make friends, piss people off, and
certainly not to impress people.
This music, as with all of us, has a certain meaning
to me.
At the current time I see one of my past 'heros' (for
lack of a better) playing to the lowest common
denominator. And I wonder why others dont see this.
This is where my curiosity lay.

And I am glad that a few others either take time to
think (especially before typing something) or at least
appreciate a different view than 'they are The Best
band in thew world!!'.

apolos for the typos,
j

Yes love the Hall and Oates song and love this version too. It uses the great tune with new lyrics, arrangement & feel of the song and I just think they have it perfect.
I suppose that will upset all the 'pop' haters on here but hey ho such is life.

I know to admit you like 'pop music' is not very hip but I have built my whole business around this. Although I sell all types of music many customers cross over into pop and I even supply a rock/metal shop in Sweden and he always adds in some pop items too so that shows there are plenty of people out there that like variety!

enjoy the music
