I quote Mr. Keith Ashley,

"(Anyone thinking of re-quoting anything i've put and trashing it, their
response is not welcome or clever. That includes you smart arse's who take
the piss out of peoples grammar or for keeping the caps keys on,arrogance is
not attractive and it doesnt make you right)."

I simply could not agree more, mate!

I was at Sherwood, absolutely fantastic wasn't it? I was at the front (more or less) level with Nathan & Sean.
No surprises as far as the set was concerned, but who cares! I'm looking forward to more of the same at Croydon in October, if I don't decide to go to the Circus Tavern next month first.

I checled my copy and its distorted !  I hadnt play it a couple of years !
I looks like the outside of the disc becomes yellow ?
What kind of process is this; i never heard of a self distructing ceedee !!
In the end of days this ceedee is worthless?

What I would like to know is has anyone made a copy (for backup purposes only of course) of a 'new' disc to see if the copy also goes bad?

I know that Mark's band had to leave for Indonesia quite early that next morning after the Sherwwod Forest gig - but did anybody have a chance to ask Mark about this new Level 42 album?  Just curious to see what he may have said.

I forgot to mention that a very good friend of mine and fellow digest member - told me that I needed to get this STING - ALL THIS TIME DVD.

Well, I got it - and it is absolutely BRILLIANT!

It comes with an awesome documentary and full concert.   The concert takes place at Sting's house in Italy.  Sadly, the concert is on September 11, 2001 , just hours after the attacks on the USA, to which Sting had to modify the set list for obvious reasons.   Dominic Miller and Manu Katche (sp) are featured live on this DVD.  It is probably the most heartfelt and sincere performance I have ever seen -  I STRONGLY advise you get this DVD - you won't regret it.  The set list is a Sting's fans dream come true - Seven Days, Set Them Free, and Fragile - were the high-points for me.   I have to admit though, listening to Englishman in New York was difficult - I can only imagine how the Sting and the band felt.

Happy belated Father's Day! I hope you were pampered in all the ways you wanted.

Got my pair for Steely Dan August 14th. I've never seen them live after 25 years of fandom and I cannot wait. Whoooohoooo.

Great post Matt. Don, I know where you're coming from. To me, 2AN has a bit more jazzy cool edge to it than EMG.  Although more than a few EMG tracks could easily have fit into the groove of 2AN, it seems in general, 2AN has a more bittersweet cool Steely Dan feel. EMG has more songs which are more on the pop side of the scale. In a way they remind of certain songs from The Nightfly.  The Nightfly is a superb pop album and I've heard it at least 50 times; Aja and Gaucho are miles beyond and except for a few songs, I can't realistically compare these albums.  There is no song that comes close to Aja or Babylon Sister on The Nightfly. My favs from each are Time Out of Mind, Home At Last and The Nightfly; all kind of similar songs.

And I also agree with Don that all SD is musical mastery. Listen to Peg or Home At Last for awesome bass, perhaps not "wizardry", but I think so. To only identify one instrument though is well missing the entire point. I remember the handlebar moustache guitarist from The Doobies saying more important than speed was taste, something he felt was lacking in the music of the day.

Notwithstanding, EMG is brilliant.  The song EMG is a modern SD classic in every way. I love it. Tracks 2 & 6 also have classic SD components, like, hmhm, superb intro's and finales. This is a great follow up to 2AN.  I think Don's saying he likes 2AN more and I tend to agree (on the whole).  Maybe I've just listened to 2AN longer, but I feel the sum of the parts surpasses EMG (for now). Janie Runaway is too cool. Almost Gothic; a classic mature Dan. Then Jack of Speed, cooler.  What a string of magnificent songs.

What I find odd is that all you Dan Fans out there keep talking about Aja, Gaucho Two Against Nature, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, etc.  There is a lot of Steely Dan left over that gets no mention?!?! What about The Royal Scam? Katy Lied? Countdown To Ecstasy? Pretzel Logic? Can't Buy A Thrill?  What is it like Aja marks the refined era or something? I hope you all are listening or have had your way with those offerings, particularly the Royal Scam, which, is just as important and outstanding as any of the routinely mentioned Dan.

It seems Andrew takes exception to any SD objection.  Does this mean AG is a "true fan" and we are not? First of all, if there was ever a band I would gamble on and say I am committed to everything ever released, Steely Dan would have to top the list.  Come on Andrew. Are you telling us The Last Mall, which is very IGYish is better than most of the material on 2AN? Again, I very much like all of EMG.

I just have been listening to Shapeshifter, one of my fav 42 tunes. This song is perfect to me; the intro, body and end. I challenge Mark to write an instrumental as good, or better than this.  Hey, if he is past his best I understand.  The song is damn hard to beat.  But, if I were Mark, and thought like me, I'd be trying to out do that one, simply for my own satisfaction.

Colin
