| Colin reponded well: > Miles pretty much covers all the styles > and eras and to me he is a legend, compared to a > great, as Brubeck is. This actually made sense to me when I read it. Miles was more popular for a longer period of time, and that period of time saw many changes and developments in jazz itself, some of which he spearheaded. I'd throw him in as a "legend," but admittedly, he leaned heavily upon the shoulders of the luminaries he brought into his band. You might also get an argument that a trumpet player, even a magician like the early Miles Davis, is more of a one-trick pony and as such can't land as heavily on the jazz richter scale as an accomplished pianist with a fuller range of sonic possibilities. But I'm a keyboard player, so what would you expect me to say? The piano is so nice and push-button; whenever I blow into a horn, it sounds like an elephant with pneumonia. A wonderfully specific skill. > I stated you should > not judge a player's ability on the merit of studio > material alone, to which you agreed. That does not > mean you cannot recognize great playing when it's > there. I think the earlier 42 material, in > particular, indicates the musicianship is top notch. I give credit to Mark King and Phil Gould as geniuses on their instruments within their chosen styles. But I wonder if anyone else shares my idea that Mike as a keyboard improvisor is good but perhaps not mind-blowing? I am waiting to hear his solo piano album to get a better idea . . . > Also, now > that we are in our golden years, the maturity of the > 20's crowd always seems to slap us in the face. truer words were never spoken. OK, enough. thanks Mo for the kind reference, may you enjoy many Sundays with it! by the way, I updated my site, it's prettier now, and check out the links section if you are bored at work, there is some interesting and funny surfing to be done there, methinks. If anyone cares to recommend a good link to me, I'd love to put it up there. have a good week, -Tom "http://www.emeraldsoul.com" __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! | >2. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? >From: Colin Gupta < thegoop @ sympatico.ca> > >It reminds me of these 14 year old girls, who when at the end of Eyes Wide >Shut at the theatre said that was the worse movie they had ever seen. Strange choice, given that it could indeed justifiably lay claim to being the worst film ever made. But I take your point. >Really, though, most people are much more intelligent that you give them >credit for. I think we'll have to accept that your social glass is half full and my misanthropic one is half empty. >It is not simply a matter of academics, or culturalization. What about >adaptation and manipulation, (in a very broad sense)? Not sure I follow you. If I'm supposed to give people credit for having an opposable thumb, we really are at odds. Anyway, a propos of nothing, here's an article I stumbled over while reading Oxford's free music magazine the other night, from the 'send in your demos' page. It followed a vitriolic dismissal of a band called Locker 25 (sample - 'The third track is a mercifully brief 6 minutes but it's called Fee Fi Fo Funk, which makes us want to go round to their 6th form common room and butcher them with heavy duty garden tools'). It might upset a few people but I think it's funny. And I know mikethepom will like it because it's got some of those clever rude words in. OVER A YEAR Well spank us rigid, this is even worse than Locker 25. Over A Year are so named because we felt we'd aged a year in the time it took to listen all the way through this abject monument to blinding tedium. It's got some ambient Spanish guitar shuffling on it. It's got indulgent guitar solos and overwrought, angst-ridden poetry. It's got 14 f***ing tracks of the stuff. W**kers! What did we ever do to deserve that? Vile, self-pitying outpourings from the sort of proficient but soulless musos who say stuff like, "But Mark King is just such a talented bass player", when what they really meant to say was, "Please just stab me to death now as I am of no value to the human race". People who would have you sit down and "appreciate" the rhythm track on an Annie Lennox song, or queue up to buy Roachford tickets. You have no idea how relentlessly depressing this is. We can just picture them all now, nodding sagely to each other as they indulge in yet another bout of slow-motion musical onanism. Pub, anyone? | Colin >I think, the record buying, NSYNC > masses get disappointed with this, though. [variations in tunes] I wouldn’t think so. As long as Justin, et al are shaking their booty and stuff I have to think that crowd would be appeased. There was some live Timberlake concert on Mtv and he improvised some stuff and the crowd seemed to be no less “loving” it, screaming, etc. It’s the “true” fans that I would be worried about with this situation… > reminds me of these 14 year old girls, who whenat > the end of Eyes Wide Shut at the theatre said that > was the worse movie they had ever seen. They > obviously went to see Cruise and Kidman and not to > see the latest Kubrick offering. Well, that storyline, unlike a pop tune, was hardly catered toward the mind of a 14-year old (although one could argue that it didn’t involve thought process too much beyond that age), so they really can’t be too, too scorned for that. It’s not like the two of them (TC & NK) have a track record of intelligent/challenging filmographies. >I think the earlier 42 material, in > particular, indicates the musicianship is top notch. Medium notch. Maybe. >Really, though, most > people are much more intelligent that you give them > credit for. Nah. > It is not simply a matter of academics, > or culturalization. What about adaptation and > manipulation, (in a very broad sense)? I agree. Stupid people are in Harvard, I can certify this. “Education” (etc) has little to do with it. Common sense, morals and manners do though. > that we are in our golden years, the maturity of the > 20's crowd always seems to slap us in the face. 20s/maturity. Two things that I would never think to put together. (aside from the rare ‘exception to the rule’, which happens far, far too infrequently) Hell, look at the tattoo-getting/gotten rate… (granted this encompasses near-all age groups…) Hell look at (just about anything else)... hell, hell, hell, j(ay) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
