1.  "jazz" and oh my gawd: level 42 talk!!

Welcome back from holiday, CG.

>Aren't the most popular jazz albums Take Five and
>Breezin'? What's that saying for Jazz?

Scary. I figure the sales of these albums are always
from the people that need a ‘coffee table’ cd; the
trendy ‘cats’ that can put a “jazz” cd on when that
oh-so eclectic company comes over. Although Miles’
_Kind of Blue_ is, rightfully so, fairly high ranked
as “popular”

>Chet Baker for example was considered by one as a
"footnote to jazz". Please.

Gotta dig a Chet reference.

>but Oyo Como Va is one of the ten coolest songs of
all time. It's the taste thing again.

Hmmm, that’s one of those tunes that, when hearing it,
I curse electricity…

>The point being, in regard to level 42 as jazz
>capable, the level of talent required to play jazz is
>varied. I believe all four >original players could
>competently play jazz and that one should not form an
>opinion of capability based on released >material.

Well, true, but I think a fair amount of people
bunting around talk on this have heard all of the
released (and, at the time, unreleased) material and
probably numerous live recordings (if one has trouble
soloing, one can not “jazz”). So yeah, in the sense
that complete wankers, like Phil Collins having a big
band play “su-su-sudio” equals “jazz”, and ‘sirs’
Paul McCartney and Elton John can score “classical”
music, yeah, L42 could’ve made adequate “jazz”.

(intermission)

Something curious going about, as some of you know
there was a chap writing a book about L42, his silly
title was _The Dog’s Bullocks_, or something. Now I
don’t know the past story, but I guess at times he’s
mentioned (on the Web Digest, I guess) that he is
abandoning the project. Seemingly it was in ‘on’ mode
when last week he made a post that he is now dropping
the project because of things he found out –of course
not mentioning them, of course, cuz of “legal” stuff.
He is also dumping all his L42 stuff.
Now the admin on the Web Digest, after also finding
out stuff that can not be disclosed cuz, you guessed
it, “legal” stuff, has made a disclaimer that they
(the Web Digest/Forever Now site) are not/were not
endorsers of the book (nor have ever been)[nor should
anyone able to read have thought them to be, IMO] and
that all past talk of the book is wiped from the site,
and, I imagine, further talk on it is highly
discouraged.

While I am not even going to go the route of ‘what is
censorship’, and such, I find it utterly fascinating
that any time we get some news, it is never really
highly discussed. If this isn’t a thing worth talking
about, I don’t know what the hell is. Something
curious is going on.
Level 42, to me, hold little to no musical value any
more. When I look at the band I see chaos and
psychological weirdness that I have seldom seen in any
professional field. Almost to a comical level (picture
Crockford here).
We are dealing with a band that when one asks a basic
FAQ, “how did they get their name?” we have a handful
of quotes with different answers. Pretty bloody
chaotic.
We’ve got a band leader (here I'm being generous and
calling Cover42 "l42") that has different dates booked
for a gig than the drummer; and then the whole thing
gets cancelled with no word! (Indonesia gig(s) from
earlier this year).
So what kind of tyrannical behavior could get this guy
to stop writing his book? Anyone with perspective and
perception on/toward human nature knows MK can be a
git. So it can’t be that. ..

So until Eric tells us “legally” we shant rap about
this; let’s get at it.

Just cuz I wrote about things here doesn’t mean I
“endorse” ‘em. Of course. (well, aside form Miles and
Chet)…
Oddly,
j(ay)

2.  Mark King's First Solo Album

I ordered Mark King's first solo album 'Influences' from Amazon the other day. What is the general opinion from Level 42 fans on this album? I know his Level bandmates lended their support with this one and that it was produced in 1984, supposedly because M.K. needed a downpayment on a house.

>Jazz has and always will be an alternate or even underground genre. The
>masses are no more musically illiterate today than they have ever been.
>Isn't that like believing all people are generally stupid?

But all people ARE generally stupid. Incredibly stupid. You’re knocking down
your own case here.

>Aren't the most popular jazz albums Take Five and Breezin'? What's that
>saying for Jazz?

I don’t know, what is it saying? I don’t follow your point here. If you’re
saying Brubeck isn’t worthy of being revered as a jazz great, I disagree.
Perhaps you meant something else though.

>The point being, in regard to level 42 as jazz capable, the level of talent
>required to play jazz is varied. I believe all four original players could
>competently play jazz and that one should not form an opinion of capability
>based on released material.

One should not form an opinion of capability based on released material? On
what should one base it then? Should I ascribe to Jeffrey Archer the ability
to be a new Joseph Conrad if he only put his mind to it? How do we know Nick
Rhodes isn’t a latterday Oscar Peterson, simply because he’s failed to
demonstrate it these last 20 years? And if it isn’t on released material,
then on what is your belief that all four original members were capable of
playing jazz based? And how many inadvertently irascible sounding questions
can one paragraph contain?

If you’re saying studio recordings don’t necessarily showcase a player’s
range of ability then I concur, but that’s why I specifically mentioned A
Physical Presence as highlighting shortcomings. There are solos on that
album which clearly demonstrate a lack of proficiency in improvising.

>And by the way, after hours upon hours of listening to EMG, I must say,
>hats off to Andrew. It has really grown on me and I can't wait to see the
>show.

Bah, shut up. I’m not jealous. I can go and see Level 42 and Scrappy Doo
play hits of yesteryear any time I like.
