Possibly true. If "getting through" is your objective.

Yes, I totally agree there is alot on bunk on there,
but all of the things you mention are under the 'other
topics' header, so, if one doesn't want to read them,
one doesn't have to go there, the Level 42 folder is
pretty well divisioned.
Whereas here, noone ever puts 'off topic' in their
subjects.
Unfortunatly alot of the members on the Web-Thing, and
this could be due to the 'other topic' features, have
a big sense of 'community' and take great offense to
some things said. Aside from maybe 5 people on there,
the ability to have a intelligent discourse in
near-impossible. I liken it to living in the Emerald
City where everyone wears green tinted spectacles, so,
of course, everything is green. Someone comes along
and says, "this isn't _really_ green". It's
unacceptable. Unfathomable.
So, the best of both worlds is to surf each, time
permitting (and with the nice-ness of having a quick
conection at work) this list and that list.
Afterall, I dont want to miss ANY news on the release
of 'BIRD'! ;)

In response to Mike, I think the reason the Gould brothers are barely mentioned on Level Best is purely a marketing thing.  They were looking ahead and selling the "new" Level 42 using old hits.  Maybe a lot of people thought they'd split up after Phil and Boon left.  I always thought it a bit rude towards Phil and Boon too, but this is the explanation I came up with...

Oh, and how's this for flamebait: from the very first time I listened to SATS I always thought Tracie was one of the best tracks on it!  And the extended version (not the 7" single version!) is even better because they speeded it up a little, and because of Alan's nice guitar work.  I really like this song because Gary's drumming is so tight.  Mind you, I generally prefer Phil's sound, it is more Level 42 to me, but Gary is a very close second.
Actually, off the Guaranteed album I have always liked Her Big Day a lot too.  I never understood why they didn't make a single out of it like they did Tracie: speed it up a little, make some very cool remixes and there you have it!  Speaking of remixes, I recently discovered that I have the US remix of Tracie (I'd forgotten it even existed) on vinyl.  Excellent remix!

it's last journey through the curtain ...
Hope it won't be too soon in the furture !!

I listen to Early Tapes more than anything else too. gresham Bluesmakes

I'm all for removing this junk if people can/do remember to filter it
out of their outbound messages. The disclaimers and other junk take
up space and bandwidth. And on a rant here, I'm calling these email
footers the "hidden spam" that is plagueing the corporate email world...

Hmm... if you look at what Kelly Osborne did with Madonna's "Like A
Virgin", I think this is a bad idea. ;) Of course I never really liked
Madonna's song in the first place (nor any of her songs... nor her in
general... although there is a Level 42 trivia tie-in here, I believe.)

And I won't even start in with Britney... best to leave that one for AG.

Lenny Kravitz, I believe, could do some creative justice to a number of
Level 42 tracks, as could Red Hot Chili Peppers. I need to give this
one some more thought and write more later.

Are you referring to Jamiroquai and Jay Kaye (JK)? I agree that he is
great, although I think he's unfortunately past-tense now. From what
I've seen, they had great potential and JK's ego pretty much knocked them
off their perch... material has become less and less innovative steadily
over time. If I had to list my favorite Jamiroquai albums in order of
best to worst, it would start with the first, sequentially go through each
one, and then end with the last (or maybe transpose the last two CD's).
I've also seen then 3x in concert - same sequence of "best" to "worst"
I'm afraid. :( Although for you UK cooking fans, I did see the episode
of Jamie Oliver's show where he cooked for Jamiroquai, and that was cool
(this was on the US' Food Network.)

And also, there's a few good Level 42 trivia tie-in's with Jamiroquai
as well, for those interested...

Hate to contradict you my friend, but this is simply not true for everyone.
In the United States anyone who works for a financial institution [Morgan
Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs] must have that disclaimer attached,
and there is no way to delete it. I don't ever see it and there is nothing
that can be done to disable it without disabling the ability to send an
e-mail at all. I can't speak for other industries, but it is an SEC [i.e.
federally mandated] rule for mine. Believe me, I would love to get rid of
it, as it is really annoying and my friends complain.
Sorry for the 'off' topic, but I wanted to clarify...

Lars has been writing a bit about Trigonstock. I did a search on the
Digest archives (http://www.worldmachine.com/level42/search) and only
found 2 other references to Trigonstock. Naturally I am curious about
more details.

I've also read through the info on Boon's site (interesting), and now
I'm wondering when/if this gig's recording might be released. Lars,
can you provide any additional info? (seeing as you have the set list).

Also, how did Trigonstock come about in the first place... just "a
few friends noodling around with some mics and a tape deck?"

Finally, from my perspective, I also find it odd that this event happened
with 3/4 of the original Level 42 band... so I'm wondering if Mark was
invited and didn't come, or there just wasn't a need/desire to have him
there in the first place.

Yes, many questions indeed... :)

thanks!

Hey, Micro-Kids:

Dan Nesselroth's views in the last Digest were smart
and insightful.

Even though I enjoy stuff on the albums from "World
Machine" to "Guaranteed," I find "True Colours" and
"Forever Now" quite a bit better -- in part because
Phil Gould is working the drums like a craftsman. (By
the way, "True Believers" is a work of genius that
still packs a punch nearly 20 years later.)

Also, while the L42 chart successes "World Machine"
and "Running In the Family" drew me into the tent, it
was "Level Best" that made me fiercely interested in
the band's earlier material. To this day I cherish how
true "Love Games," "Starchild" et al were/are to the
best of funk and dance.

TCOY,
The Duke

Hi All

Wow there was me enjoying Level 42's music right through from the start to the final album and taking the music on how it sounded.
Silly me though they obviously 'sold out' from the original plan! So why can't I still enjoy it?

Ok I know I'm gonna be told it's only an opinion etc. etc. but bands move on and try and vary things a bit.
The Gould brothers decided it was time to move on and could look back on some classic years in my opinion of great music.
Meanwhile Level 42 moved on with Mark and Mike putting together new songs and sounds with some new musicians and in my opinion making some great music STILL.

Now the interesting thing for me is that the Gould brothers left to do their own thing but have not made any impact on the music world since except from any Level 42 involvement. They didn't want success or chart songs etc. but it is a shame that such talents aren't enjoyed in the wider world.

Ok so I like pop music and 'slushy' songs (I also like Rock, Soul, New Wave etc or whatever else takes my fancy.).

Sad thing that I am I make 'Midnight Mix' compilations with all my favourite 'slushies' and there are a hundred volumes.
I just enjoy it, I love chilling out to even tracks like 'People' (AG having given me 3 points for my new found love of Jazz with the Gary Husband Trio has just deducted me 50 points for that revelation probably!!)

I'm struggling with the 'Gould Enterprises' bit as if that was the case why haven't they impacted the music scene since? This is not a put down but a genuine question.

Out of interest looking at my Level 42 compilations I put together then most of the songs on volume one come from the pre 1987 era just in case anyone wanted to box me in the 'later' preference catergory.

cheers

Actually, Mike, I think you'll find that, more-often-than-not, the
boilerplate lingo is set up by your email administrator to automatically be
attached to any email that is leaving he company's outbound email system for
a domain other than itself. I know that my company's standard piece is ten
lines long. I know that several of us on the list either work, or have
worked, for companies involved in accounting and finance (myself- KPMG Peat
Marwick, Lolita- Smith Barney, right?): in these cases the lingo is there
for a good reason, too. :) On the other hand, yeah, it'd be nice not to
see it, but it's a small price to pay.

And, in a completely unrelated event, rumors have surfaced that Zaphod
Beeblebrox, notorious gangster and president of the universe, has reportedly
taken up residence near the city of Washington, DC. Mr. Beeblebrox is
wanted for questioning in the questionable dispersion of rare and unrelated
Level 42 music, and the disapperance of one hell of a starship. If you run
into Mr. Beeblebrox, it is recommended that you buy him a drink, as he'll
already likely one drink from the floor.

Hey Colin et al,

well, I also like Greyboy's Freestylin, so here are a
few others I could recommend:

1. Down to the Bone - their Urban Grooves I and II
albums

2. Con funk shun's Greatest Hits

3. Zero 7's "Destiny" - mellower but still great

4. Any album by the group Junk on the faffco label,
out of print now but keep yer eyes peeled

5. A French band called Sheraff

6. The New Orleans band Galactic - "Coolin Off"

7. the 70's one-miss wonder Cymande

8. the Portland group "Heavy Brothers"

9. Dr. John's "Duke Elegant" - funk cover tunes of
Duke Ellington standards

10. how about Little Axe - "The House that Wolf Built"

11. Deep Banana Blackout - "God Made Me Funky" live

12. anything by the Meters

13. Stereo MC's "connected"

14. Anjelique Kidjo has some nice stuff - "Oremi" for
example

I'll think of more later, and some of the above is not
"instrumental" or "pure jazz funk" but it's still
funky and close enough.

 >>>I do like hip hop/jazz and house beat stuff like
DJ greyboy (Freestylin), St
Germain (Boulevard), The New Deal or Bullfrog (hiphop
funk). Can anyone
recommend other stuff like this?

Colin
