Personally my fave is 'Level 42'  You just cannot beat the sound of 'Love Games' and
'Starchild' when they first came out.  Brit Jazz/Funk was just exploding on the scene
and Level 42 led the way.  As a 16 yr old at the time it just blew me away.

I'd have to say that my top three favorites are "Level 42", "True Colors" and "Standing
In The Light". Perhaps odd choices since my first exposure to the band was with
World Machine when it first debuted in the US.

In my opinion, their self-titled release "Level 42" is really a classic, and for alot of
people (die-hard fans or otherwise) defines the Brit-funk genre with tracks like Dune Tune,
Starchild and the reference track Turn It On. Standing In The Light progresses further
into the 80's funk arena with slick studio production courtesy of Dunn & White,
and gave us Micro Kid, SITL, and my own most favorite El Debarge rip-off, People.
The thing that does it for me with True Colors is the "raw" feel, which is out of place
amidst all other Level 42 material.  Maybe True Colors didn't have the same studio
engineering "polish" (compare with SITL, World Machine or RITF), but because of
this you really have to focus on the music, lyrics and concepts, and they all shine on
this album.  True Colors contains perhaps my all-time-favorite Level 42 tracks,
Kansas City Milkman (killer bassline), the funky True Believers, and the haunting
Hours By The Window.

cheers,
Eric

Well I missed the part that makes it an allegory, but I wouldn't dismiss
the treatment outright as a poor-man's imitation sandwich meat.

I think it's great when people tell us about their personal interpretations
of Level 42 songs. I mean, come now campers, we've all known the songs for
well over a decade, and it's not like there's a lot of news about the band
to discuss. So go ahead everybody, spin us some yarns telling of the
jungle of thoughts sprouting from the seeds sown by our lyrical lads.

And to those who disagree, consider that writing is an incomplete
experience. It's the reader's interpretation that completes the picture.

Aaaaahahahaha! *wipes tear from eye* Yep, you don't get this on the
web digest.

In any case, I bought Reason 2 a while back, it's a nifty little
program that acts as a self contained music creation studio of sorts.
You can plug in loop players, synths, effects, a drum machine and it's
midi compatible. Anyway, it came with a loop CD, so I was looking
through it and imagine my surprise when I saw Phil Gould's name in
there.

Sure enough, there are 10 different Phil Gould drum loops and they
sound great. That was kind of a nice bonus, I'm going to try using one
of them pretty soon.

Many thanks to Dean Osborn for copying Dreams & Visions for me.
I've been trying to print off a copy of the cover from Carl's Forevernow.com site however it appears to be sized for a video box instead of a CD case - am I just being plane thick or can someone help me out here !!
The last track on Dreams & Visions is a snippet of a remix of The Sun Goes Down '98 - whilst I'm not great lover of "rap" remixes I think this is fantastic - can anyone burn me a copy ?
Nice to see the old digest back again - whilst not a regular contributer I've been an avid reader since day one - well done Eric !!

The notion that the grouping of a forum into clearly defined boundaries
eliminates nonsense is a charmingly ingenuous one, if the Level 42 Web
Digest is anything to go by. In-jokes, petty vendettas, private
conversations, endless repetition of the same old points, all these and more
are available for those with hours to spare to download page upon page.
Maybe if each user had been limited to a maximum of three postings a day,
that might have made people think slightly longer about what they were
saying before the Post button was hit.

The Pursuit of Accidents is my favourite album. I gather that this is

something to do with it? - or maybe not!
Now that I think about it, there's not much saxophone on TPOA and I am

Hi All

Just had the pleasure of seeing the Gary Husband Trio here in Truro and wanted to say what a great evening it was.
Wouldn't normally sit down and listen to Jazz but certainly have had my ears opened up to some great music tonight.

I saw Gary in the Cafeteria before the gig so I went and disturbed him as he ploughed through his sheet music. Really great bloke and he even came across to see me later before he left to get ready to go onstage to thank me for coming and for my best wishes. A very nice touch and well appreciated.

Anyway if you get chance of seeing them in your area then please make the effort as it will be well worth it. There were only 75 or so there tonight but they gave it there all and thoroughly enjoyed themselves as we all did.
I was tempted to ask him if he'd been asked to get ready for recording a Level 42 album this year but felt it inappropriate really.
He is keen to get his own new album out though and I'm sure it will be worth getting.

cheers

My first guess would be eBay, or do an internet search for laserdisc dealers. Bear in mind while searching that people use four different spellings: laserdisc, laser disc, laserdisk, laser disk. I paid $75 brand new for mine when it came out, and that was when it was still in print.

If Mrs. Pink should happen to be out there and reading this, give me a shout via e-mail when you have a moment.

Hey, Micro-Kids:

My fave three L42 albums -- right now:

1) "World Machine"
2) "Forever Now" (Resurgence)
3) "True Colours"

I really think L42 is of such high quality that even
the most slagged of their albums are heads and
shoulders above lots of pop/rock/R&B, even now.

The name is Lolita, and it was me. I answered this on the Web Digest, and
forgot that I hadn't done so on here. I spoke to Bluey a week ago, and they
are indeed at the Jazz Cafe for a week - tickets are already on sale. I
told him that there would be a few of us over from the U.S. and he was
flattered and excited. A few of us on this digest have already spoken about
this, and two of us plan to fly over to go to the last show on Friday, April
25th. It is highly likely that a small group of us can either sit in on
soundcheck or hang out with him afterward, so anybody who is interested in
hooking up to go to that show let's chat once it gets closer...

A while back on the original Digest, there was talk of someone burning the two non-CD releases by Wally Badarou (BACK TO SCALES TONIGHT and CHIEF INSPECTOR) onto CD. Did anything ever come of this? Also, aside from his two solo albums (ECHOES, WORDS OF A MOUNTAIN), the KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN  & COUNTRYMAN soundtracks, and the SO WHY project (credited to Wally Badarou & friends), have there been any other solo albums or release where he's the primary musician?

BTW, if anyone has the SO WHY album, could you tell me if he actually performed on the disc? On a webpage I found for the disc (http://www.icrc.org/Web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/iwpList75/644CDEA605D33696C1256B66005AD038), he's credited as "the artistic director" but not as a performing musician. I'm not really inclined to shell out money for an import title if he doesn't perform on it.

And just to be complete, does anyone have the S/T's for KISS OF... or COUNTRYMAN?

I'm proud to have started this whole 'Live Aid/Band
Aid' debate but something's got me buggered:

AG said, in the last digest: ..."I remember an
interview ... in which Mark King admitted it was
somewhat humiliating to have not been asked to
contribute to Band Aid or Live Aid in any capacity."

If this is true, who's the plonker, a couple of
digests back, who said that Level 42 WAS was asked to
participate but, as bigger bands came aboard, they
slipped down the importance rankings until finally
they fell off?

Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)
