| >Hi Just wanted to know if 'jt' is a > professional musician after yesterdays scathing > comments on the current line up? JT is not a professional musician, nor would not want to be. He did start a Berklee education and continued studying on the side, although quickly was became disillusioned with music and the 'scene'. He, while no longer practices, he attends an opera ~once a month and several orchestral performances per month. Maybe a Jazz concert per month too. Only occasionally does he thin kof picking up an instrument again. He thinks (knows) he knows what propers harmony is. Music is, very basically, a language. When I dont place a ' in my don't, I am technically not writing correctly. When someone is trying to attain a high range note and the voice flutters or cracks, sustaining said high note is not in tune, therefore, technically correct. This is just common sense and common knowlege. > show before Christmas the whole band on that stage > gave a great performance Are you a professional musician to rate this performance as "great"? >and I'd be happy with just > a little bit of that ability on anyone of those > instruments. practice some basic bar and open chords and you've got it. > After reading JT's scratching, I would certainly > have to say that I > agree a great deal as to his position about all > this. Merci, Sean. Nice to see some people have clear vision or do not merely think in 'Fanboy Logic'. Please give your resume before posting anymore though ;) j __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! | If Mark brought out a book on how to play bass his way (or tell where I can get it if he has already) and I would love to hear Mark/L42 bring out something accoustic (again, if he has, let me know) Best wishes, Ian. | oops, well, my rush to get "part 2" in didn't work, oh well. (Apolo's to AG for using a movie title) > Songs have been written however he feels the band > needs a bit more time together to tighten up. Hmmm, well that's a new one...1) a abnd that has been together for 4 years need to STILL tighten up??? 2) If so, what a better way to achieve this, nto too mention get a little feedback, than to perform at least one live? MK...always with a fantastic answer... >One day > they may just decide to throw the towel in and > you'll be left with nothing apart from your CDs and > records. 1) If a band disolves becasue of a git (or gits) on the internet, it really says alot more about them than said git(s). 2) I'll take the "nothing". >The rest of you knockers out > there give them a chance. And how many _years_ does a "chance" make? >Why make an assumption that with the > Goulds, there would never be a dud album? Runnnnnning in the Family, nuff said. No need to assume. But your point is understood. However, I am still confused as to where you read posts from people claming for the original group to draw together and produce. Most are pretty knowing that this is a 'slim to nun' situation. > But lets now wait for the response from the one's > who are still stuck living > the past and slagging the band off. I think this repeated (and repeated, and repeated) echo has now become the catch-phrase for the ignorant. An argmuent (or answer?) to reason. This seems to be a differnt version of "what we have here is failure to communicate"; what we really have here is failure to comprehend. >they must > be right cause theve > been on the digest longer than us. Tenure has little to do with thought process or intelligence. Any University/workplace/situation/etc could very well be a prime example of this. > Why don't they just goto the relive the past digest I'm waiting for the Deluxe Limited Edition signed by Herr Hanson hard cover edition. Any "true" fan would... >leave the digest to the current fans It's all yours, I have to go to Paris for a few days. Lucas 'j' Jackson __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? | Dear Fellow Fans: Why do we love Level 42 so much? It's because of their music, right? Well, after reading tons of Digests with the debate about the good and bad Level 42 songs, I've come up with a little ratings fomula of my own that I thought I'd share. We can all agree that what sets L42 apart from other, inferior bands is a combination of 10 elements. Any song having all 10 elements in place is a 10, and if one element is missing, a 9... and so forth. I set forth said elements as the following: 1. mark's vocal performance (backup or lead) 2. mike's vocal performance (backup or lead) 3. funkiness or smoothness of the bassline 4. drum performance. does it go with the song? 5. killer bridge 6. killer chords and turns 7. creativeness of Mike's keyboard runs and/or solos 8. meaningful lyrics in relation to the melody 9. heavy enough dose of jazz flavoring 10. that special je ne sais quois that makes the song a "desert island classic" What do you all think? I love the Level sound as much as any of you....but I also understand when something has become a parody of itself...or worse when it becomes a feeble attempt at squeezing the last few dollars out of "brand recognition". Salvador Dali might have been a legitimately good painter, but after the 46th coffee commercial could you respect him as much? The fact of the matter is that Level 42 was largely a Gould family enterprise, a Gould idea, and a Gould managed project. The fact of the matter is that the band was in their early twenties, hungry, new, uncynical and naturally matched to the market of the time in the 1980's. This is not so anymore. Watching Mark King up on stage, wrinkly, throwing neopotistic bones at his less successful brother and Gary Husband, grateful for any job with a complete stranger CARRYING THE NAME LEVEL 42 is what is REALLY offensive here. They are becoming like the Beach Boys who continue to tour but have no original members left. Level 42 are not Menudo....you cannot pick and choose and hope that Mark's presence will retain some Level 42 sound or spirit. This embarrasing period sullies the great history of Level 42. If King formed a NEW band with a NEW name and a NEW sound I might be interested. _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail | ||

JT, you disappoint me, I didn't expect so
much regurgitative rambling back from you!
Clearly, our opinions are very different and I
respect that. I certainly have no problem knowing that others may not have
the same views as mine, wouldn't that be boring! My gripe is that you
have gone beyond reasonable discussion and made gross overstatements
regarding peoples abilities (for which you accuse me of doing the same).
You can mask it with a veil of pseudo humour as much as you like, but it's still slagging off.
You have attempted to justify these statements with
your said "experience" but it has no credibility in my eyes. Buying every
recording does not make you en expert on how to analyse peoples abilities.
If this is legitimate, tell us WHAT it is that these guys are doing so awfully
for you to slag off in this way.
How many classically trained keyboard players are
slagging of Lyndons abilities? How many accomplished, experienced sax
players are slagging of Sean? I can't hear Krys Mach in here,
whingeing about Sean playing all the wrong notes. Is Jakko or Boon
moaning about Nathan? Did you go to the Guildhall as well to gain your
musical qualifications?
MK once said that a fan came up to him when
releasing Influences, and said "I can play all your stuff note for note"!
MK responded, "So where's your solo album then"? - Good response, take the
hint?
You should remember that MK chose these guys to be
in his band - therefore to question their abilities, is to question his ability
to audition quality musicians good enough to play that material. They
didn't just turn up like a bunch of gypsies camping in his tourbus, trying to
get work - he CHOSE them. Lyndon played with L42 before actually,
during the Albert hall gigs with Holdsworth I believe, so it's not like it was a
flippant decision to re-hire him.
Even with the intense and varied musical experience
that I do have, I do not profess to be an expert and cannot compare in skill to
someone like Lyndon or Nathan, but I know talent when I see/hear it! My
"evidence" is also recorded material, stuff that these guys have done,
pre "Mark Kings Level42", Cover 42 or whatever you guys wish to call it -
and personal experience of their playing. I can find no fault, I always
enjoy watching and listening to them.
Do enlighten me as to how technically bad these
guys really are, as frankly your "evidence" is not compelling enough in the
slightest. It still doesn't answer the question as to whether they will
write as a group or not, I think it would be interesting to hear what a combined
effort would sound like, and that to me is VERY exciting!
Regards

I was in Southampton on Saturday going to the 70's
funky musical 'oh what a night'. Opposite the theatre is a church - big
billboards outside the church show it is being converted to another 'signature
Jo Dafloes cafe bar'. Does Mark still own the business?
