Can I just say how great it is to see the digest back.
I stayed pretty much silent over the years that I
used to subscribe to the old digest but I used to look
forward to it reading it when I had five minutes at
work. I never bothered the web version because I just
didn't have enough time.

One day I checked an old email account that I no
longer used that much and discovered about 50+ emails
from the digest.

It's great to have the digest back and to see so many
familiar names still contributing. The last few weeks
have been like slipping on an old shoe.

All the best to y'all
John

2 - If you don't like Guaranteed
From: Pete Willis <peteburywillis @ hotmail.com>

Well that's fair enough who am I change your mind, just skip this post as I will bore you!!

What I would suggest for anyone else though is to maybe use that program button on your CD player because a number of the earlier tracks maybe will put you off going any further.
Now I'm not great with words or a musician with all the correct lingo but this is what I think

1. Guaranteed.
The title track is just not the right mix in my mind. The lyrics deserve much better. The sound just comes across wishy washy and can't understand how they were satisfied enough with this to release it as a single either.

2. Overtime
I like this,  a simple but effective tune with a great middle eight (i think they call it, you can tell I don't play an instrument myself!) which goes into a terrific instrumental bit.

3. Her Big Day.
A plodding song which is OK but doesn't quite excite me though I don't dislike it.

4. Seven Years
Great song, great tune and well put together. I suppose if your not into songs like 'Leaving Me Now' etc. then maybe this will pass you by too but I like it a lot

5 . Set Me Up
No, this just doesn't work for me as good enough for an album. It's one of those you do and then leave for the later editions to put on as additional tracks!

6. The Ape
Ah what a classic....mistake. This is one you do and leave for later editions and then say 'no it's the worst thing we've done, let's leave it alone forever'!
Did the lads really have so few songs that this had to go on the album.

7. My Father's Shoes
Now were back on track. A great upbeat pop song with a nice little story in the lyrics if you like that type of thing.

8. A Kinder Eye
Now this album is really happening, I love this track. The music has been brilliantly arranged on this and is a classic album track to me. No chorus or catchy hook but just a tune that builds up beautifully throughout.

9. She Can't Help Herself.
The great tunes just keep on coming now. I particularly love the false ending that then goes into that superb final part of the song.

10. If You Were Mine.
Should have been a single instead of Guaranteed. It reminds me of earlier stuff like Almost There and the drumming is manic and brilliant on this (oh how I wish I'd kept my drum kit and stuck at it!)

11. Lasso The Moon
Superb atmospheric song sung brilliantly by Mike, his voice is just made for this song.

12. With A Little Love
Not a bad song but not one of my favourites and after 5 superb tracks this doesn't just keep the pace of those for me.

I'm not trying to push Guaranteed as equal or better than the earlier albums but I do think it has some great songs on it which don't deserve to be buried in the 'this album is useless' catergory as mentioned on here many a time.

I'm not into hero's like Loz mentioned, I just judge each album as i hear it and try not to worry who were the musicians till later.

However Level 42 are more than just a good pop group or whatever was mentioned on here recently, they are up there with the best.

cheers

Pete

I am glad there is no video for "The Chinese Way". I have always thought the
song was rather dumb..at least in terms of theme. Besides, the band might
have released their BEST album, but it appears the LOOKED awful in that
period! I humbly direct your attention to the ARE YOU HEARING
VIDEO.......Mike is wearing an Afro and ZEBRA PATTERNED JEANS!!!!!! Even for
1982 was pretty silly. Zebra print jeans....purple ones at that. Let's not
forget Mark either...tight bell bottoms and looking rather uncomfortable
dancing without a bass in his hand.

The fact is that in the early days Mike Lindup looked like the kind of guy
who stands on a street, shouting for people to enter his strip club!

By the time Microkid rolled around, he lost the afro, the moustache, and the
zebra pants and the band could move into something we like to call "fashion
sense".

I believe her surname is "mcCaig" -- don't know what she's doing now,
but she did record / play live with a number of people in the 80s,
including Kaja (on "Crazy People's Right To Speak").

GvShar, her name is Annie McCaig and she is credited with backing vocals on the Live at Wembley CD sleeve notes. I agree, she complemented the voices of M & M very nicely.

Maybe other digest members know what she's up to.

Cheers,

PS Paul Bannerman...if you are reading this, did the Phil Gould transcription get published?

The Rt Hon Loz Green typed: >>I went to a concert last
year by Deacon Blue...<<

Great band. I've got a fab live video of theirs called
The Big Picture. Ricky Ross is a real talent and what
excellent songs - When Will You Make My Telephone
Ring, Raintown, Love & Regret, Chocolate Girl, Your
Constant Heart, as well as the more obvious Fergus
Sings The Blues and Real Gone Kid. Loz, you mentioned
his wife - did he marry Lorraine Macintosh (I think
that's her name) who's singing on my video? I remember
Ricky saying he keeps telling her to go and have a
solo career but she won't leave the band!

And I still can't believe they played at the Dee Why
RSL (venue on Sydney's northern beaches) in '89 and I
only found out after the event. Bastards!

Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

I use it to threaten the kids.

Why? Because nothing in life is absolute. From religious and political dogma
to musical zealotry, I’ve always eschewed the notion of conclusiveness.
People fall in and out of love, for those of you who subscribe to that
preposterous notion, so it’s certainly possible that something I’ve loathed
for 13 years I may yet adore in another 13.

Plus on a simpler level, it’s because my record collection is a black hole
into which matter can enter but never leave. No idea why, I’ve just always
been that way.
