1.  Anyone would like to share a bassline?

OK fellow Level 42 fans,

I have a question. Does anyone out there know how to play the slap bass version of "Children Say"? I've actually done a bit of a homework, let's say.... transcribing the bassline on my own, using those two things that stick out at the sides of my head. A delicate piece of work for such ominous, very intricate slapping frenzy. I got the verses sorted out only approximately, after listening and meticulously analyzing an mp3 of the slap bass mix and the extended remix from their remix collection. Now I'd like to work on the chorus, but my ears can only do so much. So if someone out there has a transcription, please let me know.

Cheers....

< I was watching VH-1's "I Love The 70s" series last nite and they were showing Lynyrd Skynyrd singing "Sweet Home Alabama". The first time I heard "Changing The Guard" I noticed the similarity in some of the chords. Then it hit me that it would be really awesome if Mark did an acoustic guitar version of "Changing The Guard" on the tour this fall. I think it's such a beautiful song, how much lovelier would it be with two acoustic guitars, Mark and a backup singer? Mmmmmmmmmm... Same thing goes for "Changes" with just Mike and a piano. Even without all the technology behind them, Level 42 still makes the best music in the world! >

Funny you should say this, because I have often thought a semi-acoustic set would be a good change of pace during part of one of the shows.  A few other song candidates would be One Man [the song] and Two Solitudes - the only songs that have prominent acoustic guitar parts featured.  What would be really cool is if Mark played an acoustic bass guitar and there were two regular acoustic guitars - that would make One Man sound fantastic.

"The guide is definitive, reality is frequently inaccurate." - Douglas Adams, TRatEotU

This is most certianly the origin of Adam's fascination with the number 42, and hence, the ultimate source of the band's name.

For those of you buying tickets for the Oxford Gig on November 19, 2003 - the venue is listed as THE OXFORD APOLLO, but on the tickets it is listed as THE NEW THEATRE OXFORD, it is the same venue, just a name change.   AVOID the top level if at all possible, very steep "instant vertigo".  Apparently they have (or just finishing) a major refurbishment of the venue, I only hope that they have refurbished the event staff there as well!

Not long now....... Hoping we have some NEW tunes to listen to this go around!   Funny how MK has not asked the fans this tour to vote - I wonder if it is just going to be the same show as last year with a few previously heard B-sides from previous tours thrown in to vary the set list.

MIKEY

PS:  I am attending the following gigs, hope to see some of you there! Sadly due to my schedule, the London Hammy gig and the Britfest will be missed this year.

CHELTENHAM TOWN HALL     November 12, 2003 (WED)
OXFORD NEW THEATRE          November 19, 2003 (WED)

5.  Schmoov + Level 42 meets _______

Has anyone here heard of a British funk/house band from Nottingham called Schmoov?
http://paperecordings.com/people/schmoov.html -- I've recently been listening to a few of their
tracks and am noting a few sonic similarities with Level 42...  although perhaps its wishful
thinking :)

Also, for David Ratcliff:

I'm also a fan of Jean Michel Jarre, Steely Dan, Vangelis, Scritti Politti,
Mike Oldfield, Chic, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw and Human League (I think
I'm showing my age here)

Ahh, some of my all-time favorites.  Of these bands that I know and listen to, my
'best of' list would be:

Jarre - Magnetic Fields
Steely Dan - Royal Scam
Vangelis - Soil Festivities and Friends of Mr. Cairo (w/Jon Anderson)
Mike Oldfield - QE2
Howard Jones - Human's Lib (classic)

I really got into alot of these bands in the mid/late 80's, all in the same life stage as
Level 42.  Definitely brings back good memories of discovering all these bands around
the same time.  Of these five listed, I've probably accumulated nearly all their material
(except prolific-gone-crazy Mike Oldfield) in the process.

But how random...  I don't think I've ever seen JMJ, Vangelis and Mike Oldfield mentioned
in the same posting on the Digest.

In 10 years of this forum, there are unfortunately precious few other bands that I *know*
other Digesters listen to (Steely Dan, Jamiroquai, JTQ, Nik Kershaw)... and perhaps sparked by the
Kraftwerk curve ball, I'm now curious to see some type of study revealing the
"% common interest" listing of every Digest subscriber's top-20 favorite musician/bands.
How cool would it be to learn that a substantial of other Level 42 fans are also into band _____?

cheers,
Eric
