The Finno-Italian section of the Digest is considering Dublin.
Should we have a "fossil reunion in there"? Mikey, not sure about cider but
Guinness and Caffreys make the journey worth the monies...

I just got back from a conference for my firm, and they hired Kool & the
Gang to entertain us. The lead singer was a guy who was no more than 25
years old, but sounded just like JT. It didn't really bother me that it
wasn't JT, because all the old hits like Jungle Boogie and Hollywood
Swingin' still had the original instrumentalists creating the groove [Kool
Bell hasn't aged in 20 years!].

A successful group that comes to mind with or without the 'lead singer' is
Incognito. He has always used a number of singers to mix it up, and even
with Maysa gone [based on conversations with Bluey I would be surprised if
she ever came back in a lead role with the band] they are great. The
instrumentation of Incognito is what makes them fantastic, and to me Maysa
was always icing on the cake.

BTW, whoever slagged Walter Becker's solo CD - I disagree! I love that CD;
Surf And/Or Die, Girlfriend - very cool songs. I actually like this CD
better than Kamakiriad because it was more raw and less sterile.

Hello ALL,

Forgive this minor plug here, but it is for a good cause.  Those who have and haven't ever seen Mark King and the new Level 42 in concert before.  I have been authorized, by my travel agency, to offer "special" travel packages to see the boys this year.   All packages include consolidated round trip air, hotels, rail passes, and tickets to see the main man himself.   I have packages for every date this year, including the UK, Denmark,  and Indonesia, and any other gigs for this calendar year.  If you would like to check out some prices e-mail me at the address above - with the subject line LEVEL 42 and I would be happy to work with you, even if you have other travel plans, I can check to make sure you are getting a 'good' deal!   I have many happy customers on this forum from years past, so come join us this year - this could be your last chance!

I hope to see some new faces out there this year....

Yes, Mark wrote the vast majority of the music for Level 42. But I VERY much feel that what Mark brought along was very much the 'raw materials' for the Level 42 machine to work with. He brings in the music, essentially finished, then it goes through the whole Levelification process. I think that basically without this Mark flounders a bit - he certainly doesn't achieve his best.

I've said all along, although I think Phil is the kingpin of the Level 42 sound, that the Phil/Mark partnership is definitely an example of where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

And who needs hits - the question is, could a reformed original line-up write superb music and quench my thirst for Level 42 - yes. But it seems to me that, we'd get the same problems over again - Phil wanting to push at the boundaries of what they can achieve musically, and Mark (justifiably) wanting recognition and success and both of them winding each other up because of that.

I don't agree with yer last statement(s),but no doubt
this IS a part of the what-will-be-history.

> this…J

Now I'm confused...Win, you are the one that 'said' I
was harping on the Lamintaed Set-List too much, which,
as far as I'm concerned, highly qualifys as
"material"...all the other stuff is, basically, an
aside.
Although I, for one, also question the way in which
the material in played.

[now off of personal reply to win]
Also, please note, especially to all you that believe
AG will send you 10 bucks if you agreee with him, that
he states "all its blemishes".
So now, all you 'agree-ers' will admit it, or not cry,
or shout "slagger", at least.

And I believe noone, aside from AG, that they would
not get wet in the pants if they originals got
together and played the same shit. You'll get all
sticky for a medicore version, but now you may not go
to see the originals guys.
Something smells of deep, deep bullshit.

Hmmm, tatoos (well, that's kinda done with,
hopefully), sweatbands, skateboards...I think they can
do it!!

Heard _One Man_ lately? ;) (yes, yes, I know, this
was MK's 'mature departure'...)

> [mk]I do think he was the catalyst for this band.

I go with that. Still don't think that's an excuse to
whore the name because this creative catalyst can't
get a sell out on the shows he wants to.

And I agree that his lyric writing is pretty lame.

>Instead, I will be listening to Mark and a

Hmmmm, well, aside from GH I wouldn't call these guys
in for any sessions...

>and some OTHER DUDE crushing his balls

oye, didn't notice that, but it does explain the
off-keyness to it, plus that kind of pain (ouch!)
could easily be provided as an excuse for the vapid
solos...
I think the photographer should capture that moment
for the next tour program (even the tour program
consists/ed of old stuff (!)...)

> there was still an active variation of the band
> "Yes" at the time!

Herr Hanson, you are correct. Chris Squire was, I
believe, "owning", "retaining" and all those other
terms we use here, the "rights" to the name opposite
of no.

>The driving force here was Jon
> Anderson

Hmmmmmmm, while I stopped following them many a moon
ago, I think Trevor Rabin had a big hand it making
them nifty for Mtv, etc.

Very nice to see 2 (or any number) of guys have some
backbone and not haggle over a name that would have
certainly sold more albums/placed more ass in the
seats...

Right then, I thought I would do something completely different and *not*
slag-off off nor defend the band since two months into the debate, I'm
just as bored with it as I was then.

Instead, I'll post some pictures :)

I've just finally gotten around to putting together a web page with the
pictures from Zak's gathering last month. There are several quicktime
clips up there which you can tell from the thumbnails with a slider bar
on them.

http://www.level42webdigest.com/~djames/photo_albums/2003_zakfest/

Remember the slow connection though and be patient!

Also, I kept holding off on posting these pictures because I hadn't
finished filtering the bad images out and putting up captions but now
that it's been almost eighteen months since the last Mark King tour at
the Jazz Cafe, it seems rather obvious that I'm not going to finish.

The Winter tour of 2001 pictures are now online at:

Enjoy!

I don't really agree with that bit.  I think maybe Mark has never had enough confidence in his own lyric-writing ability.  Personally, I like the lyrics he wrote for the Trash songs better than a lot of the stuff the Goulds have written (which isn't to say that they haven't written some good ones).

Eric Hansen wrote:

Of course, he only did the one solo album without Walter.  The second one, for all intents and purposes, is really a Steely Dan album without the name.

>Ok, please give me some of this ‘body of evidence’?

Well, the fact that when Phil Gould left they made a mediocre album followed
by a dreadful album without him, and when he re-joined they made their best
album for just under a decade. I didn't want to spell that out before for
fear of another cycle of 'the merits of SATS/G/FN'. I can wait a good few
months for that particular chestnut to come out for roasting again.

>So I’m not a super fan of mark king, when I say that I think he WAS the
defining creative spark... Mark King is listed as composer quite a bit more
than any other band member. He had his hand in more songs than any of the
other members, and by a LARGE margin I might add. He is listed as main
writer quite more than any other.

King was unquestionably the main contributor, I'm not disputing that. My
point is not what Phil Gould wrote himself, rather that he made the
contributions of the others more interesting. He certainly seems to have
brought the best out of Mark King. The collaborative process is a curious
beast.

>I my opinion I think Mark’s weak area might be in the lyric writing

You don't find 'Pamela' a work of wit and nuance?

It's a stretch. A long stretch. Maybe pre-1980 vs post-1980 with the
entirely differing coteries.

>Hypothetically, though, what would the Dan be like with only Fagan?

It's Fagen, Hansan.

>Probably like Fagan's solo stuff, which is great (AG, comment?)

It's crap.

Cursory listenings of The Nightfly give the impression of a straightforward
continuation of the Steely Dan sound, but that's a specious assessment. As
Kamakiriad went on to suggest, Fagen apparently needs a defined concept
around which to place his lyrics. As a solo artist he also employs much less
cynicism than SD, and is less character driven. And there is almost none of
the morbid humour which runs through the SD oeuvre, which is odd since in
interviews he's even drier and more evasive than Becker. Two Against Nature,
an astonishingly strong album after a 20 year hiatus, showed how much they
benefit from writing together.

You want to try being on the Haircut 100 Digest. Three of us arguing these
last 20 years about the merits of the Paint & Paint album made without Nick
Heyward.

A positive band line-up switch? Squeeze happily waved goodbye to Jools
Holland and welcomed aboard Paul Carrack, whose sublime vocal and organ work
helped create one of the half dozen greatest pop songs ever ('Tempted').

A negative band line-up switch? Squeeze reformed after the critically
acclaimed but commercially disastrous Difford & Tilbrook album with one
Jools Holland aboard, thereby condemning every piano solo, no matter what
the nature of the song, to boogie woogie hell.

You would think fame and fortune...well riding on the tail coats of
it anyhow..would make someone pretty secure. What kind of washed up,
third rate, stand in drummer for a has-been pop band reads though
fan email lists to attack his critics? He probably reads through it
to look for his name to remind himself that for a brief period in
1988 he was part of Level 42's proverbial "shark jump". No wonder they let
him write.

Apparently I hurt his feelings and he email's me to insult me...I
want the money I forked over for "Staring at the Sun" and
"Garunteed" back! With interest.

Gary, here is how it works in show business: You don't attack your
critics, and you NEVER read your poor reviews. I am no professional
critic, but I did pay for copies of your material. I have heard it,
and am not astounded by it. No wonder Phil refuses to play it! And
now that Ol' Mark King bought the rights to the brand you line up
for the scraps. I will hang on to the old cd's thanks, because that
is where the talent was. If you and the new Level 42 happen to get
a gig better than opening for Ringo and his all star band, I might
come to the show inbetween playing the slots and visiting Madame Taussauds.

To the rest of you on the digest, if you want a member of Level 42 to email
you, insult him. It seems to work.
