Have to agree with this, his comments seem to be deliberately aggressive and
argumentative. We are all of course entitled to our own opinions, just a
shame that some folks can't be a little more friendly and constructive in
the process.
If you want to talk about " Kiddie pop ", take a look at the UK charts at
the moment, not Mark King's band !

I'm a long time observer of the Digest, both in original form, internet and
now in its new and improved version.
I feel it necessary to add my opinion to the Level 42, Cover 42 postings.

A brief History....

I purchased my first Level 42 record in 1981/82 - 7" version of Starchild.
I subsequently saw them live in 1982 (I think) at the Queensway Hall in
Dunstable. (NOW AN ASDA)
I have followed the groups progression and transition in musical style
throughout the years and remain an avid fan. When I heard of MK's purchase?
of the rights to use the Level 42 name I was excited..still am! Like many
things that we grow up with
music represents a cocktail of memories from a specific snapshot in time.
Most of mine with Level 42 are good - even Staring at the sun & Guaranteed!

The issue that I have with some of the 'muso' threads recently is that imho
people are taking themselves and the music too seriously.

I had the pleasure of seeing Level 42 at the Cambridge Corn exchange this
year. Apart from the shocking acoustics, the gig was fantastic..energy,
musicianship and everything that I remember as being great about my original
experience in 1982. No ML,PG or BG? Big deal! The only thing that let the
current line up down was Lyndon's occasion faux pas on the keys. However,
was it THAT BAD.. no.

If the current line up produce new material..great. If they don't, it would
be a shame but I won't loose sleep about it. Are they profiteering on a name
from the 80's / 90's? I don't give a sh*t.

The chance for me, once a year, to watch MK live is enough. Whilst I
appreciate the contributions in the past from the Gould brothers and Mike
Lindup, the reason I got into Level 42 was MK.

I know everyone has their own opinion and they are entitled to it. That is
what makes this Digest interesting, but for heavens sake some of you need to
take a bite of the reality apple and lighten up!

Hi Guys,

Just to mention about the Joe Daflos posting from yesterday..... Joe Daflos
was bought from Mark, by a Ryde businesman who already owned a very
successful pub in the area.

He now owns Joe Daflos (I think part of the deal when he bought the place
was he kept the name as Joe Daflos). There is also a Joe Daflos in Newport
now, so maybe now a Southampton branch is opening, it might be a chain in
the southern region!!!

Hope that makes things clearer?

Jen

Top ten reasons why I am not a "hard core" fan -

1) First exposure to Level 42 was "Something About You" video on MTV USA
2) First Level 42 purchase was Running in the Family, and I loved it
3) Have never seen the band, or any of its members individually, live (As an aside, I missed the only chance I ever had to hear them in order to go out on a date with a girl who later really did me wrong.)
4) Like every album (remember finding each older one like it was a treasure; remember discovering each new one had come out-- usually months to years after the fact-- as some sort of miracle)
5) Prefer the new to the old stuff (but see number 4)
6) Like "Changes" better than Mark's solo efforts
7) Like "One Man" better than "Trash"
8) If forced to choose, would pick Mark and Mike as the core of the band, not "the other two"
9) Don't play the bass
10) Don't own "The White Funky"

Mark King is a man of great talent. He can play the bass harder and faster
than any other human on the planet. He also has a good ear for a catchy turn
of musical phrase. He can sing acceptibly too.

He was put up front of Level 42. He was the singer and the star freak show
with his bass playing. He was the one with more screen time in the vids, and
more air time in radio interviews. Thusly he becomes the main marketing tool
of the band. The one you are supposed to admire and use as a role model.
Some of you sicker, more obsessed fans fell for this. As a result, anything
Mark King does is Level 42 these days.

Mark on his own....much less impressive then with Level 42. Influences was a
little raw and disorganized. One Man required too much of a stretch to
enjoy..I really had trouble with it. Trash was better, but missing that
certain something. Why feel empty??

BECAUSE LEVEL 42 ARE THE GOULD BROS AND BADAROU!!! Just because Mark King
was the lead singer many of you feel he is the CORE of the band, it's main
spirit. THis is untrue. The band is a Gould family creation, and although
Marks contribution is massive, MARK KING SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHTS TO THE
BRAND NAME LEVEL 42!! WHY? Because he will go and do something like this
"new lineup" and sully the name. Phil and Boon should have bought the rights
to protect it from the regularly misguided Mark King. Next thing you know,
Mark King will tour in a clown suit, making balloon animals, calling it a
"Level 42" tour.

Phil Gould always knew the risks of selling out in regards to creativity.
Phil was a much better captain.

Just thought I'd say amongst asides from everything else thanks to the guy
(sorry can't remember your name) who's uploaded mp3's to forevernow.com and
while I think of it anyone else who has uploaded stuff for our pleasure. And
for that matter those of you who have sent me stuff, there is only one so he
knows who he is & I haven't forgotten I owe him... All the recent debate
(again) has brought to the surface something I kind of touched on once
before many moons ago. Another band I like, in amongst a whole myriad of
styles/musicians, is Kiss. Several years ago the original 4 memebers got
back together (OK it was financial, no one pretended otherwise) put all the
gear back on and toured. I personally couldn't beleive my luck, only having
seen them post orig & post makeup. They only played stuff from 74-79, from
when they were together first time. People moaned it wasn't like the 'old
days' (No it wasn't, it was nearly 20 years on). People moaned that they
didn't play any post original line up stuff, people moaned there was no new
album. They delivered a new album and toured again. It wasn't enough, not
'The Old Kiss'. Huh what? Someone here a while back mentioned something
along the lines of JK and his band being stale and samey now (Or is he
sticking to his roots?). Each 42 album has it's own merits, yes the earlier
ones are more Jazzy, Funky whatever. Had they got as far as SITL or TL and
not progressed, where would we be ? As somebody else has said had PG & BG
stayed or WM not been produced where would we be? Not here, probably, who
knows? A band touring every 4 years playing stadiums while us 'real' fans
complain about the hyped commercial dross they pump out for the corporation?
If I had just 1% of the talent of any of the members derided here, I'd be
happy as the proverbial pig - people keep telling me I'm good - I think they
are on drugs but hey you get my drift! Dean had a good analogy today -both
sides. I personally can't help thinking Mark does it for us as well as him.
Only one person knows the answer to that and the rest of us can only
speculate however much we think we know the person we've listened to 100,000
times on the CD. I've said before that it's good to go see it while you can,
I missed seeing Nirvana here in Reading cos I 'knew' he (Kurt) wouldn't turn
up, surely bombing out of a Seattle gig indicated he wouldn't play Reading
Festival? He did & they played a stormer, a short while later he was dead. I
decided to catch Miles on the 'next' tour after being offered a ticket. It
was the last tour he ever did. If ya wanna say you're not going cos y'all
don't wanna see SAY, HW, or LL then fine. However what 'might' you see if
you do go? If the original 4 had never been famous and still together, we'd
be moaning about Haunted House or ROTHRM being played again, Aw F.F.S not
Heathrow again, Jeezus (Sorry Loz) they're doing the effing Strategy set
AGAIN!! How the new stuff ain't like the old.......... Life's too short,
I'd love to see new stuff, even more rare stuff live, but If I have to
'endure' watching those hands doing what they do to 'lesser' tracks then
I'll go. Phil has done the odd track and a CD of samples, Boon has done a
couple of great CD's and continues to give us more mp3's. I'm not being
disrespectful in any way to Boon but I thought it ironic that people
complained about how Trash was presented (bearing in mind it was rough (ish)
demos) & Boon said something to the effect that Love Kills, broke his bank.
Looked nice though.... Mike's done some live stuff on his own and with
DaLata but no album yet....One final thing, it was also mentioned about who
was responsible for the success asides from Lady Luck & hard work and I know
I'm biased, everyone who doesn't fall about laughing when I tell em or they
see my tattoo always says 'fantastic bass player'. Not great keyboard
player, great song writing...... I am not deriding anyones talents or
songwriting ability, I just have the feeling Mark would still be known as
one of THE great bass players with or without the band, certainly one of the
best the U.K has ever had the fortune to be born on it's shores and claim as
thier own. As much as I like all of the musicians associated with it I can't
help that feeling. I'm not saying EVERYTHING is great as much as I hate to
admit it there are tracks on EVERY album I mainly skip. Not Oneman & or
Changes or Tinman. I wish I was as articulate as A.G I could've put all that
into about 6 words, but i'm not I'm down river from him and I'll stop about
there before the beer and my warped mind
combine......................................................

Notwithstanding a somewhat cavalier approach to apostrophe placement, this
was one of the finest postings I've read on this revived forum. Some of the
recent views on the new/old debate, to simplify much of the recent acrimony,
seem to have lost sight of the fact that nothing in life is black and white.
Not only has Dean figured this out, he's not afraid to stand up and admit to
being grey. Well done that man. With a bit of luck his posting might remove
some of the more personal bile which has been creeping in lately.

Yes, it's in Newport.  Several of us saw it from the bus, on our way back to Ryde from The Needles in December '02.  It looked a bit larger than the original, and seemed to be doing good business.

Next, I have a question about the Grammy Awards.  Can anyone explain why Jon Stewart didn't host as he was supposed to?  He was announced to be the hose a couple of weeks ago, and the newspaper Sunday morning said he was returning to host for a 2nd year, but he wasn't on that night.  Instead, Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and other celebs filled in and ad-libbed it.  I haven't heard anything about it on the ET-type shows, nor can I find any mention on the web.  Wazzup?

Thanks - Don Z.
