| Loz, so you think that Polydor saw the writing on the wall when they saw Guaranteed or before the album was produced when the Gould's left ?
Was it Polydor, BMG or Warner Chappell who got Mark and Mike teamed up with George Green and Drew Barfield.... and imho managed to produce some of the biggest dross in the whole L42 repertoire. It seemed like an emergency act that backfired. The telling measure of all of this is the fact that few, if any, 'Guaranteed' tracks have been played at the live performances this last couple of years. I know it's only a personal opinion based on my rather bias anti-'Guaranteed' ravings, but to me there's only one decent song on the album and thats 'My Fathers Shoes' . The only other exception would be the title track but only in the 'wheel spin warriors mix' form. Most of the others would find it difficult to justify a b-side. This argument is borne out by the fact that 'Forever Now' re-addressed the quality angle of the lyrics. One common denominator - Gould. But the damage had been done - Guaranteed was the band's albatross which eventually killed the band off. Eric W | ||

| Someone asked me if I could get Incognito arrangements and tab from Bluey for them. Well, the Incognito website forum is back up and running as of this past week - it is set up very much like our web digest. One section is actually called Tabs & Notes, and you can request anything you want there. There are people on that site who are as fanatical as some Levelheads, so I'm sure someone has transcribed anything you are looking for and will gladly share it with you. The address is www.incognito.org.uk... Not sure how creative Mark or Gary could be >beyond the original version, but it would be an interesting tour de force. Funny you should mention this since Stratus
was played at the Trigonstock gig with Phil Gould on drums and Al Slavik on
bass. They did a pretty good version with outstanding drumming by Phil, and a
great keyboard solo by Mike Lindup who also doubled the bassline on keyboards on
a lot of the song to keep Al on track. Like Mike said at the end "A special
prize to those of you who managed to keep dancing 'til the end."
I do hope that more stuff from this gig can
be made available soon. It's Phil's recording and he has said previously that he
would add some stuff to his own site when it gets on-line. That is
bongosaloon.com.
The full track list from the Trigonstock gig
is as follows:
1. Haunted House (Lee Oskar) (available at
http://www.boongould.com/boontalk6.htm)
2. Mine (Boon Gould)
3. Love Is The Answer (Mike
Lindup)
4. Stratus (Billy Cobham)
5. The Ghetto (Donny Hathaway)
6. Perfect Love (Phil Gould) with vocals by
Berenice Scott (daughter to the founder of M)
7. Something About You (Th e fab
four)
8. The Sun Goes Down (Ditto)
9. Danceable groove type jam
10. The Ghetto (space mix) (Donny Hathaway)
15-minute version with an temporary unintentional power failure induced
acoustic section in the middle which features a great harmonica solo.
If you're still wondering what I'm on about
some details surrounding the Trigonstock gig, also known as the 75%
reunion, are available at http://www.boongould.com/boontalk6.htm)
And yes, Sklar plays on the original Cobham
track, as does Tommy Bolin, later in Deep Purple and other bands.

| Leveloonies ... ... I wore my lovely new Level 42 t-shirt to work the other day - we were moving offices so the whistle & flute got the day off. A girl I work with came up to me and said, "Level 42 ... that's that pommy new romantic band from the 80s isn't it?" Normally Aussies simply struggle to name that elusive Level 42 song title on the tip of their tongue, but new romantic ... my arse. Although I do recall the lads being dressed in completely inappropriate poncy clothes a la Spandau Ballet one time (was Mark wearing a headband?) - maybe my colleague saw a pic - what was that all about and when? After a Jungle Funk gig here in Sydney once, I made Doug Wimbish promise he'd buy a copy of One Man when he told me he liked Mark's playing. Have any other readers had amusing, strange or heartwarming reactions to the mention of Level 42? And do I win a tenner? Favourite quote from the old digest? Was it AG who once remarked, in response to a female digester saying Mark was cute, that he always looked like he had mumps? I laughed my tits off when I read that. Sorry, Mark. That's it, there is no more. Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman) __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. | Hi again ... ... can I request that we cut all the disclaimers, work addresses and other bollocks from the ends of our posts? It's a pain in the arse wading through all this crap looking for the real messages. Do any digesters really care where we work or what our job titles are or that our emails are intended solely for the addressee? Throw me a frickin' bone, people. Look at your Yahoo signature, above - case in point. Unfortunately the only way to really get rid of them is for me to edit each Digest by hand, and I'm definitely not up for that. I am, however, experimenting with ways to automatically grey-out or "dim" the disclaimers (i.e., by using a grey font color.) You'll know if/when I get this worked out. Cheers, Eric ]] | ||

| In answer to the question about what songs would be interesting to hear Level 42 cover- 1) 'Blue World' by The Moody Blues. Kind of a forgotten minor hit by these guys back in the early 80's, but I think that Mark's vocals would work well here. 2) 'Deacon Blues' by Steely Dan. I've recently rediscovered them, and this track was always a personal favorite. 3) I don't know who did the original version, but there's a song called 'Jazzman' (it was on the episode of 'The Simpsons' where Bleeding Gums Murphy died) that could be a lot of fun if performed in a live setting as an encore. I know a few of you are probably rolling your eyes, but it's a fun little tune in it's own right. And hey, at least I didn't suggest 'Scatman'... my least favorites as well. Completely goes against the grain of the entire
rest of the album, and is especially horrible following 'Man', which has to
be one of my all time favorites. Musically and lyrically, it's a very
sophisticated track.
Dave Mock <dfmock @ rocketmail.com> wrote:

In addition to 'Gresham' (which would also fall under the category of
sounding the LEAST like Level 42), I'd add 'Leaving Me Now' and 'It's
Over' to my list of least favorite tracks. Hate that overly mushy,
sentimental, sad crap. And the video for 'It's Over' also get's my vote for
worst L42 video as the visual content had absolutely NOTHING to do with the
lyrics.
Favorite tracks: Man, At This Great Distance, I Sleep On My Heart, Children
Say, Sleepwalkers, A Kinder Eye, Romance, Overtime (to name but a
few).
Not sure I have a favorite album, though EARLY TAPES comes closest. I also
once recorded on tape what I referred to as the ultimate WORLD
MACHINE. I based it on the running order of the U.S. version, but after
'Physical Presence' on Side 1, I added 'I Sleep On My Heart', Dream Crazy',
the instrumental version of 'Coup D'Etat', then 'Leaving Me Now'. Side 2
ran the same for the first four tracks, but then I put in the vocal version
of 'Coup D'Etat, and the Shep Pettibone remixes of 'World Machine' and
'Something About You' after 'Lying Still'. So in that sense it's one of my
favorite L42 albums as well, but it's my version of their album.
BTW, does anyone know why two tracks from TRUE COLORS made it onto the U.S.
version of WORLD MACHINE, and why 'I Sleep...' and 'Dream Crazy' were dropped?
Always wondered about that one...

| My vote for worst/least sounds like Level42 song would be: Time Will Heal The song is ALWAYS skipped. The end gets a little better but waiting through the sap is torturous. Anyone agree? Also, I think Bunty was talking about "If You Were Mine" when he was talking about violence towards women. So which doesn't he like? Her Big Day or IYWM? Angel Girl in 204 | ||

Ok, you knew it had
to be me starting in with the pure non-Level 42 content.
:)
Due to "popular"
demand (i.e., all of 3 people have asked me), here's the
link
to download
my
"Lakeside" mix that a handful of other folks have heard:
Click on the
"lakeside" mix, which is a WMA file, about 70mb / 71
minutes. The
style is
electrolouge
and deep house. You won't hear any Level 42, but some
of
you may dig it... there is a healthy dose of retro jazzfunk and vocals,
as well as some smooth atmospheric beats. FYI this is a straight-through
mix put together purely from MP3 sources, digitally assembled and edited.

Well played Andrew. If only I proof read this crap before sending it off, you'd have less to comment on. My bad. The Chinese Way is the best track from Live at Wembley, the song (Studio version) sucks. But jeez, can they wail at the end. Anyhoo..... Level 42's style is dead....so anyone wanting to here something nostalgic or even reminiscent for that matter, only hopes for the further decline of Mark et al. I vote for something new, inspired, fresh, and non fat. A ToFu, Soy based lump of seaweed. That's what we want from the boys. Bri Get more from the Web.
