Hi
Just wanted to know if 'jt' is a professional
musician after yesterdays scathing comments on the current line up?
Also what is 'kiddie pop'? Guess it's an insult!!!!
Although aimed at the band it's also aimed at anyone who likes that song so
thanks for those comments. Speaking of kiddies i'm seeing a match with your
comments here!
Why can't people give an opinion without being so
condescending etc.
I get really hacked off when I go a watch my football team Bury play and there are a group of so called 'suporters' hurling
abuse at our own players and manager from the start. They say they are entitled
to their opinion and pay their money but imagine what effect that has on the
team trying to play to the best of their ability.
By the way, this a team challenging near the top of
the Division for promotion and having a skeleton staff of mainly youth
players and free transfers! I can't imagine what I'd be hearing if we were
having a bad season!!
I just hope none of the band bother reading this
digest at times. I'm sure they have no problem people expressing why they
don't like this song/album or that one for whatever reason but some of the stuff
on here must be really demoralising for them. Sure some of them may not be the
best musicians in the world but my football team doesn't have the best players
in the world either and I go to watch them knowing that and judging them on that
basis.
I'll say again when I went to the show before
Christmas the whole band on that stage gave a great performance and I'd be happy
with just a little bit of that ability on anyone of those instruments.
Mention of Christopher Cross caught my eye also
yesterday as I picked that album up when out in the States with my parents when
it came out. Great album and great memories of my trip whenever I play it. Also
like the follow up Another Page though not really got into anything of his since
those two.
Enjoy the music, whatever you choose to listen too!
cheers
Pete

on CC's album, and Graydon wrote 'After The Love has Gone' for Earth
Wind & Fire, then 'Standing in the Light' is the last piece of that
puzzle.

>>I don't agree with that, frankly I find all 3 sub-par musicians.
For them to get a record deal of any kind would be _far_ harder than getting
some cuts on a
>>"Level 42" release. I would imagine all 3 would be pleased as punch to be involved, so I further imagine that the creative stifling is within MK. This may be >>one thing when you're alone, but when you get together in a group, let alone for many a year, and dont out-put anything, that says alot. JT, I'm sorry but I cannot agree with this kind of
comment, which you may find amusing - but I don't. It's actually quite
offensive to me, as I don't feel it is based on anything factual. The
three players you are slagging off are very talented musicians and are more
than capable of delivering the product as well as those that have done so
before.
What we are talking about here is who will
contribute to the writing. Gary was writing for L42 during Guaranteed, so
it is possible he will do so again - and I have every confidence in him.
Lyndon has written and played for many people, and is one of the most skilled
and varied keyboard players in the business. He is also a very
accomplished drummer, and a top geezer! I can't comment on Sean apart from
what I've seen live, but find him to be technically very good, and I like what
how he is playing the stuff.
I don't think your viewpoint is valid as it is not
based on anything factual. You seem to vent an obvious dislike of new
"members" taking the old seats, as it were. Granted we would all like to
see the old line up play as L42 again, but I think you've got more chance of
Tony Blair growing breasts at the moment.
If they are prepared to write as L42 good on them,
I'll buy the records and go to the gigs. If it's crap, i'd say so - but I
would have more respect than to just slag them off. Criticism is great if
it is constructive as we can all learn from it, but saying people are
sub-standard when they are clearly NOT, is just silly.
Regards
DJ

| Dear All, After reading JT's scratching, I would certainly have to say that I agree a great deal as to his position about all this. Yes, we're here because we are all fans of L42, present tense band included, but we must all face some harsh realities that commonly go with this sort of dedication. Perhaps I'll just cast in my two-cents worth here. (Flames are approved, but only if done with tact, mind you.) :) I loved the original line-up, no question, and I don't believe they ever recovered well after RITF for obvious reasons. With the Gould Bros. gone, the music shifted into a different direction. The hard-core fans still obliged to purchase and support the group, and a few new ones were made in the process. 'Nuff said. Once again changing the tire for Guaranteed, per se, and we saw a completely new transition of the music once again. Many just decided to accept it in a way, but others were pissed because the music turned kind of "sour but acceptable because hey, it IS Level 42 though, isn't it?" [Can't say I'll ever put that one in my CD player on my trip to the moon though.] Then, many thought Forever Now was going to be the standard of the "New Level 42," and things just died from there. Band gone -- RIP. We're all pretty aware, albeit for different reasons, why L42 broke apart, and certainly is reason for why they will never "truly" return. Admittedly, we should just coin it "Mark King's - Level 42." and leave it at that. Mark's solo album had both good and bad qualities, although I preferred much of the stuff that was on Trash over the company release. Now, Mark's beating the old 42 horse again and bringing the same old music, with new performers, to rekindle the old flame of die-hard fans. Let us not forget the finances of this endeavor -- the guy still has to make a living!! Duh. I can't help but think about Level 42 in the way that "Spinal Tap" were identified in one segment of the movie. I just remember the part where they are lounging around in the hotel room -- a gig on the roster for that night, and they hear one of their old tunes on the radio. Believing it is going to be props for their gig that night, the announcer ends with "yeah...that's a great old tune by Spinal Tap among the 'where are they now?' groups....etc." Bummer. I kind of see this identified commonly with regard to Level 42. People ask "who's your favorite band?" With my common answer given, it is often me with "Who?" In attempts to gain some sort of alliance with the gods of musical criticism, I remind them of the big US hit (SAY), but usually have to admit the fact that they 'broke up' long ago. A common reaction to this is often met with an inkling of shame, and I put my tail between my legs once again. Yet, I'm a die-hard fan all the same. Now don't get me wrong. Sure, I'd love to see the band like anyone else, but I don't expect it'll ever be here in the US, and I'm just not going to hold my breath. Personally, I wouldn't even bitch about what they did or did not play, because for me it would just be the experience of seeing them again. (Saw them the first time on the RITF tour in Dallas, Texas.) However, for them to come here now is just unbelievably expensive, far more than most could fathom to think or assume. So don't count on it -- despite financial support. (Maybe I'll eat my own hat for saying that, but if so, then I'll be glad to do it in front of an audience.) Sometimes I just wish for the things that we all would like to see happen, and sure, I hope that they do just the same. However, I could just as well reside in the notion that it will "never happen," if Mark or whoever says so. At least then, I could just go on with 'life without L42," and let that be that. I could just look forward to what Mark was going to do individually, or Mike for that matter, and not worry about a rumored regathering of threads in order to make an album or tour. Stressful indeed. Take care you all!! ~Sean | ||

Can't say I ever heard anything by Christopher Cross except Arthur's Theme, which never interested me enough to go out and pursue him further. The musicians you list have played on some of the greatest albums ever made, but also on some of the most perfunctory, so the fact that they appear isn't necessarily a guarantee of imaginative composition. Speaking of session men and inconsistency, Michael Franks has been mentioned here recently. To those who don't know him, at his best his compositions are musically sublime (alas they're usually lyrically banal, but you can't have everything), with chord sequences which are as imaginative and unexpected as Steely Dan - and that's not a compliment I throw around lightly. He even has a Fagenesque 'I can't actually sing but dammit I will anyway' voice. I was reminded of his qualities seeing Natalie Cole perform a lovely version of Tell Me All About It the other night. Unfortunately, at his worst Franks belongs on The Best Lift Music In The World... Ever! | Mikey, I'd go to the States if MK and crew were to go. Love it there, I've seen mainly West Coast (Does that make me a man?) Anywhere would be cool. California though, I could dump the wife off with family & drag my cousin along to show him just what the hell I've been banging on about all this time - any good venues in Merced ??? Didn't think so!!! Sorry, Win, Lol...... ;-). Wait till after the next conscript is born though (Sept). Furthest I've been was Frankfurt Oct 16th 1988 & a silly old sausage I was for getting lost there.. Cheers! | ||
