| Eric said: <<At This Great Distance (always sounded a bit like Rush to me).>> I’ve always thought that too. Especially the end, which sounds a lot like the end of “High Water” from the Hold Your Fire album. My vote for the song that sounds least like Level 42 would be “If You Were Mine”. I think Gary Husband wrote it – it doesn’t use any of the typical bass grooves (“dum, da-da-dum, da-da-dum, da-da-dum”) or any of the harmonies I’ve come to associate with the band. -Will ======================= Will Greer Empower Solutions (404) 995-3822 www.empowersolutions.com ======================= | ||

Hi all,
Not that any of you will remember me - but I am
back. Been back for a while, actually but quite enjoying 'lurking'...it is nice
to see that the subject matter has not changed one iota since I left (when the
Web Digest took over) so I guess I can pick up where I left off, and talk about
nothing much in particular but have a bloody good laugh in the process! I have
been particularly interested in the opinions about fave Level 42 tracks. It has
always been my thought that 'The Chinese Way' is not the best track in the world
- but 'simply the best thing I ever heard' live ;o) there are too many to
mention in the 'fave' stakes but I will say that one of the worst, in my
opinion, is 'Kouyate'. Actually, I had to go to my cassettes and dig out TC and
found the tape was missing. Where did I leave that?

| More 'gold discs'!!! Buyer beware!!!!! No, I'm not bidding - and won't be bidding. You can get these done for £30, you really have to be careful. Two in a week, that's dodgy. Re Polydor split - my theory. Polydor knew, as I do, that the loss of Phil and Boon although cosmetically did not seem to affect the band, in reality, destroyed it. You ended up with everything that was cosmetically Level 42, and about 40% of what was artistically Level 42. | >Does anyone on this list play the saxophone - we could bore everyone by >discussing mouthpieces and reeds!!! I play the Bass Guitar and BASS TROMBONE - so we could discuss mouthpieces - the only problem with a Bass Trombone is that if you slap it you dent it........ and that gets expensive to repair............ Check out Dennis Rollins 'Badbone' - Great Trombone and Jazz Funk..... Guaranteed Album - sounds cool when driving late at night - She Can't Help Herself - in my opinion (as I'm entitled too...) is a great song - The Ape - well I won't talk about that one......... > Okay...if Level 42 were to cover certain songs, what > do you think they > should be? "Tommy the Cat" by Primus. MK could do some tapping and slapping, Gary would have a blast, Nathan could get discouraged cuz he can't solo as crisp as this and L.C. can take a looonnnnnnng nap (Rip van Winkle style). > "what song do you think sounds LEAST like Level 42"? > In this category, > I would definitely nominate Gresham Man, Yeah, that may be the one. I'll never forget when I managed to get the CD single to SatSun (before the album came out), this was way before the 'information highway' got paved through my life, so I have no idea how I knew it was out (I guess I just pestered the shops) and I certainly didn't know the Goulds had left. I was very excited to see an instrumental on the CD (dont know how I knew this without listening, maybe no 'lyric' or 'words' credit was given). Upon listening I was...surprised. Just didn't seem...right. Not that it's not a 'good' tune, or whatever. But it is not the reason I buy Level42, and I was also surprised MK would want to take things in that direction. j | ||

| I vote for "Take a Look". Great song, but no L42 sound at all. Cheers, mac >I think this might actually be a brand new topic (!) Anyways, I actually >do like Gresham Man, but it brings about yet another topic, which is >"what song do you think sounds LEAST like Level 42"? | Well done Dan Nesselroth for the interesting cover suggestions. LOL I have to disagree with Bunty concerning worst songs. I think I might say that all five she has chosen are not funk, and perhaps this is why she doesn't like them. To strengthen this theory, two of her chosen best tracks have no lyrics. However, I must agree about man, the end bit should be a track on its own. I listened to that bit for hours once. However "Her Big Day" has lyrics of the standing of Ray Davies, that master of social comment. It is a triumph of observation. Didn't somebody on here intimate Mark has been married more times than the two I know about? Of course as a musician, he has played at a few too, so he's had plenty of chances to make such observations. Also there is no reference to violence to women, so what have you been taking Bunty? As for young Tracey, it is banal pop, but again there are great observations in here, so what does Bunty want from a lyric? This story would probably appeal to older digesters, as they start thinking of school friends and looking back over their lives, looking for meaning, and then joining Friends Reunited!. I have noticed that successful songs usually have only one main idea and expand of this. A banal chorus going round and round. Dance music is especially bad in this respect. Songs with too much for the punters to reflect on or a story line tend not to be so well recieved. (I'm sure you can all think of exceptions, eg Space Oddity, Bohemian Rhapsody.) When does a song become a recitative? Should the words rhyme? Will my car start? Will the hero untie the girl before the train arrives? Will my swelling go down before the weekend? Will the police find those files on my hard drive? (enough of this.... Ed) . | Angel wrote: > You should probably have said that the group, Debarge "ripped off" Level > 42 though, since "People" came out in 83 before "Rhythm..." did in 85. Whoops! An honest mistake, though, since I myself didn't hear "People" until circa 1990, so I suppose this statement is only true in my perspective. Lars wrote: > I have even managed to download the video and audio, replace the audio > in the video stream with the separate audio, sync it up reasonably good, > just so I could burn a VCD of the gig. It runs for 39 minutes, and like > the original poster said, if you're expecting Level 42 then you're in > for a big shock. I've gotta say that if it weren't for Level 42 (indirectly), then I would never have known what a VCD or SVCD was ;) Anyways, I haven't had the pleasure of hearing Gary's trio, but I did see him with Billy Cobham last year. Gary played keyboards, and its safe to say that there was absolutely, positively NO recollection of anything even remotely Level 42. Of course, that being said (and tying in another current Digest thread), I'd like to hear Level 42 (with Gary on Drums) playing Cobham's STRATUS. Not sure how creative Mark or Gary could be beyond the original version, but it would be an interesting tour de force. But lets face it, Cobham and Sklar are gods of equal if not greater stature than Husband and King [blasphemy!]. I'm not sure if Lee Sklar actually played bass on the original Cobham track...? I digress. AG doodles: >>This is a matter of opinion, and from what I've seen since December, >>every broadcast from the studios of WJAZ has been _only_ complaints. > >I wait all night for comments like these. Clever, but obviously an intentional mis-quote. But I suppose if I were looking for dolphins, Miami would be a reasonable starting point. AND FINALLY, regarding all these GOLD albums we're seeing on eBay... I think the next Digest project should be some sort of gold-plated CDR or VCD ;) Maybe even bronzed. Hec, I'd buy a gold-plated Levelfest t-shirt. Next thing you know, it'll be Joe P selling the "platinum edition" of AYGB on eBay (speaking of which, did Level 42 ever have a platinum album?) cheers, Eric | ||

The boy Hansen has even added a handy numbered index system so we can all go straight to/past the latest posting from our most anticipated/loathed enthusiast/wit/illiterate. Personally I read it all because you never know what you might learn. Anyhow, if you like the Web Digest, all power to you. How bizarre. I wonder at what point that particular piece of history was re-written. Perhaps all will be revealed on the new album 'Bird', being composed as I write. Not that Mark King can't be trusted as a reliable source or anything. >11 - Back To Normal >From: Brian Flint <wolfbard @ hotmail.com> > >Your reward is to be first in line to sign up for whatever new format is >create based on the wankers.
